Well who'd have thought it! :isadizzy:

I was just checking the download stats for my repaints and the Swiss Paris repaint has just become my most popular repaint so far. It just pipped the JetSet one for the title!

I know it's a nice paint scheme but I never thought it would reach 100 downloads never mind 240 (at the present time).

BTW if you are wondering why my Paris repaints have suddenly dried up it's because I hit computer problems last week and the only way out of them was to reformat my C: drive and reinstall XP and all my software again. Several days later I am still adding software but on an 'as needed' basis now and the good news is that all my paint kit files were safe so I should be able to pick up the painting process again shortly.

This plane was designed and built in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:country-region><st1lace>France</st1lace></st1:country-region>, so I thought it deserves some French markings, doesn't it? And who ever would have dreamed of such a little known plane being covered with so much care in Flight Simulator?<o></o>

Yet this is work in progress, there still are plenty of details to be refined, so please indulge… Each time I look at the screenshots I realize how much work still has to be done!<o></o>

N°01 as seen during its 4 ½ months commercial tour to the <st1:country-region><st1lace>USA</st1lace></st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region><st1lace>Canada</st1lace></st1:country-region> (1955); it should have no VOR antennas on the fin and just a short VHF whip aerial over the nose. This aircraft suffered a landing accident in <st1:City><st1lace>Lisbon</st1lace></st1:City> in May 1958, caught fire and was written off.<o></o>

N°26 - Escadron de Reconnaissance 2/33 “Savoie”, early sixties. As with all French Air Force MS760s, whatever the period, it should have the very prominent dorsal VHF2 crescent shaped antenna (painted black or very dark grey in this instance) on top of the fuselage. The VOR antennas on the fin sides are non-relevant for this early machine, as are the OMI, IFF and DME antennas under the front fuselage.<o></o>

N°34 - Escadron de Transport et d’Entrainement 2/65 "Rambouillet", 1975. This one lacks the ubiquitous large crescent shaped VHF2 antenna, painted dark grey-green on this instance<o></o>

N°35 - 2<SUP>ème</SUP> Escadre de Chasse, early sixties. The colour of the flashes on the tip tanks is only guesswork, working from 50 years old B&W pictures. This aircraft should have no VOR antennas on the fin sides and no OMI, IFF and DME antennas under the front fuselage. The very large crescent shaped VHF2 antenna on the fuselage spine should still be there, as always.<o></o>

N°39 as used by the French Civil Aviation Authority to train future airline pilots in the early seventies. The VHF2 antenna on the 6 machines used by this Authority was a large horizontal "V" shaped affair mounted on top of a forwards-canted mast, exactly like on the 14 French Navy aircraft. The 6 planes used by the French Civil Aviation Authority (F-BJET, F-BJLV, F-BJLX, F-BJLY, F-BNRG and F-BOJO) had no VOR antennas on the fin sides.<o></o>

N°65 - Escadron de Liaison 41 "Verdun", 1978. All antennas are nearly correct except for the missing VHF2 antenna; and, by the way, the VOR antennas on the fin sides should be half-rounded in shape, not rectangular as if they were looking like drawer handles<o></o>

N°73 - Escadron d'Expérimentation et de Transport 06.330 "Albret", 1997. This one should have the large VHF2 dorsal antenna too, obviously; and since it has red/white painted VOR antennas, the rogue rectangular shape is even more conspicuous<o></o>

N°116 - Centre d'Essais en Vol, 1985. Flight Test Centre aircraft have always had an avionics suite of their own, and this one is no exception. Yet the dorsal VHF2 blade antenna should be located further aft and it should be much larger – just like on most Argentine Air Force machines, by the way<o></o>

French Air Force MS760s were used as communication aircraft, most of the time carrying VIPs. Therefore they were kept in pristine condition, with little or no weathering or oil stains. In the early days the airframe was polished natural metal but later the aircraft were sprayed overall with a silver dope that gave them a satin finish. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

You will notice that the antenna arrangement varied greatly from one aircraft to the other, even when operated by the same user. So this is almost impossible to portray accurately, although some authors from time to time accept to take this kind of detail into account. Such has been the case with the FSX Vertol H-21 by Mick Posch or with the FS9 Cessna L-19 and Canadair CL-215 by Massimo Taccoli, for instance. Those little details make the difference.<o></o>

Unfortunately there are a couple of other problems with the MDL file. The most conspicuous one is the way the outer main landing gear doors have been made to operate: on a Morane Paris those doors were always open when the gear was extended. They did not just open and close at the moment when the gear was extending or retracting, as depicted on the model. Thus, a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1lace>Paris</st1lace></st1:City> on the ground always had those gear doors open, quite an unusual feature and a much visible detail indeed. This detracts from the overall appearance of the aircraft which otherwise would be very convincing. (N°71/DE was painted just for comparison purposes with a series of old B&W pictures I took way back in 1976. There seems to be a few snags about the nose shape, the curves in the forward fuselage area and the shadow on the rudder).<o></o>

I suspect there may be some kind of a problem with the way the tail assembly has been modelled, but this is faintly visible from most angles and does not detract from the overall appearance, which is magnificent.<o></o>

Another annoying point in the MDL file is the way the wing tip tanks are modelled, which prevents from accurately painting a separate colour on the outer faces of those tip tanks. Since the majority of the aircraft (nearly all French Air Force machines, the half-dozen used by the French Civil Aviation Authority, the ten used by the Centre d’Essais en Vol, many ones in the Argentine Air Force too, etc…) had the outer faces of the tanks painted dayglo at one time or another in their service life, this is kind of a pity. But might be someone has found a solution to paint them correctly? I made many trials, albeit without success.<o></o>

Now just in case you are interested in how a French Air Force MS760 instrument panel looked like, here is a picture showing what the layout was as from the early seventies and until the retirement of those aircraft in 2001. But here again things varied from one user to the other, and even the French Navy didn’t have the same layout as the Air Force!<o></o>

Finally, one afterthought: I have seen the paint kit by Tim Conrad (without which I would have been unable to make those repaints, obviously; so many thanks to him once again) has been downloaded more than 120 times. Yet I have only seen repaints by three or four persons. One really wonders why some people download such files, if they don't know how to use them.<o></o>

I managed to get a clean line in that area but it took me a long time and much hair pulling before I figured out what was going on.

That is exactly where the texture wraps around on itself and the area on the tex map is larger than the area used by the model. The paint down that centre-line is pulled from both sides of the tex area too and not just one and it is not pulled in a straight line either but zig-zags from side to side down the length.

I suggest you download my Jet-Set repaint (N760JS) and have a look at where I painted my line between the black and white on the tip tanks, both on the outer edges of the tex area and more importantly on the inner edges (the black is a bit hard to see against the black background but you should be able to see it against the white area on one side ... I can ). Just 1 pixel off those demarcation lines to either side and you will get the results shown above (it really is THAT critical).

Hopefully you will see what I did and will be able to correct your paint. Let us know how you get on with it.

He, he....and some have called me a 'rivet counter' with British aircraft!

Don't worry Tim, she is perfect for 99.9% of us, if we paid $50 for it, then I would expect a multitude of different aerials etc. , but at your price, the Paris is a total gem and great value for money!! Hopefully we will not have an Antonov specialist pop up in the near future, with the multitude of different version there, it could be a long post.
