Ground Idle too fast!

I've worked on some of these before, there are several. I haven't compared CFGs yet so I don't know if they are interchangable. I picked one I'd done some work on which adds on with the title OV-1D_TNR with the variation name U.S. Army Trainer. I remembered it gave me conniptons. I seemed to bottom out on the adjustments when any further changes caused unacceptable problems in other areas. I haven't the software or know-how to play with models or air files so all I can do is decipher the CFG with whatever limits that puts on what I can do. I use videos whenever I can to help with realism but adhockey is right, I'd like at least one long runway marked to scale.

The D-Trainer is the one I'm working with but a quick scan of all 4 versions of the OV-1 says they're all pertty much alike in the CFG perfromance catagories.

All that being said I'll put what I did here so you can see if it helps. I've got it to where it won't taxi until you apply power, approach at about 100 dirty with minimal power, and easily brake for a turnoff.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT IT TO DO! :applause: (as well as fly decently! :icon_lol:)

Thanks aeromed, looking forward to a test flight.

I like the measured and marked runway idea too. It would be good to have one such runway marked for L - T/O practices for us to practice getting it right!

Cheers
Duckie

Going to take a bit longer. She rolls badly on rudder input so let me get that under control. Should be today though. Have another joe.

It's about 90% done.

Ongoing issues:
*strangely wants to accelerate after landing if you release the brakes until you get down to 20 or below then it starts to behave.
*still nose dives a little when dropping the gear
*persistent roll issue on rudder input-the wrong roll direction but not so severe now

Use the air brakes as needed to get down to about 120 then incremental flaps should apply enough drag to not need them any more. Areas I adjusted are contact points, flight dynamics, brakes, flaps (took 2 sections out too), MOI's, CG, engine thrust/power/location, and airplane geometry.
Ok I can't add the attachment. I'll try a little later.

That's exactly why I get concerned about partial fixes and "shadetree" repairs I see all the time. Certainly, sometimes a one-line change can fix a problem, but for others there are so many related components that a small 'fix' upsets another part of the FM.
In addition, thinking that the original modeler spent months making everything work, how extensively do some of these changes get tested through the entire flight regime before they get posted as "This will fix your problem"? and is the change "correct" as opposed to "convenient"...but that's a discussion for another time and place...

All that being said I'll put what I did here so you can see if it helps. I've got it to where it won't taxi until you apply power, approach at about 100 dirty with minimal power, and easily brake for a turnoff.

Even with the quirky throttle responses I posted above, it seems to settle down fine on the ground - on approach the power issues are less pleasant but I too can get it to a 100kt approach (noting the stall speeds are a lot lower than that) , but I have done nothing to the .cfg or airfile... just refining pilot technique. However, it's odd that at least Duckie and I have this problem, but TARPS and John have no issues... which leads me to wonder if it's something in the coding deeper within the model.

Carrying on....

Rob

I didn't type all that stuff. Must have come up when I tried to attach the file.

I know what you mean Rob. These models are fantastic and I wouldn't know the first thing about making them. But when I checkout the CFG and I see lots of 1.00's or 32.66764565534 kind of numbers, me thinks either a program spat them out or no comprehensive check flight was done.So I settle in for a slug-fest and try to make them fly as good as they look. Still can't attach the file so here it is below. Note it is only from [General] and below.

Sorry

Thanks very much aeromed202. I'll give it a try tonight and report back. It'll be after 9pm EDT. Can't wait to give it a try.

Oh, and Rob, I did test your suggestions last night and I apologize for not reporting my results as I said I would. Tapping the F1 and F2 keys had no effect on the ground. If I hold the F2 key after both engines are started it will hold position. But the moment I release F2 it begins to roll at a pretty fast clip and gains speed. Tapping or even holding the F1 key has no discernable effect either on the ground or in the air.

Now, in flight I can set up a good approach with the adjusted prop pitch and throttle settings (above) and get it consistently to between 90 and 100 over the numbers. However, once I touch down it does not want to slow with brakes. I cannot get the throttles to increase while applying reverse props (I can successfully do this procedure with any of the other planes with this function that I fly, including the CSC-130 and the KBT P-3s). I even had one approach and landing last night where I crossed the numbers at 80 or so and stalled it at touchdown. When I applied brakes it sped up to 90 in a heart beat and I actually ran off the end of the runway with the parking brake locked and holding F2 constantly. It did stop about 300yds off the end when apparently the reversers finally took affect.

My test airfield is Cairns Army Airfield, Ft. Rucker, Al. R/W 18/36, 5,000Ft.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to look at "my" problem. It is very gratifying to know there are many generous folks here who don't mind spending their time to work on someone else's problems. Hat's off to ya'll!

Duckie

Fiddle sticks, it's fun! It's like the teacher says, "go ahead and ask, there's probably several who don't know but lacked your courage to ask." My little practice area is Ravalli Cty in Montana. Nice airport, helo slalom and landing pads all around, a lake or two. All I need for less than heavies.

Hi,

aeromed202 I 'm just out of a test flight with your modifications.
That's exellent .. I see improverments there :jump:
On the other hand .. it's the first time I made a ILS approach with this plane and it's seem's impossible to keep the glide slope .. the plane diving under the slope pattern about 1 mile before treshold (my speed was around 100 knots flaps full down) .. so I have to change again in manual flight ..
Maybe a trim sensitivity problem ?
It's not a ILS prob of the airport I use it dayly with many planes (SSR Mauritius)

To be honest I don't think I've flown ILS yet. Now I'm embarrassed to say it so I'm going to learn how. Are the FS tutorials good enough? I've done plenty of carrier traps flying the needles and AoA balls but I'm sure it's different.

Just tried the OV again. It helps to leave it and come bsck to get a fresh look. Like I said, this one is tough to get right. Still wants to shoot down the runway once you give it just a little taxi power, very sensitive. And reverser seems way harsh.

And is it me or is there no good correlation between throttle movement and gauge response (RPM,torque, etc) That could explain much of the difficulties I've been seeing. I've much to learn about gauges and engine CFG settings.

My latest test hops. It handles on the ground 200% better than with aeromed202's cfg adjustments. I still have to make sure brakes are set because it still ground loops on single engine start up if brakes are not set. For some reason on each engine start up the N1 speed, Torque and Prop RPM all go to 100% and then return to "idle". But duration of that event has been considerably shortened with aeromed's settings and there's only a hint of movement in the airframe due to torque affect whith the brakes set. She taxis better if you arr gentle on the throttle.

She handles a little better in the air as she's not as fast as before and she's easier to get slowed down for approach. I made my first succcessful tactical approach and full stop landing and only used 1/2 the runway.

A couple of snaps below. However, there is now a new situation to try and compensate for. The 3rd screeshot below is NOT of a bad landing, but my first take off with the new CFG! A really strange feel when you ought to be breaking ground in a slight nose up attitude after pulling the stick to rotate and the mains come off first and your looking at pavement instead of sky!

Haven't completely got that mastered with trim yet but I beielve it might be done.

Off to do more flying!

The problem really starts with the fact that MS did a really poor job modeling TurboProp engines.
Unless the FDE is really sophisticated to work around this built in limitation the result is going to be a bit less than stellar.
Compared to the just about perfect Aeroworx KA200 the MS default 350 is just horrible. But then again that one payware cost almost as much as the entire sim....airports and all :jump:

Typically I set the throttles to idle, props to feather or coarse pitch and the condition levers at Cut-Off for start up.
Once the starter has spooled up the engine to 10% or so I slowly bring the red levers forward until the engine starts (that is basically by the book for the KA200 real or simulated)

The condition levers also are set fairly low for arrival. That seems to work quite well for most airplanes with TP engines.

Duckie. I haven't done a full flap take off yet. The flaps are adjusted to give a slight nose down pitch on approach as I believe this aircraft does normally. Remember this is a work-in-progress and comments and observations from you or anyone else is valuable to me. Based on your butt-first take off I'm reviewing the flaps setting. Also there is that nose-down effect when deploying the gear. My guess is that part of that take off attitude was the gear effect.

Try this- Get in the air, go around and do your best full flaps landing with whatever trim you need to touch down the way you want. Now leave everything just like that, taxi around and take off and see if the tail comes up first. My guess is that it won't which would mean that the gear effect and too much flap pitch need a lot of aft trim to compensate. I can help with the flaps but not the gear yet.

Replace the following sections in the CFG. I think this helps with the flap pitch, ground idle power, and rudder/roll issues. The rest are collateral adjustments to those areas. I had no problem with take off tail lifting with these.

Thanks, aeromed202, will give it a try. And please don't take my last comments as a complaint. It was strictly intended to inform. I very much appreciate what you have and are doing.

That take off was with 2 notches (25 deg?) of flaps, 0 wind and gradual throttle applied. The mains begin to lighten as the IAS approached 80. Once the needle goes above 80 the mains come off. But as I said above, it's 200% better than it was and ground handling not an issue anymore. I didn't have time last night to test with different elevator trim settings.

Thanks again,
Steve

Excellent video caludius. Thanks.

Will use your trim suggestions in tests tonight. They obviously work for you and hopefully will for me too!

Cheers,
Steve
