• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

For all our "down under" friends ...

Didn't have any effect in Auckland.
Interesting to read some accounts of how it happened in slow motion - large displacements but damped.
Maybe the continental plates are well-lubricated in the south.
There are some stories about pubs in that part of the world, too..:d

As Naki said we didn't feel anything up here, but it was reported to be the largest quake in about 70 or 80 years to hit.

Fortunately it was in the remote mountain region in the southwest of the South Island.

If it had been in Wellington the outcome would have been different ... http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/5729882/quake-prompts-stark-warning-for-wellington/

As for the Pubs in that part ... no doubt the patrons would happily keep drinking :icon29:

Pete.

Thanks to you NZ folks for checking in. :)
We're all kinda extended family here and don't want to see any of ya getting swept away by tsunamis or coming home to collapsed houses.

We apparently got a warning about in the evening but everybody was to busy watching the State of Origin 3 football to bother about it....bugger it , it can till after the game.

Nice to know the system works.
It seems the wave was only 15cm high, as the quake was a gradual push rather than a violent explosion.
Better safe than submerged IMHO.
:applause:
