Doug Smith's Fairey Firefly

Great Teaser-shots!

Alright! Lookin' better and better there Doug! .great to have the 'teaser-shots' to keep our interest up. Not that it's all that hard ..it's a great looking bird....the Firefly along with the Hawker Seafury can give the Spitfire fans a run for their money in the 'looks-as-good-as-it-flies' column..!!

Looking very good Doug. You have a labor of sincere dedication.
...I'm looking forward to it the more I see it :ernae:

Very nice work, Doug, anything Sky and EDSG gets my attention, and I have always liked the Firefly. FS Recorder is a great tool too, nice to see that pair together.

I'm starting to model the cockpit components, thanks very much for your help there fellas.

I'd be interested in knowing how you guys determine scale when creating multiple objects. I've been judging by photos but if there is a sure way I'd like to hear from the modelers.

Rats....4MM weld limitation...small switches, and buttons won't render in the sim..and there are a lot of them. So I'm looking into Lionheart's unlimited export technique which will ultimately make a better Firefly for us all. The learning continues. :wavey:

Hi Fnerg,

Unless you can get hold of some technical manuals that list dimensions I think the only option would be to just eyeball it?

The learning continues.
It doesn't ever really end... You're doing a great job :applause:

I am building a later model Firefly but there is a Mk.1 available now by AF Scrubs with some great repaints by Morton I believe in our warbirds archive. You could depict any FR 1s you'd like with a little pixel pushing and some research.

its a nice model but there are some modeling issues

One oil cooler intake is wrong
two in flight flaps are wrong
Three wing fold is wrong

does anybody know were i can get a hold of AF scrubs i would like to talk to him.

but anyways your model looks great i hope it will port over to FSX. one thing i wounder is if you are going to have it modeled that the gears have a delay. meaning that they dont both move at the same time. i was lucky this summer to work on the shearwater aviation museums FR.1 which they plan to fly later this year. an i notice on the retraction tests that they both didnt move at the same time. mind you they are completely two different aircraft externally and internally.

well now im rambling so ill stop keep the good work up and keep us updated

Matt.

Hi,

one thing i wounder is if you are going to have it modeled that the gears have a delay.
Easy to set in aircraft.cfg contact points chapter .. :)
Retract and extend gear(s) time are ajdustable there.

EG Alphasim Bobcat main gear

point.1 = 1, 1.8, -6.3, -5.4, 1800, 1, 1.1, 0, 0.55, 2.5, 0.7, 5, 7, 2, 0, 0
point.2 = 1, 1.8, 6.3, -5.4, 1800, 2, 1.1, 0, 0.55, 2.5, 0.7, 7, 5, 3, 0, 0

Point.1 stance
Retraction time = 7
Extension time = 5

Point.2 stance
Retraction time = 5
Extension time = 7

Hey guys thought it was time for an update. And to throw a couple teasers in there for ya. :jump:
Bill at Lionheart Creations and Milton have given me a lot to think about when I get to creating this panel. So while I'm going over all this info to myself, I am continuing to build up around the cockpit area based on some photos taken for me by Martin McLean from FlightOntario/ Warplane Heritage, and shots I recently took after meeting with the CEO of the Canadain Warplane Heritage Museum, who kindly allowed me to stand on the wing and snap more myself. How cool is that?

Here are some shots of the Gmax work compared to the real world reference photos. Still need to texture parts and animate, but you get the idea.

Doug thanks for the update looks good to me, are you going to model the nylon tie around the fire warn circuit breaker.

It is taking shape. Looks as though slow and sure will win the battle.

Thanks for the updates Doug!

So here are some teaser shots of the skins I've done and the models that will be in the initial release. Side note, BD-H was the original CWHM Firefly which crashed into Lake Ontario in '77. It was also the first warbird purchased by the museum. BD-G is the current aircraft at the museum.
