need your opinions on bullet hole animation

I have just finished updating the AW F4U Corsair with this animation. It takes more than 3-4 hours to align approximately 70 bullet hole polygons.

Do you guys think this is a worthwhile addition to the aircraft? or it is not that useful. Once you are hit, you are almost dead anyway.

I need to update more than 20 AW aircraft with multiple versions.

Hi Andrew,

It sounds like a lot of hard work for little return. I can live without them.

Thanks for all the beautiful aircraft.

Kevin

Never would put bullet holes on any aircraft I was making my self as it is just too much work.

Andrew..... 70 is probably over the top, but 1 or 2 skip a few, would be ok.... just to show some damage, that it's been in a scuffle...

Hi Andrew, you are right when you say that they don’t show until you’re almost dead anyway. If not dead the aircraft is not exactly flyable. Most of time when I experimented the damage texture was visible at the same time the bullet holes showed. So really you could just paint them on the damage textures.

Cryingtoto’s Seafire is the only non-stock aircraft that I think that I have that has any kind of bullet-hole damage.

Honestly, it’s cool, but too much work for very little gain. Or else more 3rd party aircraft would have shown them. If CFS2 is telling me that my left aileron is shredded, and I can’t roll worth beans, what does seeing bullet holes does for me? Just my $.02.

I agree. They do look cool, but I think it is too much effort.
The way I use CFS2 aircraft in flying missions, if I get hit I usually have my hands full trying to get away from the fight and then landing somewhere, I don't have much time looking at the holes anyway.

Bullets holes need a lot of work, and are not visibles from far, damaged textures are quicker to do and have more effect.

Here the bullets holes made by a 0.303 (less than 8 milimeters) are nearly not visibles, a lot of work for a relative result...

A nice touch but not worth your time and effort. If I even saw them it'd be for a moment or two before I crashed or bailed out. My focus is elsewhere.

Thanks for all the comments. I am planning to upload this aircraft soon. I am updating it on the P-38 series, I think I can easily cut the time to 50% by reusing the bullets from the Corsair.

I am still checking for errors. You can have localize damages with bullet holes. I think you can also have multiple damage texture files with the damage texture option.

See this photo. The damage is on the starboard wing and not on the port wing. Sometimes, you can see progressive damages to the aircraft.

I just discovered that the bullet holes appear in the enemy aircraft. I thought it only shows up in the pilot's aircraft.

Makes sense to me, though. I mean, if that model already lets wings snap clean off an’ bullet holes poke through like Granny’s laundry on a clothesline, why in the world would it matter who’s flyin’ it? Could be me, could be the AI, could be ol’ Cletus with one eye half shut an’ the other on his beer — don’t change the fact that once the wings bust, it’s all just a race to the ground!

Shoot, I seen my cousin duct-tape a lawn chair to a go-kart frame once. Said, ‘Don’t matter who’s drivin’, chair’s still gonna break.’ He was right, too — we ended up sittin’ in the dirt laughin’ our fool heads off. Same principle, just a whole lot less altitude involved!

Just my 2 cents:

In all reality & fairness ... how can anyone see bullet holes at a closing speed of over 600knts (head to head)?
Maybe flying behind .. you could see them happen - that's cool.
But there will be a frame-rate hit.
Not a problem for me with 6GB of GDDR6 VRAM, but what about those with lesser video cards?

I do appreciate all the hard work you have invested.
