Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat overhaul released by Allen!

Alright, I put some time in to the stock/OH F6F rudder distortion. I fixed it but as you can see I had to move the lower rear part of the rudder up to remove the distortion.

Allen,
I can live with that easier than the distortion. Good job. Will you post the model? I feel some more painting coming on and updating the VF-19 birds..

That was just basic tinkering. I still have everything to do!

I could use some good info on the side windows. Also fixed some distortion with them top side aileron.

Some stock aircraft have cutouts made for movable trim tabs. This is a bit of a pain to fix the distortion on the F6F as it has tabs on all of the controll surafaces. I have to remove them trim tabs and fix the texture mappings.

Smashing job Allen. I think the FDG Hellcat has the better shape, especially around the tailfin, but it's a PIA to put markings onto...

I think I got the main LOD for the exterior done. Doing the part linking for the breaking parts is being a pain in the :censored:. It will have to be tested in game to make sure thing get shoot off and damage texture is loaded right.

The model has what seem like a ton of small distortions. Trying to fix them all is like trying to bail water out of the Titanic using a coffee cup...

Working on adding back damage texture to the horizontal stab/elevators and vertical stabe/rudder. This logic was put in the game but never full done on the stock aircraft. Because of never being fully done you can see that I will have to edit the damage texture to remove some things and add others to the vertical stabe/rudder to fix the odd floating parts...

Here is a test version. It is not battle ready as it dosn't have any LODs but should be ready for the paint shop. If there are any flaws let me know so I can get them.

Hi Allen

Still needs some distortion work unfortunately. The rear windows are good, but I would suggest 2 little things - A) the rear window corners were rounded which you may want to add. B) move the interior a bit farther inwards which may improve the depth effect. I've attached this skin for you so you can see it on your model.

It's very cool you are tackling this - thank you.

I'm more or less guessing of fixing maping as the mapicing is placed off of the texture in gMax.

What I did was take what I thought was the best of the left and right side of the stock model and combine them one model. This means that the left and right side are 100% the same. If there is a prob on the left it will happen on the right as well.

Because of this Captain Kurt you will need to undo what you did to the left side star when you fixed the distortion for the stock/OH model.

Alright here is V2.

Fix the known distortion and made a skin of my own that is a copy of the one Captain Kurt sent me.

Captain Kurt
The rear windows shape is set. I did a bunch of small changes to fix the distortion my skin had before I cut the windows. If I had to re-do the windows shape I would have to go back to start over with the fuselage, do the changes I did for my texture distortions and do changes again to fix the texture distortions your skin has.

Making the windows have more depth can be done just fine. I don't know how far they went into the fuse but I did push them in some in V2.

It may be worth noting the more work I do the the model it give me a feeling that may be best described in a pic.

If I may stick my nose in....

...let me praise your work Allen because you caught that old FDG design flaw which always bothered me and others!

I am talking about the naked, open exhaust pipes on both cowl sides, a detail I never saw in any Hellcat picture I could find. :encouragement: :encouragement: :encouragement:

If you allow me to be also the same usual pest, could you please centre the prop disc rotation axis, so that I can release an alternative disc texture for this nice F6F project?
I did it ages ago, but I never uploaded it due to its badly lopsided animation.

Many thanks also to both UncleTgt and Captain Kurt as well, for reviving an "oldie-but-goodie"!

Thanks!
KH

just awesome

Allen & CK,

Flippin' Heck - I only glanced away for a short while, & you're off & running with a revamped OH-F6F-3!:redfire:

I'll check out V2 later on today :encouragement::triumphant:

I'm rebuilding the stock model. It will use the stock style prop disks.

Just took here for a spin & checked over the exterior. V2 gets a big old 5 stars from me!:medals:

Well done Allen. It is a beautiful job. Many, many thanks!

Captain Kurt

I still have the LODs to do. I won't be using as many as MS used. The main LOD and 4 other should work just fine. I will also have to work on each LOD to fix the distortions they have.
