FSX native Fokker D XXI RELEASED

and perhaps a Danish version?

There are actually more pictures and drawings available from the cockpit from a Danish D-XXI. And the D-XXI in the Dutch Military Aviation Museum has a few details from the Danish version.

But like Dutcheeseblend already said, its perhaps better to finish the Dutch version first before making plans for the next model. Personally I would prefer an early version Dutch version without aiming device and radio mast first :untroubled: (Aren't we all a bit greedy :biggrin-new:)

There were quite some differences between the Finnish (Mercury powered) D-XXI and the Dutch one. One of the most visual differences are the legs of the undercarriage. The Dutch D-XXI had thin legs to reduce drag, while the Finnish had a much heavier undercarriage to enable them to use skies.

Thanks for the info Huub. Me personally the little? differencies between Duch and Finnish models won't bother. At last there will be a Fokker D-XXI, and that's the main thing. Maybe later on the Finnish Mercury or Twin Wasp model too?

Actually I visited the Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo a couple of years ago and took some pictures. Unfortunatelly not from all cockpits (including Fokker). For that one needs a permission I think. Now next time I go there I'll ask it of course (and for other airplains too). When I visited the museum there was some other interestings aircrafts too like Brewster BW-372. It was found on one lake's bottom in Russia a little more than ten years ago and I think it is the only one Brewster remaining model F2A 239? I am recalling that the Netherlands used those too - thought not the same model.

Creating a Wasp will be a far more extensive job as one might imagine ;)

Below is one of my nicest shots, showing the bump maps to good effect. The model is equipped with bump and spec maps.

 
not that it matters really, but finish the current one, THEN do the variants. :)

One thing i've just noticed which is bugging me, why did they put the hole in the rudder?? was it so it could be locked in place or was is a towing point??

The rudder has (as well as other parts of the D.21) a story. I can't tell it fully here, then I should have to dive again in some books :p
In fact, technically this rudder has a shielded horn tab, which is for balance, counterweight etc. The prototype rudder was smaller than this one, but during testflights, some stability issues were discovered so a bigger rudder was applied. They also put a piece of lead (or another scrap of metal) at the rudder, which could be deployed inflight:biggrin-new::jump: for testing. Eventually it became a definitive shielded horn just as this one.

There was a towing point though at the tail, but at the lower part (where the lower hinge of the rudder is, in that 'triangle'), but I didn't model that... :173go1:
 
It's been very interesting watching this project develop over the winter, FSDeveloper being a regular haunt. The modeller has a museum example of the D-XXI to refer to, which trumps any half-baked 3-views from a hobby site, and it shows in the quality of the details.

There were tools to export to FSX from Blender a long time ago but they were incomplete. The tools capt_x has developed from scratch have been a real breakthrough for Blender users and with the D-XXI they can see what can be done with them! :jump: I'm not going to compare with Gmax or 3ds Max either - I haven't used Blender at all.
 
From top to bottom: The Finnish D-XXI, the Danish D-XXI (the twin bladed prop was only temporarily) and the Dutch D-XXI. Notice that the Finnish one has a different propeller and is lower in its legs. The shirts around the legs are closed to prevent ice and snow to enter the undercarriage.

The finnish ones had a PW (Twin?) Wasp to boot which was more powerful, but heavier than the original engine. The Finns even had a version with a retractable landing gear.

I've stumbled upon an old fact sheet on the D.XXI yesterday. It's in german and probably does not contain any new information for you guys, but I can low-level scan (i.e. photograph) it if you want to.

There were basically two Finnish versions: the Mercury and the Twin Wasp Junior. The Mercury was a lot the same like the Dutch Mercury, but the Wasp was really different. Performed not better than the Mercury. The TWJ performed not as good as the Mercury because it was a smaller engine ('Junior'). Experiences at least revealed that it not performed as expected.
There has been a RG version, but the reason why the never got them in productio phase is, if I remember well, unclear. Probably the speed gain was not high enough. This was an issue during early development in 1934 or so already at Fokker. The D.21 wasn't aerodynamically refined enough to have profit of RG, but the Finnish did try it out yet.

There ware built some RG version first for series III and IV (changes for built up airplanes). Those didn't work well. Then later was made another try for some planes already in assembling phase (Finland made those fighters by license). That worked some how, but was "too little too late" (there wasn't enough time to make changes and correct ocurring troubles and Fokker D-XXIs began to be out of date anyway for use as fighters).

It has been quiet around here in the past weeks, I'm rather busy at school right now. Anyway, this will take only a few weeks yet. Found a bit of time tonight to make a short shoot: a departure from 'Lelystad'

Have fun!

We start at the old Schiphol at EHLE; a straightforward choice. Engine started, all systems on, start rolling.


Next we pass a nice Cub, a Neptune and a 747. Pic taken from the slider window.


There's also a F.27 Friendship: old meets 'new'. Both planes bear the Fokker signature. This happy photographer was able to find a spot on that Neptune


Taking a bit of fuel, though I'm already almost filled up. Good since I've nine of those 2.7l cilinders in front of me, all thirsty.

Hi all!

Though I don't have pictures to show to you, I put down a small status-update here.

The Ragonot electrical unit, which regulates the electrical system and the generator, is programmed. To this extent, that it shows what it should show to the pilot. I thing this is satisfactory, real electronics are not very well implemented in FSX by default. I took me a while, but finally I got there and I feel happy about it :D

I also created a system that generates some smoke from the engine as the throttle is pushed forward suddenly. An example can be seen in this RL video from 1:30: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4A0DFKomws
Still struggling with FSX effect system, but I think I'll manage it to get something working.

That's all so far! Nice progress, getting close!
