Departing "The Beloved Land of the Sun"

Sun fading fast... stars are out... Was supposed to depart much sooner but a nice gal ran out from the terminal with a plate of roast beef and mash-ed taters. Maybe I can't find the airport and have to fly back.

Route: SVMC - SVBK

TOW: 23,906 lbs (before dinner, idling on rwy)
Fuel Load: 1,400 lbs
Payload: 6,000 lbs

Although I love flying at night... mountains, darkness and landings aren't the greatest combination. But once again I find some comfort... some gentle soul broadcasting "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground" by Blind Willie Johnson (picked up on the ADF eqpt.) wish they play it another time or two before I start my descent.

Landed: SVBK
Distance: 117.9 (I just noticed [at 23:00z] on the Duenna Tracker I flew 135.4 nm... use this instead? Anyone?... Anyone?)

That was nuts! Couldn't find the airport on the initial turn to the NE, then reversed course back down the valley in a broken layer... saw a pair of roads "Y" so figure I was close according to the map... found what had to be the airport (light brown rectangular shape mess in a dark mess). 180 back and made a decent approach (distance wise) from the approach end of 04 but was too high :banghead:

Racetrack pattern back to 04 with an unintentional tight base turn (trying to avoid the black morass of trees below me) which put me almost half-way down the runway before wheels down (violating the 1/3 rule) at which point I started sweating bullets... but my final speed was quite low... flaps up, stick in the lap and stood on the brakes. Got stopped a few hundred feet before the end of the runway (phew!). Time to throw a blanket under the wing and get ready for tomorrow.

Thanks Jeff :icon29:

...yes was good to get that done. Was seriously thinking I'd have to fly all the way back or maybe just to SVVL.

Excited here too. :salute:

=========================================

Can't sleep.

With the next Airport located nearly in the middle of Mérida... city lights will be more than adequate to outline the Airport. (Why the crew at Bocono didn't like a few fires when they heard me... )

Engines sound strong, like 2 Kentucky Thoroughbred Stallions... some sort of new tech landing lights that flood the Rwy. Crew was quick to unload and refuel anyway. El Vigía is close by and will make for an easy to find alternate (NDB on the field). Time to move on.

Route: SVBK - SVMD

As expected... Runway easy to pick out in the "middle" of the city... so many buildings lighting up the surroundings. Didn't really know precisely where I was until coming over the peaks and seeing the runway in the city.

Time to ditch this night flying stuff. Even steel nerves can become brittle. :p

Woke up at 4 pm with chickens pecking around me and a couple of the wrenches singing "wake up, wake up you sleepy head." Too much excitement last nite.

Having cleared "the hills" and just as I was about to start descent...

Got the dreaded Vanilla Screen; while during my efforts to "resuscitate" the screen... that turned into a black screen and sound stopped. So I then aborted the Duenna.

Not sure how these are handled... 4 points for crash (other)?

Kind of weird the Duenna... 6min flt time / 17.5nm dist... Point "A" looks about where this problem happened.

Rob, to clarify something we forgot to put into these rules. (We have in similar events.)

If you have a computer glitch, you simply abort and explain in a posting. Then recommence the leg and completely ignore the computer-marred flight.

Thus, we treat a computer interruption just as we treat a family member's interruption. All on pilot's honor of course. This is meant to be a fun event--without the "edge" of the RTWR.

Ok Mike,

Thanks for the clarification (yes, I remember now that you mention how they were treated in the past).

Found a link where it was recommended to disable "bloom" (that was off) and "cockpit tool tips" (that was on). Not something I have experienced in flight till now. Flying it again as a test to try to repro (before I change vid drivers).

More NDB & VORs around Bogota than one can shake the proverbial stick at. Nice that Navigraph has an approach plate for SKBO... VOR/NDB for 13L.
