Vitaly Petrov was Renault’s lead runner on 1m 36.098s in seventh, ahead of Adrian Sutil’s Force India on 1m 36.125s, Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher on 1m 36.141s and Force India’s Paul di Resta on 1m 36.370s. Nick Heidfeld didn’t go off this time, but was down in 11th in the second Renault with a lap of 1m 36.404s, then came the evenly matched Saubers of Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez on 1m 36.582s and 1m 36.596s. Sebastien Buemi was again Toro Rosso’s leader in 14th with 1m 36.717s, with Jaime Alguersuari 16th on 1m 36.953s. Between them, Mark Webber was stranded on 1m 36.896s after technical issues prevented him doing the final runs.

Maybe Webber should have used the soft tire in his last run in stead of the harder ones..

Thanks for starting the thread Wing_Z! Left home this morning when qualifying was still in progress and only just got home.
 
It's great watching the weekend in real time, happening more and more as Bernie takes the circus East...
There's an iPhone app which pushes Live Timing so you're often ahead of the commentary!

Q2 was worth seeing!
Petrov lost hydraulics and died on the track with a couple of minutes to go.
They red-flogged the session, which meant that just about everyone did not get their hot lap in.
The restart looked like a kart race, they lined up nose to tail in the pitlane, and had a dragrace to get some clear air, with 2m and 2 seconds to post a lap!
Webber had KERS issues, was on hard tyres as Ferry points out, and just generally needed a little more time than that to get it together.
18th on the grid, well we'll see some rapid passing.
 
At almost 2s a lap, that could make a big difference.
I went looking for the rules...
I knew this:
If a driver fails to use both specifications of dry-weather tyres during a (dry) race, they will be excluded from the results.
but I didn't know this:
If a (dry) race is suspended and can’t be restarted, and a driver has failed to use both specifications, 30 seconds will be added to the driver’s race time.

Who ends up where in final placings is getting a little complicated...

OK Lewis rightly delighted with the win, but Mark said it:
Really you shouldn't even bother to qualify, save your tyres for the race.
18th on the grid, to a podium finish!
Unbelievable...an exciting race.
 
Despite the gimmicks (KERS, the dumb wing flap etc) it actually ended up being a pretty entertaining race.
Probably Webber's best drive.
Coulthard made a really good point, if the FIA had retained the movable front wing it would at least allow drivers to balance the car.
Good drives by Button, Rosberg, Petrov and Paul di Resta.

There's some new rule about where and when on the track the driver is allowed to activate the rear wing flap...:isadizzy: Excellent drive Webber, now about those starts.
 
The FIA decides where the wing CAN be activated - it becomes available when a car is within 1s of the one in front, and only becomes "live" over a predefined portion of the track.
All done electronically.
AS to Button - sorry, he got his dunce cap out on the race track, being passed first by his team mate then by Webber.
And if he didn't get it there, he 100% got it for attempting to get fresh tyres from the Red Bull pitbox!!
I sometimes think he's on strong recreational drugs.
 
So far the movable rear wing seems an actual good idea; there's more overtaking and it's easy to see when it's being used, unlike KERS or that movable front wing from last year.
Qualifying may lose some of the excitment though with Webber starting 18th but finishing third, only seven seconds behind the winner. Perhaps in Turkey we'll see the entire top ten do just one lap on hard tires in Q3 to save the softs for the race..

Great race today, well deserved win by Lewis, great race by Webber and plenty of overtaking on the track.
 
I don't think Webber's comment that qualifying was becoming irelevent with the new types of tyre.
All you need is a little weather and you still need to try and qualify up the front somewhere.
