Frame rate and 4GB patch

I'm having some fps losses/stability issues and I wondered if the 4GB patch would solve the issue, did anyone try it? Is it like the PC/laptop is giving full RAM/top priority to CFS2 when playing, etc? I'm not familiar with this kind of things (and I don't really dare changing this kind of parameters). And having the new Zeros lagging in combat is kind of heartbreaking :banghead: https://sim-outhouse.org/sohforums/resources/4gb-patch.553/

Ludo,

The 4GB patch is an absolute must for getting the most out of CFS2, especially with the newer "birds" like those made by Andrew

That said, as the readme states, it just allows the cfs2.exe to "see" the RAM that newer hardware & OS - remember CFS2 is an OLD proggie ⏳

So there will still be a point that the cfs2 exe processing itself is the bottleneck.

Graphics hardware & effects intensity also influence how quickly cfs2 chokes.

You might just have to dial back the numbers of active aircraft in order to get a mission to be playable, or consider replacing the non-player aircraft flights with more frame rate friendly ones.

After all, the AI doesn't care about having a super-duper VC cockpit does he?

Thanks for the tips Uncle, It appeared just recently, was admiring the A6M5>20-30 fps, engine start>8 fps :dizzy: (and it happens to the other planes I have too). I will install the patch tomorrow and hopefully solve this fps thing. And yeah, I will have to think about the planes I will use in my missions, especially for the USN. Thank you again :jump:

There are no instructions within the download file, but they are within the file file library text.

1.Extract the 4GB patch program in to your main CFS2 folder.
2. Open the 4GB patch program
3. Within the program find and select the CFS2.exe file
4. Run the 4GB patch program
5. Close the 4GB patch program
6. Done

I then just deleted the program from the CFS2 file since it was done. I also did these steps for each of my separate theater installs.

According to CHATGPT:

By default, older 32-bit games like CFS2 can only use 2GB of RAM, even if your computer has much more available.

The 4GB patch (also known as a Large Address Aware patch) modifies the game’s .exe file so that:

The game can access up to 4GB of RAM
It reduces crashes caused by memory limits
It improves stability when using:
High-resolution textures
Large scenery packages
Many aircraft add-ons
Detailed effects and campaigns

It only works on 64-bit Windows systems. The patch won’t boost performance, but it prevents crashes and allows CFS2 to handle larger or more complex mod setups smoothly.

After I had installed the 4gb patch, CFS2 seems to be skipping every other frame when you are engaging the enemy close up. The game seems to be quite jumpy and makes it hard to follow the enemy aircraft. I am getting decent frame rate with my current system, I have decided to remove it. I would like to see how you guys feel about this patch in actual combat.

So far I have tried combat in two of my installs after the patch. The first was my Ost_Front. Just a quick combat of four Yak-9Ds against four B24 Guy Modified stock A6M2s over a soviet airbase. Actually more even than one would initially expect. I was dusted by a Zero after picking off three. In game performance was fine. I didn't see the frame skipping that Andrews saw. CFS2 did crash however when it tried to transition to the failure screen. I'm not willing to saw it was the path that caused it. I have to investigate that some more.

I then tried a stock US campaign mission in my Super Stock install. With it being super stock, it uses B24 Guy aircraft mods, Allen's various CFS2 based aircraft mods, and Talon's Zeros. The mission went off without a hitch. No problems at all.
