New FSX P-38!

Massive update!!!

Its time to celibate! Hand the ornaments and light the Xmas tree!

A little early in the season, but people who know the P-38 will know the Xmas tree joke! But all kidding aside, it is a time for (at least me) to celibrate! The model is final! Now, its in the hands of the programmers who needs to animate and program in the FM into FSX! Wish them all the best of luck! Im REALLY looking forward to seeing her flying. Its one of the joys I have in modeling, seeing something you create get flown. Im looking forward to all the screenshots!!!!

Again, these are 3D renders with NO advanced shadows or lighting. Im sure it will look even better in FSX!
 
AhhhhhggggG!!! You're killin me here! That looks pretty darned awesome. I thought I knew a little about the P-38, but the Christmas tree joke went over my head!!

The rocket launcher racks are called the Xmas tree, since it resembles an upside-down Christmas tree. Lighting it up means firing. ;)

They always say, if you need to explain a joke, its not funny. :icon_lol:

Hehe. Ok, my excuse is: Bong and McGuire didn't light off no Christmas trees, they were huntin zeros!! :d
 
:medals: Nice job, if the people who get this model do half as good a job as you just did then this will be a epic add-on. I can't wait to see it fly as well.. but with me in it (virtually).:applause: Also thanks for the knowledge guys to what a X-Mas tree is on a P-38.
 
You are correct, of course. Even in the Pacific, they did use those rockets. My interest in the P-38 began, and never really left, the Pacific theater. It's interesting to me that the Lightning saw such sucess sas a fighter in the Pacific, but not so much in Europe. The simple answer is that the German air force, overall, was a bit more of a challenge than the Japanese navy and air force. But there are probably other factors as well.

Either way, your P-38 will fill a gap in FSX that needs filling!

The P-38 was very successful in Europe, but with the 15th Air Force flying out of Italy. When flown out of England with the 8th and 9th Air Forces, the '38 did better in missions requiring lower altitudes such as fighter sweeps and mud moving.

This model gets better every time I look at it!

I must disagree with this. Its not such a simple answer. The P-38 was escorting B-17's to Germany and back before the P-47 or the P-51, and it gave better then it got when it was out-numbered and chained to bomber formations. Also, remember that these were early F and G models. The P-38 really didnt come into its own till at least the J, when it could use the full power of its engines. Also, the pilots had no adequate heating system since it didnt have a V-12 or R-2800 sitting in front of him. Even with all those difficulty's the pilots faced, being in a bigger, heavy twin engine bomber, it still did its job.

The biggest problem with the P-38, was it was designed as a bomber intercepter. The very first D models even had 37MM canon's in them! So it was never designed as a fighter. Yet, bombers only account for about 5% of its airial victory's during WWII. Quite remarkable if you ask me. An aircraft, designed to fight bombers, was turned into the most versitile aircraft of WWII.

I TRULY think that out of ALL the WWII aircraft, the P-38 is the embodyment of the modern fighter. Large, twin engine, multi-roll, and capable of getting any job done, and done well. In fact, its design shares MANY common aspects with 3 of the greatest jets of all time. The F-14, F-15, and Mig-29. Not just the fact that its a twin engine fighter, but of its very root design.

Look at the F-15 cross section between the wings. You see wings, two engines, and a center gondola. The same applies for the P-38, F-14, and Mig's. All you need to do is punch a hole behind the pilots section, and you have a P-38 with jets. The pilot sits in a cender gondola, and the engines are connected by a wing, with twin tails.

I guess Kelly nailed it the first time ;)
 
I agree with everything in that post. The complexity and performance of the P-38 foreshadowed the jet age more than the P-51 or P-47 did. And had it not been for budget considerations, we might have seen P-38s over Korea instead of P-51s…
 
The P-38 pilots I've interviewed have made the same comparisons between the 38 and later jets they flew. They all commented that the 38 flew like a jet.

While I absolutely love the '38....I find it interesting that it's the only major USAAF fighter that the Tuskegee airmen didn't fly....:kilroy:
 
Just wanted to drop a note. The bump map in the renders is EXTREMELY over-exaggerated. The reason for that is simply the way FSX handles bump/normal mapping. It will be very much toned down in-game to were its just a slight bump effect, and not such a deep rivit. Youll see once Colin starts dumping out some in-game renders.

Also, no real ETA on this. Its done "when its done". My job is only half the total effort in putting together one of these aircraft. I totally respect those who program and import these aircraft into the game. Without them, all I have is some pretty screenshots! :ernae:
