IBnet

I use it now for a year, it works great no leg during close formation flights. also you can see a lot of features from youre flying buddy, like lights, speedbrakes and canopy open or close.

its realy a must for flying in formation, also usable next to FSinn what we are using to connect to VATSIM.

The only thing you need is the client version en the server......(who has to be on an other IP adress to connect)
 
one of the greatest things about IBnet is you can also see weapons effect from your mates....and hear them as well. A Squadron mate wanted to practice ACM and he was in a Zero,me in a F4F wildcat. He got the drop on me and pull up on my 6 and i could see & hear the rounds wizzing by
 
I know iBnet has long been touted as the one to go to for lag free flight, especially in close formation as mentioned above. Also I have heard that it allows for viewable animations from other players, again as has already been mentioned. Yet, with all that going for it, most MP servers run FSHost or they use Gamespy which I personally find useless.

So the question I have for someone who is well versed in the iBnet system is this:
Why is it rarely talked about or used (yes I know that those who use it will dispute that and insist that it's widely used)? Also, is there something about the downloads required to run it or something else internal that keeps it from simply leaving FSHost in the dirt. . .or even making it obsolete?
 
The latest version of FSHost allow you to see other players animations and some if not all effects. I used IBnet in FS9 and couldn't understand myself why it hadn't become more popular? Multiplayer in FS9 with IBNet is smoother than Gamespy and FSX and ran without issue for the 6 months I used it. I guess some things just don't catch on? If IBnet could be used for FSX I'd go back to it in a heartbeat.

I keep reading that, about FShost, but don't see what you mention....I fly at fstopgun.org and his server has fshost, but I see nothing, but the usual landing gear, and nothing else. Also I see the screenies look nice above, but I do not see anyones loadouts other that the author of the shots.

I want to try something to see all the goodies from my fellow pilots....what EXACTLY do I need to get IBnet up and running?
 
Well, I've done a bit more reading both from the iBnet website and some of the forums that talked about it and also the english translation manual done by Mike Maddox. What I personally take away from the info I've read is this:

iBnet setup is high maintenance
iBnet does not work with FS2002 or FSX
iBnet does not display older 2002 aircraft

Along with that, if you are using an older version of iBnet you have to generate ini files to allow for animations/lights/smoke effects, etc on your own. (if you have the newer version it's done automatically).

Again, this is personal opinion, but I see now why FSHost has reigned supreme for as long as it has. . .it's simple to setup and simple to use. iBnet is not and so despite the "no lag" ability of the software, most multiplayer servers simply find FSHost a better option.

One thing I would suggest to the folks who have the iBnet website is to streamline the downloads page so it's easier to figure out, ie:
There are two "English version" manuals to download (why). . .pick one and dump the other.
There are several versions of the iBnet software for download (why). . .if the newest version is the best get rid of the old versions.

With FSHost (FS9) or FSHost Client (FSX) you download one file, install it and fly, if iBnet ever gets to that state of simplicity I might give it a try.

Slund.....I cannot see these things you mention when connected to a server running FSHost....is there something special I have to do in order to see other players animations besides having the boxes checked in FS9?
 
Sorry I didn't reply sooner Warhawk. I am using FSX and FSHost client to connect but we were able to see the retardant drop effect from each others aircraft? I didn't set up anything special or tick any boxes that I remember to get it to work. I don't know about Fs9 but from what I remember reading there shouldn't be a difference? The odd part is that after moving my computer to a new location and a different internet connection I haven't been able to see other players effects. I have't had the time to look into it but I'm wondering if it might have something to do with port forwarding?
 
Sorry to bring up an old thread but it may help those who had given up on IBNET

The problem with IBNET is that its an absolute pain to get working first time round.....but an absolute dream and easy to setup when it does


I think the average flightsimmer is happy with a click and play multiplayer system which FSHost suits where as IBNET is a system suited more to the wingtip to wingtip flightsimmer

Im actually in the process this week as I type of reforming an old formation team using IBNET back up to flying again, iv'e re-setup IBNET for 5 memebers at the moment and believe we have 3 more that I have to set up on saturday night and as the person that setup Mike Maddox im more then happy to help anyone who has any problems or queries they'd like to ask
