Need Virtavia B-29 screenshots please

I'm undecided whether to buy this aircraft, as the more I look at what screenshots there are, the more I am puzzled. Here's a 'for instance' ..

The arrow points to what looks like an insert to the rear of the lower aft window, as if the window is recessed into the fuselage...

...whereas on the real thing, the window is flush fitting with the fuselage..

Am I seeing things ? And why has the forward upper turret only got two guns ?

I think the b-29 had a few models.. perhaps you're comparing two slightly different ones.. or perhaps indeed it's a mistake, but not too bad imo (throw them an email). I don't think that's a fault that should keep you from buying it.

That really looks like a boolean cut that went astray. I don't have a lot of B-29 reference material but what I have shows 4 '50's in the front forward turret. I also think that was subject to a lot of field mods.

Best, Paul

Sorry, Adi, while you are right that the B-29 came in different models, there was no variation in the basic fuselage shape. And I'm afraid its a mistake that genuinely is keeping me from buying it..at the moment. I need to see more screenies before deciding for good, however.

I would hate to see anyone deprive themselves of owning and flying such an iconic aircraft because of a small detail like a recessed window. However, we realize it's not a small issue to some so will have a look at to see if it warrants a mod. I can't make any promises as it is not my call.

As far as the turret is concerned, most early models had the 2 gun turret. However, one of the aircraft in the package "Heavenly Laden" does in fact have the 4- 50cals

Mal, I'm sorry, but it sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Its a big enough error to have immediately caught my eye. I think its because the lower window frames seem flat and don't follow the circumference of the fuselage at that point - and thats led to a mismatch with the circular cross-section of the fuselage immediately behind. Odd, because the window frames above the flight deck seem fine - they appear to conform with the curve of the fuselage.

Mal, thats good news, but Dina Might has four guns in every photo I can find of her, so why is the two-gun model used to represent her ?

we've already had some discussion about the window. As far as Dina Might goes, we'll add it to the list, but I'm thinking it might be possible to swap out the textures with the 4 gun model. We'll have a look at that.

It's far from perfect. But it's a great model to experience B-29 airshow like flybys. And the interior which is what I was worried about most is actually quite nice. I think the props spin up much too quickly from cold start, the engine cowling looks a little odd, but overall a fun ride. No smoke trails that I would have expected from this era aircraft. It's not A2A or Milviz, but no regrets adding this iconic aircraft to my hanger.

Okay Mal, I can't ask anything more than that. Its odd that its happened because from the nose to tail turret, the B-29 fuselage is a very simple shape - just perfect circles of varying diameter. I modeled one for FS98 using Abacus' Aircraft Factory. By the way, was the curvature of the rear bomb bay sorted out ? Can't be certain from the screenshots.

Anyway, for now, its definitely off my shopping list, sorry. All the best with it. :)

For those who want a 4-50cal turret on "Dina Might" open the aircraft.cfg and ammend model to read model=B-29A_late

....the engine cowling looks a little odd....

I was wondering about that too...it does look odd from some angles, but so do I......:blind:

I was hoping Virtavia would do a B-50 too (without the jet engines), but the more I look at the two aircraft (B-29 vs B-50), the less they have in common. Still, one can dream.....:santahat:

Interesting find. I checked many pictures of B-29 and never saw this cavity. Looks like small bug.

I'm with Tommieboy on the B-50. Would love to see the following:

-B-50D bomber large underwing tanks
-WB-50D weather recon with large underwing tanks

I like the B-29 (and bought it and am happy with it), but I'd LOVE a couple of B-50s. I was really hoping A2A would do one since they already had the wings, engines, gear and tail done with their B-377....but it's not to be, I'm afraid.

BTW-- has anybody gotten the Steve Ginter book on the B-50 (I have it)-- its GREAT.

I'd love to see someone at least do a few B-50 paints for the Virtavia bird (I'm an amateur as a painter-- so my stuff looks "not ready for prime time")...maybe a WB with some nice day-glo orange!!!

I just stumbled across it last week on Amazon, but didn't pick it up because it doesn't seem to have too many color photos if any? Is this true?

No color pictures except the cover....

That said however, it is simply wonderful detail-wise. There are TONS of B&W photos--exterior, interior and detail, excerpts from technical drawings, tech data excerpts, Boeing line drawings....

If you want a "coffee table" book of high resolution color photos, you would obviously not like it.

If you are a B-50 junkie and want to know loads and loads of details on the airplane and all of it's variants (and don't mind B&W photos), you'll LOVE it.

Based on your recommendation, I'll go ahead and pick up a copy. Maybe, I should pickup two copies, and send one over to Virtavia....:santahat:

The title to Dvj's screenshot should be: "View from cockpit of WB-29 on an early morning weather reconnaissance run en route from Eielson AFB to to Yokota AB"

Yeah, baby...
