Didnt feel a thing...I am up north and the area where the earthquake is sparsely poulated..mostly bush, fjords, mountains...a big one but no major damage it appears

Didn't have any effect in Auckland.
Interesting to read some accounts of how it happened in slow motion - large displacements but damped.
Maybe the continental plates are well-lubricated in the south.
There are some stories about pubs in that part of the world, too..:d

As Naki said we didn't feel anything up here, but it was reported to be the largest quake in about 70 or 80 years to hit.

Fortunately it was in the remote mountain region in the southwest of the South Island.

We apparently got a warning about in the evening but everybody was to busy watching the State of Origin 3 football to bother about it....bugger it , it can till after the game.

Nice to know the system works.
It seems the wave was only 15cm high, as the quake was a gradual push rather than a violent explosion.
Better safe than submerged IMHO.
