First generation jets

... if we're talking 2nd gen stuff, then I have to give a big shout for Dave Garwood's Hunters, a beautiful rendition of one of my favourite aircraft of all time. :applause:

:salute: Now there I'd second a very BIG YES!!!

And it certainly deserves its own massive thread!

Some interesting stuff here too.

Our favourite Japanese modeller covered a few of those; I didn't mention it earlier, but he also did a Me 262, the proposed swept wing night fighter.

Nigel, ref. the Vampire, I'll give it a look over, another challenge for my FDE training. I've nearly got the Gloster E28/39 sorted, apart from an irritating tendency to pull to the right during the take off run - it'll be something stupidly obvious, but not when you are as new to this game as I am; once she is up in the air though, she flies very nicely, about right for an underpowered early jet.

There are two packages for FS2004 for the Ta-138 over on Simviation.com. Get them both. One is the original Luft '46 Ta-138 package and the second is an expansion package with a second model and a load of skins. I downloaded and installed both packages....the plane looks good, the VC is decent and would benefit from some improved texture work. The skins are far too reflective...that can be fixed easily enough. The ground handling is not great....the bird was almost impossible to hold in a straight line...I will see if I can improve that. Flight dynamics are unknown at this point as my first take off was actually the result of the plane flipping over and bouncing into the air on take off.

Also on Simviation.com is the Junkers Ju EF-131 "Schnellbomber" by László Becz for CFS2 and an updated model for it. I am downloading now...haven't checked the bird out yet. Okay...took a look at the main package...no VC, so that's a killer in my book.

IJA First Gen Jet: The Kikka (Orange Blossom)

It must have had a lot of German technology in the design or perhaps it's a case of "form follows function." Good thing for our B-29 crews it never went operational.

http://homepage3.nifty.com/ryukichi/

The author updated it with GMAX last year.

She flys great in FS 9 and for you CFS 2 die hards, there is a model for that sim too.

I remember that in my FS9 days, I used to fly a Me262 with a virtual cockpit and a cool flight model. The gauges resolution was not so good but it could be made better somehow. I cannot remember the author's name, though...

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that model.

Re. the design; as far as I know there was no direct German input, the Japanese military attache had seen the Me 262 & his reports inspired the Imperial Japanese Navy to ask for a similar area; the design was totally indigineous, as were the engines (the story goes that the engine designer had some photographs, and a cutaway diagram, of the BMW 003 and managed to develop the engine from that info - impressive, if it is true).

The problem with the Gloster appears to be with the scenery addon I was using, rather than the jet's FDE. A couple more tweaks to make, and I shall be posting it; I have a few things to upload, I hope some of them meet with approval.

If anybody is interested (and as it doesn't have a VC, many won't be) the revised FDE has been uploaded to the library.

Thanks again eveyone for all of the great tips and links for these aircraft. I'm sure they will keep me occupied for a while.

The reason I included the AH F9F is that it's still a straight wing jet and was the US Navy's first carrier capable jet.

IIRC, Ito did a nice FH-1 Phantom; there was a thread here (pre-crash) all about it:

FS2002/FS2004 McDonnell FH-1 Phantom. This was the first all-jet airplane ordered into production by the Navy. A new form to bury the J30 engine under the root of both wings that was on earth manufactured with the body was adopted. And a straight line main wing and the horizontal tail with a strong dihedral angle were combined with a thin body. Though the maximum speed achieved was 770 km/h, because rising performance and the practicality, etc. are low, only 60 planes were manufactured and it ended. The first all-jet squadron aboard a carrier was operational with FH-1 Phantoms on the USS Saipan. By Kazunori Ito.

Also, this might be pushing it for 'first generation jets'; this one's more of a 'generation zero' jet; after all one of these made the first jet-only landing on a carrier back in the day:
Edit: The Ito Fireball has a VC, Scrub's doesn't but has what I feel is a more realistic FDE. I am thinking of maybe grafting A F Scrub's airfile/cfg on Ito's model and using Rook's textures. We'll see what happens :)

FS2002/FS2004 Ryan FR1 Fireball. This is a compound power aircraft that installs
a past reciprocating engine for the cruise to supplement poor fuel cost that is
the fault of an initial jet engine and is a machine equipped with the first jet
engine in the U.S. Navy. This was not the one to exceed the recipro fighter in
the performance. Though the squadron (VF-66, VF-41, VF-1E) that flew this
machine were organized in May, 1945, there was no chance of actual combat
participation. Four kind of models (clean / with pylon / with tank / with
weapons) are included. By Kazunori Ito.

Fireball, new version. The Fireball was a mixed power twin engine radial/jet
fighter bomber. WWII was almost over by the time it entered service. Only 100
planes became operational with the US Navy. They flew on board VS-21. This
update shows aircraft B17. You get new textures, effects, special piston/jet
sounds and new flight dynamics for the Fireball. Now you can fly using piston
power only, jet power only or mixed power. By A.F. Scrub.

Fireball. Service variant of the Fireball. This model has full squadron paint
scheme and warload for CFS2. The aircraft was a mixed power twin engine
radial/jet fighter bomber but came along as jet only aircraft were finding favor
within the US military. WWII was almost over by the time it entered service. 100
planes became operational with the US Navy. They flew operationally on board
VS-21. Original model by Ian Lawrence. Modified for CFS2/FS2002/FS2004 with new

Another early jet by Mr. Ito...the Yak-23. Very odd looking bird. And let's not forget the F-86D he produced.

To go along with the Alphasim P-80, there's Piglet's T-33....a work of art for sure.

There is the Alphasim F-84 series.

The SectionF8 F-86...lovely plane, but I can't fly it...it has to be flown by the book and I'm illigitimate..no wait, I'm illiterate.

Razbam did the F2H-2 Banshee.....not sure if the FS9 package is still available though.

There's a superb Mig15 by Oldliner52....it's in our library.

Well...that pretty much wraps up all the early (40s/50s) jets that I am aware of.

OBIO
We can add the Bear Studios Mig-15 and Mig-17, me thinks.

I finally got around to getting their Mig-17 and I forgot how much fun they are. According to the manual, the Mig-17 started production in August 1951.

BTW - what is the cutoff between the 1st and 2nd generation jets? 1947 or some specific aircraft??

Tricky question. I'd say putting a a year to it would be difficult
; personally I'd say that once the aircraft got into the transonic region and started to nudge that ol' sound barrier then you are looking at the next generation; so the Mig 15 & Sabre are definitely next gen, things like the Panther, the DH Venom etc are a bit difficult to categorise. What do others think?
And thanks Stratobat, I'll get over to the Hangar and check it out. :salute:
