How are the Downloads Organised???

Reply...

Hi Hubbabubba,

Even with your directions it took me about 10 tries to get there and *I* even know what I am looking for. I wonder how folks who don't know what is here are supposed to find anything?

Thanks.
- Ivan.

Ivan,

In a perfect world, I'd like to move EVERYTHING to the new library and have just one. However, the logistics of that are almost impossible to achieve, especially being a teacher and a father of four small children in addition to being the librarian here. I know it's not the best system...but I'll keep working on it to make it as streamlined as it can be.

Now...if we can just get rid of script errors...:banghead:

i will probably get my butt in a sling,
but here goes anyway;
i agree with you 110%.
i can not understand why it is such a chore
to find anything in this place.
for me, the search process
is all but non-existent,
unless i know the exact name
of the file or the author,
or better yet, slog through every entry
until i find what i'm looking for.
honestly, i have all but given up.
whenever i want anything,
i usually mosey over to flightsim
and then move down my list of sites.

i am a firm believer in the KISS principle,
which doesn't seem to apply here.
maybe things have changed
since i last looked, but like i said,
i've given up

Smilo,

While I may disagree with you regarding the organizational aspects, your comments are quite understandable, and I would never go ballistic just for you expressing an honest opinion.

I try to check all the forums as much as possible...but apparently I'm lacking in the CFS1 forum. I will try to increase my diligence in that regard.

Believe it or not, Ivan, but the directions I gave are quite recent. Before your thread appeared, this path would have sent you to CFS1... archives!

This is why I was, still is in fact, under the impression that someone, somewhere, in SOH staff read when you write.

smilo, not being very acronym-minded myself, what does "KISS principle" means?

I would guess "Keep It Simple", but I'm missing an S.

Hubbabubba,

Yes...I do try to respond..but occasionally I get tied down with life. I did see your post, but admittedly didn't scorch the earth finding a solution, but did make a note to respond. I apologize, and can understand that you feel slighted. Let's check with Canelo and see what we can do for you.

Ivan,
have you lost your old stuff?
i may have copies stashed away.
what do you need?

...and if worse comes to worse,
we could always go to the pirates
and steal them back.
arrrgh

sorry Dave, but, i gotta say,
you may not complain,
but you will wait
and then, wait some more.

then again, let's see how it is
after you've been waiting
for, oh say, a few years.
no offense, but, 9 months
is a drop in the bucket.

just to clarify,
i only, finally, said something
because i was encouraged to.

Smilo and others,

If this happens again, don't stay silent or gripe in a thread...grab the bull by the horns and send me a PM.

Hi Smilo,

No big deal about complaining. We all do that about everything. This is a small community and if something annoys us, why not let folks know? That is why I started this thread to begin with.

In truth, since I stopped flying CFS1 several years ago I don't visit the form regularly anymore. This was a bad oversight....:engel016:

it is completely understandable
and i, for one, appreciate
the response and the effort.

Jagflieger likes to refer
to the CFS2 forum as the basement.
i have always contended
that if that's the case,
the CFS forum must be the dungeon,
or maybe, a subterranean cave.

while it's true, our numbers are low,
i feel that i am safe in saying
we are passionate about our sim.
what other group refers
to themselves as diehards?

Hi Rami,

I know the feeling about being overcommitted. I hope you consider Family as the highest priority as I do. I am not really trying to get on anyone's case here. It was an honest question that started this thread. The particular aeroplane I was discussing was uploaded by me several months ago. I was just wondering how others who DON'T know about it can find it when *I* know about it and STILL can't find it.

Smilo is right, some of us are still dedicated and even still build stuff for it. Just trying to get where people can see us if they are looking. I will try to replace some of the missing planes at some point and perhaps even upload stuff I have been working on for a few years.

Thanks.
- Ivan.

Slighted? Me? Well, Rami, it will take more than that to bruise my ego. I must say though, that seeing Ivan's complaints so swiftly addressed was a humbling experience after all my vain attempts.

Now that I know which door to knock at, it should simplify things.

Hey Folks,

Womble55 uploaded an Avro Manchester and Short 184 on the 18th. Has anyone else here found it besides me?

- Ivan.

that's news to me,
but i don't look there very much.
i would have thought he might
have posted here, too.
just to let us know.

Hi Smilo,

I think you get my point. WE would get notice that there is a new CFS Plane in the download section. After all 5 of us download a copy, folks that are not following this forum would never know about it and might not find it even if they were looking for it.

- Ivan.

just for the halibut,
i went over to the warbirds library forum,
which, by the way, is a place i rarely frequent.
sure enough, there were two posts by womble55.
apparently, when an upload is made,
a post is made in that forum,
along with a link to the project.

unfortunately, unless one checks there regularly,
one is s.o.l. about new uploads.
that is, unless someone else sees it
and passes along the information.
thank you for that.

i guess it's up to the author
to post in the appropriate forum,
ie, CFS1, 2 or 3, FS9, etc.

Hi Smilo,

That almost works for us at Sim-Outhouse, but what about making things available to the general CFS population? Folks who are not members here and are just searching would never find this stuff.

- Ivan.

your point is well taken;

i just went to the Warbirds menu
at the top of the page
clicked on Warbirds,
got the Warbirds Library page,
clicked on Combat Flight Simulator 1 Add-Ons
and got the SOH Archive
which contained 125 CFS files
with CFS2 files mixed in for good measure.
there is also a link
Search CFC Archive 2 for Combat Flight Simulator 1 - click here
which has 145, mostly CFS1 files.
there is some real good old stuff
in the SOH Archives and the CFC Archive 2
check it out

next, i went back to the Warbirds menu
selected Library Index,
clicked on CFS Add-Ons Library,
this page has links to the
CFS 1 Aircraft Add-Ons [6 entries]
this is where the latest CFS aircraft are located
CFS 1 Skins Add-Ons [0 entries]
CFS 1 Other Add-Ons [6 entries]

okay, so, for a newbie, it maybe a tough search.
to be honest, i don't know why
the Library menu is called Warbird's.
it seems to me that this just adds
another small barrier to the search process.
but what do i know?

Ivan,
your post seems to imply that
i have some control or say
in the way things are around here.
sorry to disappoint, but i do not.
i am merely the moderator of the CFS1 forum,
nothing more, nothing less.
well, i guess i am also a SOH member,
but that's pretty much it.

i firmly believe that Rami is making
an honest effort to upgrade the Library,
but, do i really need to remind you
that CFS1 is the low rung on the ladder?
okay, okay, yes, there's FS5 and FS98,
but, i'm sure, you get my drift.
as far as most in the FS community
are concerned, CFS is on it's death bed.
small wonder, CFS1 add-ons are a low priority,
not only here, but on many sites.
of course, there are a few exceptions,
but they are becoming few and far between.

i've been flying the Manchester for a little bit now.
i like the looks of this model, well done.
although, i would prefer transparent glass.

my apologies womble,
far be it for me to criticize your hard work.
sometimes, i just can't help myself.

Well, The Free Flight Site adds CFS-1 stuff almost daily and it's pretty easy to locate whatever you may be looking for.

Added a lot of missions for many of the featured aircraft over the last few days.

i can't help but notice that several gauges are missing.
in the panel folder, there is a text document
that refers to the panel's author, Phil Perrott
and that it was for a FS98 Avro Lancaster.
i went over to FlightSim Advanced File Search,
http://www.flightsim.com/file.php?cm=SEARCH
selected FS:FS98 Panels in the Search only file section window
then typed Phil Perrott in the all these words window
hit the Start Search button
and found all of Phil Perrott's FS98 panels....lots of them.
scrolled through until i found lancpnl.zip
the gauges are in there.

oh yeah, you need to be a member to download
http://www.flightsim.com/file.php?cm=INDEXCALL&sPos=40

Smilo, That's why we love you. Although you may have to change the word Few to one shortly if I can't gather more interest. I am actually working with a local Jr High School ( computer class, Art class combo ) on the benefits of learning history, computer programs and computer art all in one sitting by starting with CFS1. I will update ya'll on that..I hope.

Dave

there is no doubt that it can get frustrating
and more than a little discouraging.
witness most of my posts.
what else can i say?
why do you think we call ourselves DieHards?
hang tough, buddy.
