I have to admit that i was impressed - especially liked the the movement of the gun cocking handles when theyre being fired, & the damage modelling looked brilliant. - he seemed to have limitless ammo for the amount he was blasting away. & the flames on the burning Albi were also very good.

I'm a bit sceptical as to adjusting the convergence of the guns though, If the guns were broadly spaced, say like in the wings of a hurricane or spitfire, for example (wrong war I know - but you get my drift) ;) then obviously it would be essential, but these guns are 1-2 ft apart, and bounce around when fired - you HAVE to get in close to ensure a kill.

(Maybe its their way of just changing the spread of fire, which we can chose in workshop.) if its not, then you'll be shot down from a lot further away - unrealistic.

My main concerns are same as others.

1. Having to log onto their server in order to play an SP game.
2. The cost of additional aircraft as & when they come out.
3. Starting "best" first, & not at the start of the war

All in all A good flight sim, If they change the having to log onto the server for an SP game, then I'll get it,

It did look very impressive. I'll be glad to try it out if they drop the server connection requirement. I did notice the way the ground detail looked, they could be building a basis for a WWI world environment where you could switch to a FPS shooter in case you're down behind enemy lines and have to fight your way back.

The MP might have raised more interest if they'd started the flyable planes from the beginning of the war instead of the end and thus allowed somebody the chance of running an online war. Because with no proper online war the only thing the game offers is duelling. Pretty, but for most people ultimately pointless and boring. And poor from a marketing standpoint too, because how many people are going to pay money for successively lesser planes? I think they really shot themselves in the foot on that one.

Ditto!

I would love to get excited about it..Really I would...but TWO flyable aircraft?

There will be more at launch.

Fokker D.VII and SPAD XIII with game + Albatros D.Va and Nieuport 28 to upgrade plus an unkown number of more flyable (still undetermined but most likely Camel and DR.I). This Also, they will release new airplanes in modular fashion.....

Also, remember there has been a lot of detail that's gone into each airplane modeling.

Does anybody know the true position re whether there can be offline play of this sim?

Yes:

«Career» mode - generated missions on the basis of the historical data about actions of the aviation in 1917-1918. Users can choose a plane type, a regiment and a date with which they wishes to begin their career

What he's asking is, do you have to be logged on to the RoF site to play, whether it be SP or MP. I have it from a good source that this is the case, I just have to get it corroborated.

I hope not - this may be a form of anti piracy.... and.... ouch...

Why would you have to be logged on to anything to play a single player campaign? The anwer is no. For multiplayer, of course you need to be logged on to a host server.

Hello,
321, as far as i have read you have to log on (be online) to play single with ROF. I would not like that. I would not mind activating, or registering once, or some kind of copy protection (oops did i say that?), even if that means that you will not be able to play anymore if a) the company vanishes/is bought by another company or b) they withdraw their website so you will not be able to activate it after a re-install.
But to be online during single play is a no-go - Gosh i would even prefer this star force protection used with SH3 - oops again, did i really say that ?! As i wrote somewhere else - we shall see ..
Greetings,
Catfish

I see what you are saying. There is a possiblity it may use Steam as DRM. That's the case if you buy a digital download copy I think. However, if you buy the DVD version, I'm pretty sure it'll use the DVD itself as DRM.

It will offer much more than "duelling" I'm afraid and I doubt "for most people ultimately pointless and boring". For you, yes.

It's a different kind of sim than OFF. OFF has a lot of details of the overall war but ROF put in extreme detail to a smaller segment of the war. This they will expand if the simulation is successful like IL2 was.

What I mean by "extreme detail to a smaller segment" is for example this:

Map of the gameworld

"The gameworld is the world of the military Europe of 1917—1918. Historical maps of that time are taken for the bases. Each map has been thoroughly studied and converted into a digital format. The map itself consists of a large number of layers which are combined in a single whole. Everything that you see is a handmade work. We have contacted our French game community who has given to us the information about the battles, tactical operations, front lines and so forth. We used Geo-information systems to create rivers, roads, forests and so forth, after that we have combined everything and adhered to co-ordinates on the game map. It was rather complex because we had to find map of heights which in a consequence we took from NASA satellite, SRTM. There were problems with drawing forests and rivers because this information is practically not accessible. Only NASA satellite photos and historical maps have helped us to create a realistic atmosphere of that time. We managed to restore all topographical data and everything is the same like it was 90 years ago. "

So with the above example, I can safely say that you are incorrect in your statement "the only thing the game offers is duelling".

... all speculation at this point, is it not. "Ooooo" ...... (sigh), the good old days of OFF P-1 & P-2.

Same posts, different game.

LOL!,

312- I think the graphics I've seen so far are stunning; and I would buy RoF:

1- Support flight simming in general
2- WW1 simming specifically

Just interested (no other motive in asking)..since you seem to be the "voice of RoF" on the OFF forum, do you have a vested interest in RoF?
And if not from whence does all the enthusiasm come, since it's not even been released yet. I mean why are you the promoter/explainer for RoF on this forum? Are you with the development team?

Regards,
Royce

I get the impression we are going round and round and round in circles here

Agreed, it's pointless claiming what the game might, or might not have in it right now, because no-one really knows. So there's really little point critcizing it, or defending it right now. All we can hope is that they don't screw it up whatever they're going to do with it, because that will spell more bad news for WWI flight sims.
