As you mentioned, a distinguishing feature of the Showa L2D is the extra "glass" aft of the DC-3's cockpit side windows. Would it be possible to add this extra glass as part of the fuselage paint in, say, a color simulating glass? Or perhaps even render it transparent?

You can actually make this with paint, if you make three windows with an effect of looking like glass. You cannot make it transparent, with this model, because alpha channels will only create an effect of reflectivity (which is not bad really, because it can also simulate the shine of glass).

I thought about making my paint like this, but I decided not to because I didn't know if people would like a "fake" glass. But, I will be more than happy to release the more accurate version with the classic Showa windows if people will like to have it. :)

There is no doubt the extra cockpit glass sets the Showa apart from what is otherwise just another DC-3.

I hope some other simmers will accept your offer of a more accurate L2D. :jump:

So my friends, what do you think?

I have added the characteristic windows. Because I cannot make them transparent, I have made them look as if they are with a shut curtain behind the glass. There will be a very slight alpha shine to help simulate glass.

It's now a little closer to a real Showa. At least, as close as it can be. There are still incorrect engines and cowlings, and the arrangement of antennas, but of course there's not much that can be done about that (at least, not for a painter).

In that link, the extra windows appear to be the same height as the C-47's side windows, and also appear to have no spacing between the C-47's side window, nor between themselves; in effect they are a continuation of the Douglas side window. Can you do that?

Would you consider a slightly lighter color for the "curtain"?

I think there were a few configurations for these windows. In the diagram I used for reference, they are as I have painted them. But still others show the configuration as you have posted, and some with windows on both sides, some only on one side, etc.

But in any case, going back to my references, Tsu-901 in particular had them as the ones in your link, so I will revise this to match. For the curtains, the picture shows it without the alpha as yet, with the alpha on they stand out more. I think it can be a bit lighter though.

As for Flyboy's question on the scenery, it's Saga Airport (RJFS), actually a civil airport, which comes with one of the Simmer's Sky payware Japanese airports package.
 
Great, LB! The only reason I suggested a lighter shade for the curtains was precisely so they would stand out more against the dark O.D. If you can accomplish that via alpha, that will be fine! :jump:

Now, second take! :icon_lol:

Bigger and more accurate windows matching the type used on Tsu-901. Also a lighter curtain which looks better on the dark green. Also some more minor fixes, de-icer on the tail was eliminated, and yellow paint on the wings as on the real plane.

However, some artistic licence was necessary. It seems there are no pictures at all of the starboard side of Tsu-901, so I do not know how its windows are set up there. So, I placed them as on most common pictures of L2D2's show, identical windows on both sides.

Opinions are welcomed! :wavey:
 
It is no trouble at all, my friends. Thank you for suggesting it, I am much happier with the paint now, and I hope that you will all enjoy it that much more as well. These details make the plane feel much more like a real "Showa".
