F-16 Pro's & Cons....

Smudge

Charter Member
Given the other thread has gone SO of topic it's silly, I thought it might be wise to summarise the pros and cons of the IRIS F-16 for those wanting good and bad points...

Now I've read through all the posts on the two F-16 threads and have summarised the relevant points in relation to the product.

These points are YOUR opinions and many may be down to personal views, however it's only fair they be aired in a consise way... :)

PROS:
1. Some users feel the bump mapping is correct for a modern day fighter.
2. Droppable ordnance and CCIP feature seems to be a hit.
3. Effective and accurate night lighting
4. IRIS Performance Manager provides customised performance increases for differing systems which helped a number of customers enjoy the product more.
5. Intensive systems modelling for a more accurate rendition of the F-16D than previously seen.
6. Lower polygon count than comparitable products provides better performance on some systems.
7. Lovely flight model with coded FCLS provides a realistic feel.
8. Clear, easy to read gauges.
9. Good soundpack.

CONS:
1. Bump mapping not as pronounced as people are used to from other aircraft.
2. Some users can't justify the cost when they already have an F-16C from Aerosoft.
3. Some don't like the hand-drawn look of the IRIS F-16D cockpit over the photoreal look seen on the Aerosoft F-16C.
4. Pilot's aren't animated apart from the head movement.
5. Missing canopy transparency bolts.
6. Use of high resolution 2D gauges caused poor FPS on some systems prior to the performance manager release. (links with PRO: point 4.)
7. Slightly expensive in US dollars due to the current exhange rates, with IRIS being an Australian based business.
8. Lower polygon count than the Aerosoft F-16C reduces the visual quality which some may look for as a priority.

I've tried my best to take your opinions and summarise them without being biased.. Needless to say, my own aren't taken into account.

A bold move, sir; though I feel as if it may only incite more fireworks.:kilroy:

Hi Smudge

No fireworks from me on this product - for me its your best yet and im proud to own it (and you know how I have moaned in the past!!)

Please keep more like this coming and I will continue to let you have my credit card nos!

:applause:

Constructive commentry allows us to better ourselves and our products. SOH not only allows that flow of information, but does so in an atmosphere where it's moderated on a fair basis, with topics which are kept open and balanced and closed only when deemed WAY off topic or not in the public interest.

My point to this post was simply to summarise other members opinions into a quick list of the various valid points, both good AND bad sides...

However, I've said before these are simply other members opinions. I'm not looking to start a flame war, and if it's seen as that, I'm sure the mods or admins will remove it as required.. :), no hard feelings, no harm done.

Hopefully this won’t descend in to a bun fight, just remember it is only a sim after all.

Personally I have no issues at all with it, well done to all at IRIS and Triple Six.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Thank you Noddy, have you made use of the Performance Manager tool? If so, how has it affected your performance. I ask because I'm considering doing the same for the F-14 Tomcat and would appreciate some more information from people running various systems.

Short answer is no, not even read the manual yet! I have only just up loaded the 'pit patch and really not had much time to see the difference etc over the original. However I did run with the original pit for a while and had no major issues with frames.

I will get more time to test over the weekend.

Out of interest by pc setting s are:

Processor - Intel QX6850 OC to 3.6ghz
RAM - DDR2 1066mhz
Dual 8800 GTX cards - running 190.62 driver

Smudge has given a just summary of the comments so far, and does so in an even tone that puts the discussion back on a more productive track.

Mr. David "Smudge,"

Thank you; this is exactly what the public needs... a way to express their views to you/your staff without anybody's feelings getting hurt or starting flaming wars. I know that it is hard to take critism from people after all the hard work you've put into a project; but, since its payware, thats the price you as a developer/distributor must pay. And, users must see that they also need to be fair to you in their critisms and not get carried away either.

I would like to add that for an item to add to your Pro list, I think your models multi-cockpit usage is definitely a plus. On the Con side, I would like to see VC textures in 2048x2048 as well. But, since people are having problems running it in 1024x1024, perhaps I'm the only one requesting it?

Also, please consider reducing your prices for updates to an existing product. If you are doing fixes, they should be free IMHO; but, it includes some major enhancement, I can understand that you would want to be compensated; but, could you keep the costs down lower for the updates (i.e. the updates should not be more expensive then the original version even from Premium to Pro series if you've purchased both). I say this because it feels like I've paid twice for two different products when I wanted the one product all along, does that make sense?

Anyway, thanks for listening and your support. :wavey:

Yep, nicely done David. I don't know that many folks would even miss the bolts for the transparency on the canopy frame, I just spent many hours removing them and then torquing them back in place so it was something I noticed right off. As for bump mapping. . . .I know that's a big draw for native FSX aircraft, but when an advanced fighter is built for speed and low radar signature you just won't find much on the skin to "bump", not even panel lines.

Hoping to have the ability to pick this one up maybe by tomorrow or Thursday and then I can enjoy the "D" model also.

Having had similar issues with your Tomcat and Eagle I would really like to see a performance manager for those two aircraft as they are excellent models but heavy on frames for me, the F16 was the same but as we all know when the patch is installed it completely chages it for the better!

I salute your honesty Smudge!!:applause::ernae: That makes we want a two seat F-16.......I appreciate it, brave move!

Well i have the Aerosoft one and soon this new beautiful Iris F-16. Both aircraft a unique model with many individual signatures of the F-16. Having both is like a owning the Two best military fighters in this FSX world. there is always Pro's and con's but we must all remember its a model of art and uniqueness that put the two apart. I'll love owning Both as both componys are strong and excellent reputation with great modeling talents and artist. :medals:Top job to Iris and Staff, you guys earned it:icon29:. This is indeed Iris's F-16 week to celebrate.

My only complaint is I can't run FSX that well and won't be able to buy and enjoy this aircraft for quite some time.

this plane flies real good on my computer compared to the AS F16... light years ahead

flies better, 'feels better' better FPS, and I actually prefer the cockpit. AS F16 does have a nicer HUD though.

extrerior its very nice, I just wish the paint job was bit better like teh AS F16 (you can actually see the panels/rivets etc)

right now, this is the F16 that I fly... I no longer fly the AS F16, but it does make it fun to do a formation flight with the AS F16 model :)

that being said, it was a big hit on my wallet... a very large one. I don't like to compare, but the VRS F18E has tons more systems modeling, but its the same price (i think less actually)

The pricing is always going to be an issue, and is limited to where the developer is located. We're in Australia, our bills are in Australian dollars and as such, we have to price our aircraft on our local currency in order to keep going.

When I started this business, the USD was about half the value of the Aussie dollar, essentially meaning that I could put out a plane at say 40 bucks AUD and the american market would only have to pay 20 USD out of their pocket... now for the same end income for me, the american market are paying close to 40 USD..

It's an unfortunate side effect to international business...exchange rates will always play a pivotal role in cost. It's not that we're increasing out costs of products, IIRC the Pro series have remained at 49.99 AUD for a couple of years now, however the fluctuating exhange rates make things more or less expensive in other currencies.. shame I can't control the world economy!

Yep, I, for one, don't really think about where the product is being developed or released from, just the price. A result of the "fixed income-itis", lol. Good point though David.

Indeed...

she flies great though. altough I haven't had alot of time messing around with it...

I do have to say the skins could have been done better though.

I was looking at the Turkish model, and it looks like it was just slapped together real quick. the 'rescue/kurtar' was not done correctly, the orange cauton ejection seat labels are poorly done, and etc etc... I don't think these things rob the performance of the plane, but just make it look better. polygon wise its exceptional.

Thats the only thing that bugged me...

and 1 nice thing would have been a loadout editor like the VRS bug....
