Just when you think you have everything running some what better...

You get a message from the Hosting company. Short story they need to move us to a new server. I have been working with them to plan a good date for all concerned. Here is what we have come up with as a schedule.

    1. November 4th 17:00 -5UTC shut off the forums and start backup proceedures. During this time there will be no access to the forums or the Resource Section.
    2. November 5th Continue with Backups and download same until complete.
    3. November 6th 7:00 turn over server to hosting company to move system to new server
    4. November 7th - 8th restore backups and upgrade forum software.

If all goes well we should be back online on November 8th.

To keep you updated Tom Clayton has offered to post updates on AVSIM forums.

    Thank you for your support.

GCA Goons

Hi everybody. The other day I found myself looking at some of my old models again and wondering what it would be like flying them with the voice-assisted GCA unit that I had built for the Blackburn Beverley, several years ago. It wasn't all that easy to get gmax going again, let alone xml coding, but eventually, after a few mishaps, I managed to resurrect and modify three 1960's Calibrator Gooneys. Let me see if I can post some screenies. If interested I'll be happy to upload the models to the library here (only FSX and P3D v3 so far).

Rolling out of the hangar on its annual inspection, every rivet, panels, radials all checks out so far with addition to GCA instruments.

Another stunning MJ aircraft! 👏👏👏

I will have to check if my C-47 P3D textures will fit her too! 😉

EDIT: Yes the PBR textures do work with a name change for the main textures and a deletion of the 'metallic' textures. You will also need to tweak the aircraft.cfg file entry too to use the correct panel folder, etc. That also means any of the old FSX C-47 paints will also fit too with the necessary aircraft.cfg file entry changes applied. (y)

It would need a P3D PBR model to be exported though. I just deleted the 'metallic' textures and renamed the 'albedo' textures to match the FSX schema then everything worked as normal.

Amazing stuff Thanks a zillion to @mjahn for the new model base and @TuFun for repaints especially the super shiny metallic livery.

Quick question please. Did all airlines use this GCA feature or is this GCA feature reserved only for air forces?? Sorry if I do not know anything about GCA feature which is totally new concept to me and I want to know more about history of GCA feature in relation to airlines and air forces.

Regards,

Aharon

Hi Aharon

Oh they all used it, civil and military, until the development and increasing refinement of ILS rendered it more or less obsolete. Even today, if I'm not mistaken, ATC and commercial pilots must know the basic How-to.

Do have a look in folder DOC, our team member "Tailspin 45", a RW pilot, has written up the history of the device.

Thanks!!! I will look for folder named DOC. Gonna go to download it and install it. Hope I will not have to ask you more technical questions. Smiling. I am praying that my native country Israel used GCA feature in DC-3/C-47 planes in EL AL and Arkia airlines as well as in Israeli air force but it is probably pipe dream as Israel was likely to use old WW2 planes.

Hi Manfred,
Many thanks for these and indeed all your wonderful aircraft creations over the years! I have to say your C-47 is one of the best addons (freeware or payware) available for FSX and over the years it has given me hundreds of hours of very enjoyable and immersive flying in FSX.

On the subject of GCA approaches, as a kid with my first airband radio, I can remember hearing the occasional aircraft being talked down by GCA controllers at Shannon Airport in Ireland (my home airport) in marginal weather. This was in the late 1960s so it seems it was still in use then even though Shannon also had an ILS at the time.

Hi Bill
Many thanks indeed for this feedback. That what I recall, too, listening to the GCA controllers. They virtually asked all aircraft, no matter what weather, if they would like to practice a talkdown, and they all agreed. I say, Shannon must have had some interesting traffic back in the day!
