Once you get the hardware required fro FSX it is quite good indeed. I was a beta tester of FSX from the beginning and they have (finally) done a good job of getting a program (accel) that will now run smoothly and well.

I believe that the new sim provides a higher degree of realisim to the flight experience. If one is interested in either helicopters or Naval Aviation the potentials are much greater.

If I was running FSX, I'd be a bit worried about future installs. From what I understand to authenticate FSX during install, you have to get MS's permission. How long will MS provide that support?

I'm treating my FS9 discs like they were gold and I can authenticate it myself with the codes that came with it if I need to make a new install.

A long time, I would imagine. Activation support is costing them almost nothing (five minutes of a telephone operator in Delhi's time). The product is still in the shops, so I do not think that we should worry too much.

I've seen over 100 at Heathrow previously, first time I'd seen this many. Your rig would not even be breathing deeply to handle this in FS9.
 
Now that I've thought about it a bit, there was something similar in the FS9 SDK. I'll have to go look.
 
I found a copy of FS2004 in the wrap at Game Stop for $9.95. Darn right I bought it! :ernae: I wanted another in case the one I have 86'ed.

To repeat something I said on the Old Hanger forum:

* FSX is still on store shelves. Unless I hear otherwise, MS will continue to sell it, even though no new releases are planned.

* If they stop making FSX today; it could be years before all the copies are sold. (I also picked up a NIB copy of FS2004 this month, and have seen FS2002 for sale still.)

* THEN; once all the copies are gone; development will still continue on; as evident here; there are still new items coming out for FS98 and CFS1!

* THEN; even when MS makes good on it's promise to make Windows 64-bit only; all 32-bit versions of FS (from FS98 on) will probably continue to work for years to come (IF the FS98 installer isn't 16-bit.)

* Even when 32-bit programs stop working on Windows XX; that may still not be the end. There is still a following for Commodore 64 programs running on an emulator on Windows PCs! So while the news last week was bad for ACES and FS11; don't expect MSFS to disappear any time soon. If, as suggested in another forum, the tendency will be to move to "dumbed down" console games; it wouldn't have a replacement any time soon, if ever. That could mean FS will be a "cult classic" for decades to come; for those who remember growing up with it.

I think the earlier versions will end up outliving FSX, because at some point that telephone operator in New Delhi will say "you want to register WHAT?" :faint:
 
Yeah, FSX, FS2004, FS2002, etc. will not be disappearing anytime soon. I'm sorry to see the ACES team go as that means no updates to FSX and any work on FS11 and/or another CFS has halted. I am hoping that we will see one good thing come out of this and that is private and commercial developers will convert more FS2004 aircraft to FSX SP2 and/or develop new aircraft for FSX SP2 now that FS11 is suspended indefinitely.
