HU: New Il-38 @ avsim.su

When using this plane, one needs to set up their flight controls with the included joystick utility in order to get proper systems functionality. Remember, set up your stick with the utility, and then disable the stick in the flight sim controls menu. Although FS will show the stick as "disabled", it will still work with this aircraft if you set it up properly in the utility. This is the key to achieving full functionality with this aircraft. That being said, I am still hoping that someone will provide an abbreviated English-language manual for those unfamiliar with the aircraft.

[Thats why I cheated, I removed the troublesome panel and replaced it with vlads An12 panel, just so i can get it started and flying without the head ache incured in using the origional.
ctl+e works and no control surface probs.

Steve /QUOTE]

This works for me 100% :salute:
cheers ian

Thanks a lot for this heads-up !
The plane is absolutely beautifull and it works perfectly in FSX SP2.
I didn't read the documentation yet, and could not start the engines with CTRL+E, so I used the old transition trick. I love it.
Thanks to the authors of this excellent addon :ernae:

Interestingly, I had no issue w/ the control surfaces fluttering despite not having calibrated the stick......I wonder if was somehow reading the settings for the tu-154???
Also, the engines start w/ ctrl+E here....:confused:

For those who have gear problems, you have to flip the 4(maybe one would suffice...not tested!) switches on the left panel first, each one is under a round gauge, easy to spot.

Also, there's a basic manual in word format, which, although written in cyrillic, has pics detailing the startup procedure.

Good luck with this fine aircraft! :jump:

In FSX SP2, I get CTD trying to click on anything to do with the engine start-up sequence. Any tips on that? What do you mean by "old transition trick?

In FS9SW my Ilych works fairly well. I removed the "joy service" section in the panel.cfg, which reduced the control surface jitters. I run through the start sequence by the numbers and push ctrl+e if the starter light does not come on.

I do not get any CTDs here.
As for the transition, my mistake, I mistyped it. I was trying to refer to "translation", the slew mode in other words. Press Y, press F4, press Y again, your engines are ON :)
(but your alternators and batteries still are not)

Hi,

This plane is already confifigured for SW lighting, and the smoke fx are "Nicks 747"!
Non of it works!
Such a shame, as it is a great plane!
You can have smoke if you make some "personnal work" ....

i3i5ch.jpg

I used the smoke from the Antonov BK12

In the panel I use (BK12 as cheater like SteveB .. lol) you must be sure have this stance
[Window00]
gaugeXX=An12zh!Smoke, 0,0,20,20

Note:
You can certainly use this gauge in the original panel of the IL38 !

And for the location of the smoke effect in the light section of aircraft.cfg

[lights]

//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing

light.0 = 3, 1.3, -62.3, 1.8, fx_navredh,
light.1 = 3, 1.3, 62.3, 1.8, fx_navgreh,
light.2 = 3, -0.5, -62.3, 1.8, fx_navredh,
light.3 = 3, -0.5, 62.3, 1.8, fx_navgrem,
light.4 = 4, 57.0, 0.0, 25.90, fx_vclight_154vH ,
light.5 = 1, -43.4, 0.00, -3.70, fx_vclight,
light.6 = 4, 30.0, -0.15, 0.56, fx_vclighth ,
light.7 = 4, -1.0, -1.10, 7.00, fx_vclighth ,--
light.8 = 4, -38.0, -1.10, 7.00, fx_vclighth ,
light.9 = 5, 2.5, 60.50, 0.80,fx_Shockwave_landing_light_narrow ,
light.10 = 5, 2.5, -60.50, 0.80,fx_Shockwave_landing_light_narrow ,
light.11 = 5, 48.3, -3.30, -2.1, fx_ES_3d-lights_VC_blue
light.12 = 5, 48.3, 3.30, -2.1, fx_ES_3d-lights_VC_blue
light.13 = 5, 34.50, 4.20, -2.30,fx_Shockwave_landing_light_narrow ,
light.14 = 5, 34.50, -4.20, -2.30,fx_Shockwave_landing_light_narrow
light.15 = 7, -12.81, -15.01, 1.53, zh_An12smok
light.16 = 7, -10.45, -29.83, 2, zh_An12smok
light.17 = 7, -12.82, 15.02, 1.53, zh_An12smok
light.18 = 7, -10.45, 29.83, 2, zh_An12smok

light.19 = 1, -43.3, 0.00, -3.7, fx_beaconb
light.20 = 1, -68.5, 0.00, 25.5, fx_beaconb

And the smoke chapter become:

//[smokesystem]
//smoke.0 = 0.000, -15.00, -30.00, fx_nicksmoke747
//smoke.1 = -1.000, -17.00, -14.80, fx_nicksmoke747
//smoke.2 = -1.000, -17.00, 14.80, fx_nicksmoke747
//smoke.3 = 0.000, -15.00, 30.00, fx_nicksmoke747

So the best is to have first the Antonov BK12 (from Vladimir Zhyhulskiy) already installed or maybe pickup from this plane the files needed.....

About the SW lights (yes it's bizarre to not include a Lights default chapter) .. I'm fortunate to have them ... but it must be possible (again with personnal work :) ) to use some default lights ...

Good luck !

PS :
stuartcox
If you have problem I can send you the stuff (smoke) .. ready to use :)

The people getting control surface flutter I think have force feed back sticks, this can be fixed in the airfile, it should not affect non ff sticks.

I have'nt got it but may download to fix FF.

Big thanks to "cheating" Steve and Claudius!
I've got a great working model now, using the Orion P3 sounds.
I deleted the smoke in your light section as you can only have 18, and the beacons don't show up.
For smoke I use the stock 'smoke_ys11.fx', works fine!
Cheers, Stuart.

If I may quickly recommend the sounds from the Samdim Design Tupolev Tu-114 turboprop.
Obviously the sounds that come with this IL-38 are rather quiet...so.....

Thanks Sean!
Not only the sound, but also the 2D panel is very nice!

With all these tweaks and suggestions in the last day or so, I think I'm gonna re-install the IL-38 and try again. :)

Other than adding different sounds, I've been operating this aircraft without tweaks just fine for the last couple of days.

All you have to do is set up the joystick utility (which is pretty easy to do), and follow some of the procedures outlined in the aircraft's manual (located in its aircraft folder).
After you start the engines, don't forget to align the gyros and nav instruments!
Following that, make sure your flap settings are adequate for takeoff power, and off you go!

If anyone needs help with operating this aircraft, let me know! I know that it's a pretty complex beast for most here, and I'm sure my time with the Project Tupolev Tu-154M helps a lot, but it's very rewarding operating this aircraft without sacrificing realism.

Thanx for the heads up..a great plane....code named "MAY" by the CIA.A cold war warrior. since 1961.I liked the nose art..the Soviet Polar Bear....it down loaded OK....as it sits on the Ramp ,the thing is heavy loaded ..maxed out!...its cockpits are ,a learning process...the Turbines take time to get started...now this hulking brute is no C-172....you got to think way ahead...with that serpent tail,gotta watch dragging it.....A lumbering hunk of heavy metal.....I liked it..on the ramp in Moscow it paints an ominous picture, in the snow.....I call it......The Siberian Express ,one Way Na zdorovia :ernae:

Finally got to fly this beast. Great plane, Joy-service worked already out-of-the-box. Photo-real textures are very well done, even though usually I prefer to hand-painted textures.

Speaking of which, I feel like I want to make a paintkit for this. The mapping is really easy to work with it. Would make available some new paints like Egypt or India. Maybe a good project?

More well-done liveries for this aircraft would be pretty neat! India, and maybe even the livery of the IL-18 radar testbed aircraft (as a stopgap before the actual IL-18 for the sim arrives. Hey, the IL-38 does have the MAD tail-boom after all!)

IL-18 electronics testbed. The windows are obviously more numerous and in a different location since it's an actual IL-18, so this may have to wait:

I have yet to find an image of one in Egyptian colors, but here is a neat tail logo on a Russian one:

Go for it, I would love too see some different paint schemes on this superb model.

Confusing, but good model

I love the visual appeal of this aircraft. Butwhen I apply my throttles, it also moves the rudders.

Can somebody state in simple english how to fly this aircraft in FS9 by uncoupling the throttles and rudders, calibrating the nav instruments, etc.? I suppose I am requesting a simple english manual.
Thanks
