Laos 1968 Air America scenery

There seems to be a shitload of changes with every SU MS releases. In the newest one, they seem to have altered the digital elevation model (DEM) for that part of the world, as well as ground textures again.
Now I have to go through each and every one of the 56 airfields again to make corrections. This happend for the thrid time now while I am at it.

GRRR!

Yeah, I feel you.

Some time ago I released the Flying the Hump scenery which was working great in MSFS 2020... until the new aerials and associated buildings and vegetation made it unusable. Over 70 airfields to correct. Not sure I will ever do it.

I keep fingers crossed for you!

Oh that's interesting! I also made a big CBI Scenery in P3D, but never released it because I got caught up in other stuff. I made a huge load of scenery objects for it, which were modeled from original photos.
Did you release your scenery? I love the CBI scenario!

I will go through all the airfields of the Air America scenery again, but it is a bit disheartening because you never know when they update ground textures or dem data.

Cheers,

As beautiful as it is...this software is almost more trouble than it's worth! I probably have 50 beautiful IMO custom airports I've built, many with the assistance of the airport manager and/or the architect who designed the terminal. NONE of them work in this MSFS STUFF! I don't know enough to convert them or I would. From FS9 through FSX through Prepar3D it was almost always possible to bring our stuff into the new sims. ESpecially with MDCx (a big "hats off to Arno") I am awed by you being able to design the 56 airports in MSFS 2020. Thank you for all your time and effort not to give up but fix what they screw up over and over.

I'm with you. RW-66 has done an amazing job bringing these airstrips to life in an amazing way. Like you I have at least 80 custom airports that I had hoped to bring into MSFS but that will never happen.

Sorry to see you are having to grapple with this probem as well. For our Hadrian's Wall 180 scenery we had to rework about 50 of the 73 miles of Wall after the 2024 scenery and DEM was integrated into 2020 and are only now close to releasing the update.

I hope you can get it sorted for this scenery though as I an really looking foward to it. It was a project that I also had in mind given the number of Air America related aircraft we now have available.

Well, it does not look so miserable as it it did in the beginning. I had to adjust only 14 of the 54 air strips. And I already made 3 new ones. So I am full steam on the project :) Hope it stays this way.
I am back from a 5 week trip to the Phillipines and came back with a lot of texture fotos of plants and SEA typical objects and will add some new scenery objects to the libraries.
And have plans to retire to the Phillipines, but that is another project, hehe!

Cheers,
Mark

Subic Bay??? LOL

Today I reached the milestone of 70 airfields. The south of Laos is completed (Bolovens Plateau). I have seven airfields left to do in the north, and two major ones (Vientane and Udorn, which is in Thailand but very relevant to the scenery as well as to the story).

After that I will revisit every one to make corrections, but most of them should be OK, since I have done that over the time anyhow.

Way to go! But it closes in.

Thank you guys, much appreciated. I am sort of in the end sprint with all that. Today I had a bit free time and made three new airfields :)

I love to integrate the airfields so they fit into the landscape in an authentic way, using natural surroundings and sometimes a bit of artistic freedom since I do not have old photos from many of them. And if I do it is difficult to pinpoint the time frame.
Five more on my list, plus the two airports :)

Cheers,
Mark

Wow! I just scrolled through the thread and, all I can say, this is extremely impressive. Amazing work and attention to detail, from what you’ve shared. I applaud your dedication. I’ll be eagerly waiting for you to complete the project. I have the twenty or thirty period-correct airfields available on Flightsim.to for South Vietnam, plus the handful of Lima Sites for Laos in my community folder.

One of my go to routines is to load up an Air America livery - C-47, C-46, Beech 18, C-7, DC-6, or a Pilatus, and shuttle back and forth between the airstrips and firebases. This will be a very welcome addition! Cheers!

Thanks! You're going to have a lot of shuttle missions here :) Also a lot of airfields which are really hard to negotiate, as most of them have a terraforming profile, and are one way as well as very short. Just the way they were, and I use the original air facilities data from the Air America / CIA pamphlets for all of them. That can be interesting with tail-or cross winds or in marginal weather.
As far as aircraft go, every LS has also a heli pad so you can start a heli mission from them. I love Taogs Huey with Jan Kees AA livery for that.

I miss a few good aircraft for the scenery:

- Helio Courier
- C-119 (had it in P3D)
- C-123K (did not someone start on one a few years ago?)
- Sikorsky H-34
- T-28 B/D -> Antony is at it

Best,
Mark

Hi Jan, don't know yet. I thought flightsim.to, but have not decided on that. My Solomon scenery was exclusively hosted here on SOH. I also could do that with the Laos scenery, but the scenery is really large due to the big object libraries.

Cheers,
Mark
