This livery has been done before. I'm sure I once had it and although I'm not 100% sure, but I thought it was done by Mike "MikeW" William. However I can't find it anywhere anymore. So I decided to do my own version.
It is the stag flown by Ltn. Carl Degelow, a 30 victory ace (30 confirmed + 4 not confirmed). The model is not fully correct, as the black Fokker D.VII was an early version one built by Fokker, and the model by Stuart Green shows the late version build by Fokker. Degelow later flew a bare "lozenge" D.VII , most probably an F version, with the more powerful BMW engine. But also with the stag painted on the fuselage.
A part of the cowling was removed. I always thought this was for additional cooling for the engine, but after re-reading several Windsocks again, I learned that this was done to avoid exploding phosphoric ammunition.
Carl Degelow survived two world wars and died from natural causes in 1970, 79 years old. He was the last German pilot to recieve the "Pour la Merite" (Blue Max). During the first days of the Nazi regime, he was jailed for several days for failure to give the Nazi salute on parade......
Pictures are on Imgur again, I hope that they are visible for everyone.......
Cheers,
Huub
