Iwo Jima Scenery Coming Along

This is looking great! I just flew to Iwo Jima and I was very surprised with the default FSX Iwo Jima scenery, its almost non existant! I was thinking to myself that I wish there was some scenery I could add on for this historic place. You guys are doing a great job. I will also be downloading when its done :applause:

Couldn't resist, first evening with a working FSX again after three weeks. Thought I'd fire up the Iwo Jima WIP for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Tom's doing a real good job of blending the airfields into the hilly ASTER surface and populating the scenery.

Here's a few shots of a dawn patrol around the island... first one is the western shore, second one from Mt. Suribachi. Note Motoyama 1 airfield, with #2 far in the mist.

Cheers,
Mark

Flew past Iwo last night, almost retracing the route of returning B29's from Tokyo, in this case Guam instead of Tinian. Bit dark out there!

Cheers from Guam! T

Here is another shot of the work Roger Wilco 66 and I are working on. The airfields are just about done with personnel, vehicles, structures and static P-51D's. We are waiting for a B-29 from Guy Dottie to put the big bombers on the island. This looking directly south from just north of Motoyama 2. You can see Motoyama 1 and Mt. Suribachi in the background. Yes there will be a flag atop Mt. Suribachi. There will also be a few Marines on Red Beach.

John and Roger, thanks for the comments. John, I had to respond and say I have been flying my P-51D's 100% of the time so as you can see I was flying the F-4U Corsair for a change. Must be an aircraft from a carrier, maybe even one that was flying the bombing and attack missions before the island was secure. Just fun stuff anyway. We have all the ingredients to allow for AI to fly in and out of the two airfields. One that looks pretty cool is an AI C-47 flying back and forth.

This project was brought back to life by Roger Wilco 66. I had started it two years ago and just didn't know how to do land class and terrain. We are indebted to Mark for providing that and bringing things to life. We will keep you posted as to when it will be ready.

No need for 'explaining', Tom. ; )

It's too bad we don't have a 'great' B-29 to use in FSX, let alone one that is native/built for FSX (then again, it wasn't until just this past summer that we finally had a properly-configured P-51 to fly from Iwo).

Great to hear about the AI possibilites/capabilities as well!

We have just about everything complete. Roger Wilco 66 is completing the Solomon Island objects very soon as many will be used on Iwo Jima. Here is another little preview of several Stangs with Motoyama 2 in the background.

Thanks Jan, you paint - I download. Let us know when they are done. I check Oz often.

Thats looking totally awesome Tom. Since I just oopened my eyes I cant remember which one, but an NFS was stationed there along with the mustangs and superforts. Some pretty funny stories came off that island about the way the cowboys looked down their noses at the P-61 drivers, till a couple things happened that made them change their minds and they started respecting the big ole twins..
Later on, from Ie Shima when the army switched to daylight flights, the mustangs would fly alongside P-61s as escorts during daylight attacks.. Dont know if its the same mustangs, although it was the same NFS..
I'm really looking forward to this scenery. Got a whole slew of widows to place on her..
Pam

Thanks Pam, many of the pictures of Iwo Jima after taking the island show several P-61's on the line. I believe they were of the 548th and 549th Night Fighter Squadrons of the Seventh Air Force. They were activated in April and May respectively. Since they were part of the team I will see if I can put a couple of Black Widows on the island. Great idea. We are very close.
