Nemeth EC-120B Colibri

No worries Gajit.

I am afraid the VC itself could have been better mapped and textured, but the gauges work nicely. In the Police version there's a pseudo IR moving map display for searching out the baddies. (a bit odd if you are over the jungle :D )

There is a knee clash with the passenger and the moving map / GPS display. Get rid of the passenger in VC and you gain FPS of course - but you also gain the full use of the gps too.

There is a wonderful texture reversal on the centre console - oops @ Nemeth ;)

So I'll rather let the pictures below say a few thousand words, but my summary is that this is a usable re-compiled model that meets the requirements to be called full FSX, and it's a good price - especially if you get the discount for having the FS9 model. Needs a few things doing with the paintkit, but you can bring this model up to standard with a good paint (I'll be going for some HD Redux type paints here for sure - maybe I can cure the bleary blends in the cabin interiors)

Usable. Reasonably priced.

Thanks so much for spending the time on those Chris. I think I will get it eventually - your excellent repaints are bound to tempt me!! :ernae:

It would appear the Nemeths rushed this one out.

In addition to the problems noted by Dain & Chris the instruments do not display correctly. The altimeter reads 200' high, the standby compass doesnt work as well as the HSI.

Also when they made the EC120 the 1st time they were using gMax, now they are using 3DSMax so it would of been no problem for them to put some edge loops in the VC to ease the transitions IMO.

That said, it is still a beautiful helo & I do enjoy flying it.

i noticed with my aircraft cfgs for the hg and police where extremely messy

i mean there where no spaces or lines between the txt which made it hard to read and add stuff

so ive cleaned them up to look like a normal cfg

ive attached the police and hg cfgs in zips, just replace the messy ones with the clean ones if you want

oh is the panel windows ie shift+xx all messed up too?

ok im loosing interest with this model real quick and nemeth

heres another developer gone quantity over quality

Yes - agreed - last few products have been disappointing. Very sad to see it a happen.

I with Bob, Dain and Chris, they could have spent some more time on it, but I'm happy to have a full FSX version finally. I had the privilege to help beta the last few releases, but heard nothing on this one and seems another beta guy didn't either.
Make sure you guys post your concerns (in an adult way) at their forum

the prop disc is looking off, the outer of the disc is showing when you have clouds as backgrounds it looks like its giving off a 3d shadow around the edge, very off putting

Bob where are you , this thing needs some work with some decent rotor textures

sorry im getting very anal at the moment but im getting annoyed at the rushed number of products

Its a tough call for me and Nemeth. First there are not many making helis so I do not want to see any of them fail. Second, I do not want to see a heli released only every couple years either no matter now great it is or not.
Ive noticed that the first thing alot here talk about with a new release is how great the screenshots it makes, how many repaints they are going to do, leaving how a plane /heli actually flies as a after thought. I am more concerned about its computer performance, stabilty and how it flies.
I was wanting another heli and torn betreen their 500 and this one. Neither one really jumps out at me as having any tlc given to them and I have the feeling the flight models are probably generic.
Being spoiled on the Dodo's flight model, I guess I will go for something that just looks fun. No more impulse, buy anything they release for me anymore.

I disagree with that statement. And no, I'm not singling you out for making it gajit, I suspect a lot of folks feel the same way, I admit even myself.
So please understand my response is a general one to all here, not towards you specifically.

The products themselves are good, in my opinion. They usually rank high on my list of ones I operate day to day in FSX.
Most of my enjoyable flights in FSX involve using one of their helicopter models. And let's face it, for rotorcraft fans our choices are extremely limited in an already niche hobby, such is flight simming.
I appreciate the fact the Nemeths continue to produce helicopters for FSX.

What is disappointing, I agree, is that they have pushed a few of their most recent products out the door "early".
I know in a couple cases to meet some personal deadlines in their own private lives. (Yes folks, freeware and payware developers have their own lives, it's true.)
But also true, you can only really do that a few times before your customer base begins to distrust what were probably in fact, well meant intentions.
Cries of "Quality!" begin to arise. Yes, I'm disappointed in the quality of this one as well.

But like the wise person said, "Point a finger of blame at someone and then look at your own hand and see three fingers pointing back".

I suspect the fan base is partly to blame for these choices we've seen not only by the Nemeths but other developers as well.
It seems more and more folks want to know, "When is it going to be released?" these days and can't wait.
There is ever growing pressure being applied to both freeware and payware developers alike.
I also suspect it's the odd reason some developers, both freeware and payware alike, have recently chose to release exterior models only in advance of the final release.

Also, I know quite a few payware developers just like any other retailers depend on sales this time of year.
It seemed there was a race on by some payware developers after Thanksgiving, that quite a few seemed forced to have dropped out on prior to Christmas.
Apparently choosing quality as being more important to them instead. I applaud them, that is a hard decision to make prior to Christmas, with thoughts of profits from retail sales looming overhead.

This helicopter was officially announced today on the Nemeth site, the day after Christmas.
So in my own opinion, I don't think the intention was to "cash in", but to give helicopter fans something nice for the Holiday.
Something they have been asking for a long time to be done. The FSX version of the Colibri, the "Hummingbird".

Common sense dictates that if you intend to make money, you need to release it farther in advance of Christmas, not on Christmas Eve.
So this leads me to believe good intentions were in fact meant, instead.
Either way, they are already getting all kinds of heat on their forum for this release. I hope it ends positively.

So in the end what did we actually get?
Well, what we got was in fact a nice surprise that ended up being somewhat of an awkward present.
We all get those last minute gifts sometimes, don't we?
No announcement about the development threw us for a loop.
But we finally have a FSX native EC120. That means a lot to me.
Sure, it needs some better textures and a tweak here and there.
But aren't those the reasons that why we all hang out at an Outhouse anyway, "tweakers" all? :icon_lol:

Nope... cycle through the VC views - "A"

GPS in the police model is also operational (without the pax of course - knee in the way - but that is normal in a heli - pax is always in the way)

I am neither condoning nor critiquing. And at a push you can always create additional VC camera views in the aircraft.cfg

PITA? Maybe. But it remains a usable model. We have been spoilt by A2A of course, and Dodo and Cera. Different price categories perhaps?

We have been spoilt by A2A of course, and Dodo and Cera.

I agree Chris, I think that is a factor here as well.
After flying the Cera 412 and Dodo 206, it's hard sometimes to come down a notch. :icon_lol:

As I ranted on and on, I'm still grateful for this release, despite the errors.

Hi Dain - you wont ever offend - I sometimes hate it when people disagree but can nowadays pretend to shoot them down in Rise of Flight :jump:

Nemeth in my opinion are getting a bit complacient. Sure their standards are still miles ahead of some of the dreadful objects unworthy of FSX released by 1 or 2 developers lately but they do seem to miss a lot of basics and do not learn from what they have had to patch on previous models.

If only everything was released as a demo first. I am so fed up of the dare-i-buy-it feeling knowing that refund requests are unlikely to be accepted.

I agree - Im just so glad SOH exists where I can ask straight talking people what they think of something before I part with money. Thank you fellow members :salute:

I must admit I know the feeling about buying any new plane these days. There's always that niggling doubt about quality. There was a time when "Nemeth" did say buy without hesitation, but standards have been raised.

OK, so I raise my own standards and say let's see what the paint will look like when I do "proper" screws and hinge plates/brackets...

Of course - all you'll see in the final will be blurry objects, but then again, I'll know that there's proper-ish screws there...

...and smoother panel lines, bumps etc. And maybe even specs...

I wonder how this will take 4096 textures? As it is I am working on 2048 for now - the wonder of vectors is that I can try 200%ers later.

Well this one is getting beaten up every where I can find a post on it.
How is their low skid 500? Better, worse? Not really much buzz on it either.
I have most of em but not the Cera 412. I had the freebie but cannot find it any more. I am really looking for a smaller, quicker heli than the 412. Before I hit the buy button I want a few opinions on the 500.

here is the fs9 freeware version

as for the 500, i like it, the only thing i could find wrong with it was texture warping but thats at a very small scale and un noticeable if you are making a paint with lines
but overall im happy with the 500

Yeah I had that 120 for FS9 and it was one of my favs especially flying Aerosoft's Manhatten. The high skid fs9 Nemeth port over is still one of my fav helis. Think I might go with their FSX 500. I have always supported Nemeth but like alot of others have taken the wait and see approach before impulse buying. Thanks for the info and link.
