Hallo friends,

I will believe that tomorrow will be a nice day there

They don't need to be dirty......

The Mustang IV "Dooleybird" flown by Flight Lieutenant Arthur "Joe" Doley of 19 Squadron. Most probably the most famous P51 in RAF service. Funny as the aircraft only became famous when it was released as a 1:72 scale plastic model kit by Matchbox.

The Mustang was the only RAF single-engine fighter with the range to escort Mosquitoes and Beaufighters from Scotland to Norway on anti-shipping strikes. During the Winter/Spring of 1945, Flight Lieutenant Doley's log books record 12 such sorties over the North Sea, each lasting up to five and a quarter hours.

He quite regularly flew the QV-V KM272 between May 1945 and January 1946.

The model is the Shockwave/WOP/A2A Mustang from the WWII fighters package. I have no idea whether this repaint has already been done and please note that most of what you see is John "Bomber_12th" Terrell's excellent paintkit.

Cheers,
Huub

Ah Matchbox kits, I made quite a few of those when I was a lad - happy days. I never made this actual kit but I sure remember seeing it on the shelves. The box-top art was almost as good Airfix's

I will keep an eye out for the posting of this repaint for sure.

Regards,

Taff

I really liked the Matchbox kits. They fitted very well and although the panel lines were perhaps a bit overdone, they looked really nice. Matchbox also offered some very nice models which were a bit less mainstream, like the beautiful Dornier Do18 kit.

In those day I did read Airfix magazine, which always had very bad reviews for the Matchbox kits. The heavy panel lines were referred to as "trenches" :biggrin-new:. Strange enough they were milder milder in their opinion about model which weren't in the Airfix catalogue......

The only positive review I can remember was about the Flower class Corvette, which was really a spectacular kit for those days.

Cheers,
Huub

Thought I would go for a drive and check out the base, this morning.

Ah, Piglet's ol' Chevy Truck. I drove around in that thing here at Ingraham Air Field for years. Ended up getting a new H1 Humvee and a Stalwart truck to add to the service vehicle fleet. :biggrin-new:

Why is a British SAS truck inspecting a German airfield? I can understand when that they shoot a German airfield, but this is a bit too peaceful for me.

It's amazing what you could find in the desert. I rebadged it and use it for my driving around luftwaffe fields. I also painted one up for the RAF Regt.

"Beutefahrzeug" (captured vehicle). Not too uncommon, given the chronic shortage of equipment across all theatres.

Case in point:
