And new stuff is still being made for CFS2 and new techniques are still being developed for the sim. 10 years and a million miles away from what Microsoft released to the public.....CFS2 has evolved into one highly diverse combat flight sim...possibly the most diverse combat flight sim going.

Yet the AI still suck donkey balls... If some one would plug the CFS1 AI into it I would be happy.
There have been some really dialed in AI work done....I know that I have had my tail shot off on more than one occasion by a Mig-19 that Tango Romeo dialed in...that thing is a killer! But, yes, overall...the CFS2 AI is the weak point in the sim. I got fed up with my AI saying "Can't do that". "Sorry partner, I'm on break". "Maybe next week" when I directed them to attack that I began to count them in with the enemy targets and shot them down as well.

It's still a darn good combat flight sim. 
When you compare your views during dogfights with actual WWII gun camera footage, CFS2 scores pretty high. Flashes from hits, chunks flying off the plane, vapor trails from fuel or oil, fireballs, crew bailing out (maybe). I remember one time during a Quick Combat session I shot down a Zero, he flamed and his wing came off as the pilot bailed out and he passed down my port side just before his chute opened. Didn't hit him but it was close. If I had recorded that in grainy black and white the average person would not have known it was a sim, it looked that good.

I use to put a lot of time into CFS2 but no longer have it installed . Damage models , AC, ,explosion effects , etc , have evolved a long way now but one of the biggest drawbacks for me was no one has ever figured out how to get a reasonable , somewhat appealing ground textures yet . The original always looked like someone threw a paint brush at it. For being 10 years ago , I guess that wasn't considered bad .

Wow , I can't believe how this sim(CFS2) has progressed over the last ten years . As Panther mentioned here in his thread , PAC1-4 is an excellent example and there has been numerous other scenery and AC makers that that have really kept this sim alive .
I have about 150G's I could devote to reloading CFS2 and have ample time but just havn't bitten yet . I along with others migrated to FS2004 then on to FSX .
The above thread has really sparked my interest though .

I did the same migration too BUT......
The "fun factor" was never the same. For me, the most fun was with CFS-2 and FS2002.....
Sure the newer ones look better but just didn't give me the same warm feeling inside....

CFS 2 does a pretty good job at all of them and with the built in mission builder, you can replicate everything in aviation short of guided weapons delivery.

This is why I gave up on CFS2. The only time the CFS2 player wing men are woth a darn is if they are set to Ace and very aggressive.
And let's not forget the pilotable WW2 subs that Tango Romeo produced.....what other Combat Flight Sim allows you to be a part of the German Wolf Pack and hunt Liberty ships crossing the Atlantic? None that I can think of.
And he also did some Civil War ships as well. Talk about branching out!

I got My addiction to simming from CFS2. also learned how to land the F4u-1A
on a carrier. I still load it from time to time. My late wife bought it for me so it
has sentimental value. It's good to see people still using it. CFS1 had very good
graphics for it's time. I Loved shooting down Buzz Bombs with the hurricane.

Good morning,
If I can share my enthusiasm and borrow a phrase from Peter Frampton, CFS2 is where "history comes alive." I've increasingly used CFS2, sometimes by myself, and sometimes in collaboration with others to bring little-known parts of World War II to light.
As examples, the Fleet Air Arm campaign overhaul covers more than four years of WWII, taking you all over the Atlantic, Europe, and Africa. Battles now include Mers-El-Kebir, Cape Matapan, Cape Sparivento, and the sinking of the Bismarck, just to name a few. New GSL scenery, coastlines, and land class has been created for Taranto and Bermuda.
Another example is the Tuskegee Airmen campaign, 104 missions over two-plus years taking you from the beautiful city of Casablanca all the way to Northern Italy by 1945. You participate in the landings at Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio, as well as battles over Pantelleria, Monte Cassino, and then graduate to escorting the 15th Air Force to targets such as Ploesti and Berlin.
Other examples include some European campaigns. Among my favorites are the RAF side of the Battle of Britain, which includes destroyable GSL scenery and ports all over southern England, including Southampton, Portsmouth/Gosport, and Harwich, to name a few. The British-themed Chianti Raiders and Italian-themed Corpo Aereo Italiano are an addendum to that, created by me to allow a little-known aspect of the battle to be brought to light.
The Battle for Europe campaign also follows a nearly-two year path, including raids on Berlin, Schweinfurt, Regensburg, the Normandy beaches, and can be flown from German or Allied perspectives. Operation Frantic is a cousin of this, which allows you to fly the shuttle bombing missions between Italy or England and the Ukraine, striking historical targets on the days and times the actual missions were flown, with as much accuracy as the sim will allow.
Another great aspect of CFS2 is that it is "backwards compatible," which allows CFS1 missions to be updated to CFS2. This has allowed for many CFS1 campaigns to be updated over the years, assuring that there is almost an endless supply of new materials to work with.
Not bad for a sim that's older than a lot of the cars we drive!

Did someone mention carrier ops?
Was a blast to build for. Wish we could take it further. What we built for PHP2... in one view... saw Pearl and Hickam in view... would probably total the same amount of polys as found in one detailed FSX aircraft.
Battleships had a budget of 10000 polys when we got started... toward the end we were making do with 3500 polys.
Still have my original CFS2 manual...disks long since gone after suffering with all the travel from 2003-2007.
