Fixes for the Shupe/Carroll FSX native Beech 18

Beech D18 with shcockwave lights

Sure do like the fixes made to the Beech D18
If interested, Here is the script to add shockwave lights to the B D18

[LIGHTS]
// types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing

light.1 = 3, -0.5, 23.400, 1.696, fx_shockwave_navgre , //Shockwave Green Nav Light
//light.2 = 3, -24.3, 0, 3.700, fx_navwhi , //Not Used (rear nav light built into model)
//light.3 = 4, 5.00, 0.00, 2.250, fx_vclight , //Not Used
light.4 = 10, 2.70, 0.00, 2.050, fx_vclight ,
light.5 = 10, -3.70, 0.00, 3.250, fx_vclight ,
light.6 = 1, -17.68, 0.00, 4.150, fx_shockwave_beacon_rotating_red , //Shockwave Top Beacon

light.9 = 5, 0.3, 10.250, -0.9, fx_shockwave_landing_light_low_old , //Shockwave Landing Light

Gary Jones' AT-11 sounds really do sound nice to this Beech D18 :encouragement:

Oh Yes! Just took my first spin in the FSX Twin Beech. It's like meeting an old girl friend you haven't seen in years and finding out she's gotten better with age. And the Gary Jones sounds are much better. I saw a Twin Beech doing aerobatics at an airshow a couple of years ago, and the sound is spot on.

Now to see about doing a repaint or 24

Modern VC Panel

Some of you will be like me and prefer a more modern panel rather than the classic vintage.

There's an FS9 modern VC panel which works with a few minor gauge changes.

FS2004 Beechcraft D18S Modern Panel. A modern-style VC panel for D18S. This is an optional modern-style VC panel for the Beech D18S by Milton Shupe (D18SVC4.ZIP), based on panel configurations, used with later versions of the Twin Beech. It is a VC option only (no main panel) with some additional panels, allowing to start and fly the plane in a outside view mode. By Vladimir Gonchar.

You will need to remove and replace these 5 gauges .....

//--------------------------------------------------------
[Window02]
file=Radio_Stack_bg.bmp
gauge03=D18S_bendix_king_radio.adf,
//--------------------------------------------------------
[Vcockpit01]
gauge18=D18S_RA,
gauge56=D18S_bendix_king.adf.model_a,
gauge57=D18S_bendix_king.vor2,
//--------------------------------------------------------
[Vcockpit02]
gauge31=D18S_directional-gyro,
//--------------------------------------------------------

This is the VC panel with the old gauges removed and I'm in the process of finding suitable ones to fill the holes.

Pete.

Looking forward to your paint work Willy :jump: :jump:

Pete

Thanks Pete! I'm going to redo my personal ride first to get a feel for how everything is mapped out and any potential problem areas. If Bjoern does decide to do the cargo version, that'll be ready. But first, I'm applying my own bare metal recipie layers as everything I do has at least some bare metal on it. Someone has to keep the metal polish companies in business. After I get the "Nitro Express" done, I'll be looking for more "victims". Probably some feeder lines and a few private ones. And if no one beats me to it, I'd like to do the one I saw at that airshow. Black/Red in a GeeBee-ish type scheme (Gee Bees I can do)

Like the panel mods and I'll probably do something similar on my own like I did for the FS9 version.

Yep, that's possible. I still have GMax in FS9 and FSX flavor installed along each other on the same drive.

The hardest thing about converting models is "translating" custom XML code from FS9 into FSX syntax and getting to grips with Modeldef.xml organization and a few pitfalls along the way (such as the need for four keyframes for a wheel or prop rotation animation). Other than that, it's not much more than busy work. First thing is separating exterior from VC, then there's materials. If you have Hiroshi Igami's "Select by material" script installed, assigning the new FSX material is quick and easy. Unless you want to get the specular and bump map to look "just right" in the simulator. Then, you need to make sure that ALL animations have keyframes, before using the AnimationManager to assign the proper tags. After that, it's AttachpointTool time to assign effects, mouse rectangles or visibilities.
The first conversion might take some time (>12-16 hours), but with some experience, you manage to convert both exterior and interior models in around ten hours or less. Unless you find that you screwed up some XML code somewhere and constantly need to restart GMax, then it's twelve or more.

Well, I finally got the FSXA SDK properly installed, along with gmax for FSX and its plugins. Did a test to see if the tools are working and that went well.

Now I need to familiarize myself with all these FSX tools and how to use them.

@Gray eagle, did you add bump maps or was that a Bjoern addition?

@Bjoern, great job on this one Sir; greatly appreciated.

I think I'll wait for the update that does not include the paint kit since I'm not a painter. :)

For 1 out of 24, may I suggest this livery ?

I would be very grateful - Gérard

You might want to keep the autopilot at the top on the panel though.

The bumps are Dave's work.

Ah, thanks Bjoern ... that sure brings some life to a 12 year old model (originally released in 2005).

BTW, just successfully exported my first FSX native aircraft test, of course without all the necessary changes, but it worked. So, I am now in full learning mode.

Tail wheel

When I taxi in the D18, It sometimes looks as though the tail wheel is locked at times then I manage to see it caster left or right when I turn the plane.
Kinda like the castor wheels in a well used Wal-Mart shopping cart. :biggrin-new:

Is the tail wheel always unlocked? Is there a way to go from locked to unlocked?

The tail wheel is unlocked only for maneuvering operations. It should be locked for take off of course.

The lever is on the center console and labeled.

I have changed the contactpoint 0

to this : point.0 = 1, -19.904, 0.000, -0.637, 2200, 0, 0.33, 72, 0.51, 2.0, 0.50, 3, 5, 0, 139, 175.2

for better ground handling.

Fantastic Milton! Maybe the odd FsX native aircraft in the future?

I can't make any promises, but I will save the reference material. It appears to be a fairly easy one to paint once I get the new Twin Beech paint booth set up. Getting the process like I want it will probably take a few (or more) days as I can only do FS stuff in my spare time and we're starting our busy time of the year.

Milton?? Working on the Dark Side??? Not sure what to make of it, but I'd bet money it turns out great.

Hi all
Taking the time to enjoy Bjoern's revised D-18. The only problem I have encountered is that the start sequence in Prepar3D v3.4 continues not to function properly. I have tried several different methods but so far cannot complete a manual start. Control + E works but this to me defeats the ultra reality feeling of the machine. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and perhaps found a fix or work around.
Thanks
Warren (aspen31)
