Kawasaki Ki48-II Lily

Unit: 208the Light Bomber Air Combat Regiment, 3rd Company, New Guinea, April 1944

Designated a light bomber by the Japanese, the Ki.48 was Japan’s answer to the Russian SB-2 bombers encountered in China, which had proven almost as fast as the Ki-27 "Nates" sent to intercept them. Kawasaki received the specification in December 1937 and a team led by Doi Takeo based the design on lessons learned from the Ki.45 "Nick". The Ki.48 prototype was completed July 1939...

Thanks Capt! Is this a IIa or a IIb? I think I recall that the IIb had dive brakes so that it could be used as a dive bomber? No doubt that there were examples where the brakes were removed.

It was used in Burma but at the end of 1942 and on through the war's end. See the picture for units operating the Lily.

It's could either be a IIa or a IIb. The IIb was produced with dive flaps similar to the design used by the Ju 88. However operational units routinely removed the flaps as soon as they got the plane to save weight and because they weren't operating as dive bombers. From all the photos I have seen, the only one that showed dive flaps was a factory promotion pic.
