JetCamVideo: Utilizing The HUD

The HUD...not really neccesary in an Air Transport Category plane, but alot of fun to use. In Flight Sim the HUD is very convenient because of the field of view limitations, and in the RW a fighter with a HUD is a must because of the mission and type of flying. In an airliner....well, it's just a cool gee-whiz thing. If you're wondering why have it at all, it's a convenience item for use in some extremely low-vis approach's, and hand flying in mountainous regions.

The HUD in the CRJ series is on a hinge, and stow's into a recessed ceiling cradle if you choose not to use it. Not all CRJ's have it, though. It's an option from the factory.

In the video, I have the brightness up much higher than normal because the camera wasn't able to see the symbology at a normal user setting. So, if while watching you're thinking it's a little too bright, that's because it is.

I wonder how many percent of the commuter/RJ fleet is equipped with HUDs.

The thing is that Dornier offered HUDs in the 328 as an option. I now fear that most of the ones in airline service have it installed and that I subsequently have to make it for the FSX model...

That's way cool. From the angle of the combiner glass ... it looks like the projector is on the ceiling. Is that right? Looks like the glass is angled bottom side closer to you, top side closer to the window...

The percentage is small, I would think.

And Bjoern, I consider you to be a pretty smart and savvy guy, so I would emplore you to drop the "commuter" affiliation when thinking of RJ's. We do up to 4.5 hour legs, covering the US, Canada, Mexico, Carribean, and into Belize. The pay is 6 figures once you are a captain with modest longevity, and the DOT test of being a "Major" is based on revenue of 1 Billion dollars or more a year...which most of the large "commuters" reached many years ago. If you want to talk about fleet size, you might be shocked to know that the largest "commuters' have more planes, pilots, carry more passengers, and generate more revenue a year than many airlines in the world that are considered "majors". Alot of people, like myself, decided a long time ago that the lure of the "major" was more sh*t than shine, and we didn't want to take the pay cut to sit at the bottom of a major airline's seniority list and be furlough fodder. I've been at this airline since early 1993, and I know many guys who are sorry they made the jump to the "majors" because they've spent the majority of their careers on furlough instead of flying. Just food for thought.

Yep, good eye. The projector is on the ceiling, and the glass is as you say. The left side of the glass is slightly closer to the pilot also.

Six figure income?...not bad considering the state of the airline business..especially over this side of the pond. I know of Boeing 738 pilots on much much....MUCH less over here.

We're very productive. Most people have no idea what is really going on in this industry, they just go for the media hype, and make alot of assumptions.

Out of curiosity, do you have a busier work schedule than the "majors" (more flights per month/year)? Sometimes profitability is achieved by more work per person (not always good).

An acquaintance of mine flies for Alaska Airlines, preferring to take the in-state routes, because he is home with his family even on day's he flies. It is this nice feature that drew him to the airline. I don't know where Alaska falls in the size of corporation (lower end I presume).

Yes, we typically fly more, alot more. That's what I meant by "productive".

Phew!

Commuters and RJs are two different things, hence the "/", but generally don't have the prestige of the mainline airlines, hence me throwing both of them into a single bowl to ask about the probability of their aircraft having HUDs installed, since I think that the probability of having a HUD aboard a "mainline" airliner is way higher...longer routes, higher fares, more prestige in the public eye...blah...

Thanks Bone WOWZERS!

I've jumpseated on just about every type of plane in the inventories of most US mainlines, and I've never seen a HUD on any of them. Maybe in the EU you'll find them, but not in the US. The majority of planes in the US airline inventories were built before anyone ever thought of putting a HUD in an airliner.

As far as prestige, I still keep in contact with about 20 guys who left to go to United Airlines in late 2000, and they would cry at the term. They're furloughed again for the second time, and the furlough goes back to 1999 pilot hires...there are currently 1300 pilots on furlough there. If you were hired at United between late 2000 and the summer of 2001, you would have about two years of total flying with the company and 8 years of being furloughed. American Airlines still has 1800 pilots on furlough from the layoff in 2001, and that's a continuous furlough. US Airways?? I know people who spent the entire 1990's on furlough there, and are sitting on the bottom over there right now. Could you imagine that after 20 years, you would still be an FO at the bottom of the seniority list? Captain Sulley's FO has 26 years at US Airways. I just don't see the prestige...it's a joke. The "prestige" is in the eyes of the outsiders who are looking in, trying to look in, anyway. I have more furlough data for you, but it would be pointless.

I'm sorry, Bjoern, if I'm coming off as rude, as I said I think you're a smart guy. But, I deal with clueless attitudes about this industry all of the time, especially at the airport. Outsiders have a really naive perspective when it comes to this industry. There are people who think that a military guy who just graduated from pilot training is the paragon of aviation knowledge, skill, and experience, and an RJ guy couldn't fly his way out of a wet paper bag. One has 200 hours and the other has 18,000 hours...and yes this was a real conversation in the gate area at the airport, and I almost told this idiot he was too stupid to fly on my airplane.

Sorry again, Bjoern. I didn't intend for this thread to go down this road, I just made the mistake of trying to calibrate the perspective. It's a losing battle I'm afraid. I'm glad I am where I am, and it's the best place I could be, seeing as how I know so many "Major" guys on food stamps.

Back in the dark ages (1980s), the A-7E's HUD was not considered a “downing discrepancy”, meaning if it broke, the plane could still (legally) fly. No so with today's Hornets and “Super” Hornets. The HUD in these planes is the primary flight instrument and if it's broke the plane is “down.” And when the FA-18 hit the fleet, the A-6s were still in service and would be for years. They don't even have a HUD!

On HUDs and combiner glass ideas, the original F-14As used the front windshield, which is after all flat, as the combiner glass. I think this idea went away with the later F-14s, and I've never seen that idea used anywhere else. I'll guess because it was a royal pain in the butt to bore sight the F-14As HUD. You have to bore sight them. In The A-7E that meant hanging this big yellow rack on the nose of the plane, align it perfectly with telescopes and lights, then climb into the cockpit, remove the HUD, and turn three screws that adjusted the HUD mount, while peering into a telescope screwed into the HUD mount, aimed at the alignment rack. Of course turning the “Y” alignment screw would throw the other two adjustments out of wack. So you'd turn the “Z” screw, which threw off X and Y... And on it went, into the night... You kept at it until the cross hairs in the telescope were perfectly lined up with the target on the alignment rack. Then you had to tighten and safety with the three adjustment screws, which would often, yep, throw the alignment off. It was enough to make you take up beer drinking! Oh wait, we already did that... This bore sighting had to be done to the HUD, the INS, radar, and 20mm gun. But the HUD was the most tedious.

Hey Bone My amen was aimed at the PHEW!!!! I have never used a HUD in real life that is one great video! Makes on kinda nervous though because you depending so much on electronics to be 100% accurate. Thanks again

Oh, okay then. :)

No offense taken and none delivered.

I was kind of in a "stay as diplomatic as possible without backing down" mood yesterday (thanks to a cold plus lack of sleep), so everything may have come off slightly rougher than intended.

You airline guys are my greatest heroes. Captain Dave's FL390 is better than any book and one of my most favourite sites on the vast WWW. I don't care if you have seniority issues, fly high, low, long haul, puddle jump, on two engines, three engines or four engines. You love what you're doing, regardless of seniority issues, you love to talk about it and every tale makes me want to rob a bank and do an AQAP (as quick as possible) ATPL course and get a right seat somewhere.
I don't care if it's a commuter, a RJ or a mainliner, I just want to fly...something with a jet(prop) engine.

So, here's to you and all your airline colleagues. :ernae:

Well, Bjoern, I wasn't chewing you out, although it probably read that way. And I wasn't offended by you, because you didn't really say anything offensive. I just tried to line the proverbial Ducks up a little, and true to internet form, it turned into a bloated-something that wasn't intended. I took no offense from texnetcop either.

I've put a link to the JetCamVideos in my signature block, so if anyone wants to see them, that's where they will be. If I do anymore in the future, I'll drop them in there. Cheers.

A girl would say "Group hug" by now, but what do real men say instead? "Pizza, beer and hookers, dudes!"? :icon_lol:

Sure, just notify us whenever there's a new one up. :d

Are you sure you're not an American? I swear, I always feel like I'm talking to an American, and not a German.
