Making Solomons Rhumba Mesh Compliant

If I had to choose I would go with the dirt.
However, I like them both! The variety adds more depth to the scenery.
Maybe the fields next to the sea are closer to the fresh crushed coral deposits and sea salt washed. Inland fields could be dirtier and dustier, away from the shoreline breezes. :isadizzy:

These screen shots look so good and close to an un-tweaked Fs9.
It's a slightly difficult one this. Fresh coral would be brilliant white, old dirty coral would be darker, but it's the contrast between the coral and the surrounding land that's important.
Personally I think the dirty coral is a little too dark (not enough contrast), whilst the fresh coral is great at representing new bases, but maybe somewhere in between, to get a better contrast, but not bright white. Also the runway tex colour/dirty-ness makes a difference between the two sets.
Shame there's only one coral colour able to be shown!

Interesting point. You'd naturally think it. In reality there were no coral reefs nearby and what coral was around was inland "uplifted" coral sitting on top of limestone. It was so slushy and rotten that it couldn't be used and "fresh" coral actually had to be "imported"- from where I do not know. The runways at the strip nearest the water, Fighter II were actually bedded with tamped down sod.
I think I am going to go with a custom runway texture that I made along time ago that is a dirty grey. I think if I put it in the project texture folder it will be used by CFS2 without changing the coral runways of every others strip in the PTO. Hope so, anyway.
Anyway you look at them the runways at Guadalcanal were a mess a lot of the time. The runway the Japaneses built that got the whole Guadalcanal Campaign started was the worst of all- just barely 2700 feet long and falling to pieces from day one.

BTW, interesting point, the Japanese when building their strip were apparently careful not to intrude across the barbed wire fence that separated the airfield location from the Lever Brothers palm oil plantation that separated the airfield location from the shore. Lever Brothers had these plantation all over the Solomons- Palm-aide, shortening, margarine and soap ingredients- and after the War the USA paid them 7 million dollars for damages to their plantations throughout the Solomons. Don't know what that amounts to in today's dollars. Point being that the in the beginning anyway, Japanese were more mindful of Lever Brothers property interests than the USA seemed to be! Tisk-tisk! ;^)

Yeah, in fact, excess stick time. I am too easily distracted from the main task at hand. However, I think I am finally finished "over working" this ground texturing issue and am ready to push on to Koli Pont, the Russels and then- the New Georgia Group. That is going to be major undertaking.
Yep, gotta love FSMetars. It enhances all the other enhancements that people have added to CFS2 over the years. What a truly great collaborative community effort CFS2 has been.

Further progress
Koli Point fields painted in. Still need to add a few connecting roads between Lunga and Koli points and scenery objects to Carney and Carney2. Might release what I have so far- Rennell, Belona, Santa Isabel, Malaita, Floridas, Russells and Guadalcanal- for beta testing purposes. We'll see.

Mbanika Island, Russell Group, Solomons
Steady progress, Putting finishing touches on Sunlight Channel and Renard Sound Airfields on Mbanika Island in the Russell Group. Mabanika was a Plantation Island owned by Lever Brothers. They grew copra-coconut palms and these two airfields were carved out of their plantations. The USA settled with Lever Brothers after the war for damages to plantations on Mbanika and Guadalcanal- Henderson Field, as it spread out, was also built into lever Brothers property.
The scenery objects here are minimal so far and likely will remain so. In reality the runways and dispersal taxiways were bulldozed right in between and thru rows of coconut palms.
In the first top-down view north is at top, Sunlight Channel field is the northern field with Sunlight Channel west of it. Sunlight Channel is the the channel running all the way between the two big islands of Pavuvu on the west and Mbanika on the east. In the second top down, North is to the left as is Sunlight Channel field. Renard sound runs SW thru the center of the picture.
Renard Sound field was a bomber strip- 6300 feet. Sunlight Channel field was a fighter strip- 4700

Interesting historical note: At the south end of Sunlight Channel is a narrow finger of water jutting into the SW coast of Mbanika Island. That is Wernham Cove. It was the sight of a PT Boat base- the very first "home port" of LTJG John F. Kennedy when he arrived in the PTO.

When I finish up with the Russell Group I will release what I have so far of reworked Rhumba-Mesh-compliant Solomons- everything from Rennell and Bellona Islands in the SE to the Russells. New Georgias group is next up and it is going to require some serious time.
