P-51D.......

I already have a P-51D,I have the WOP/A2A version(it's a superb flyer and a pig to land...),but I'm looking for repaints to represent two of the firm favorite P-51D's loose on the UK display circuit ATM,namely the ex-Maurice Hammond "Marinell"now owned/flown by Isabel Rutland and also Hangar 11's "Tall In The Saddle,usually flown by Pete Teichman.
Trouble is,no one seems to have done a repaint on the WOP/A2A 'Stang for either aircraft,so I'd be willing to swap the WOP P-51 I have for whichever peeps recommend that has either or both of those schemes on a -51D. Answers on a postcard please.

'Marinell' been done for FSX WOP; you may have to fiddle with textures a bit (over at Avsim)
indeed both 'Marinell' and 'Tall in the Saddle' have been done for A2A / WOP FSX and are available right here at SOH:

Marinell is for Fs9,Tall in the Saddle is for FSX,but I see there's also an Fs9 version.

Only thing is,I've Clicked wolfe's link for Marinell,that takes me to the page but I don't see a "Download" button,am I missing something,
having a senior moment?

OOOOPs,belay that gents,it's a big orange button with "Download" written on it uo to the right................o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

I am not sure if the texture mapping changed between the original WoP FS9 P-51 and the FSX WoP3 P-51 as it's been so many years since I was involved with either one. The quickest way to tell is to look at the file names for the textures. If the names are the same then it would just be a case of converting any DDS files back to BMP files and it might be good to go. If the texture names are different then all bets are off!

Cheers Larry,I'll have a look. I see there's the earlier incantation of G-SIJJ when she was "Jumpin'Jaques",so I've bagged that,Marinell and Moonbeam McSwine too.

I have both of the P-51 versions for FS9. :wavey:
They fly about the same. The standard WoP P-51 package has better representation in terms of repaints.
The A2A WWII Fighters package is a lot more "stand-alone" and has more/more detailed textures (but not by much) but a lot fewer repaints.
It defiantly has different texture mapping, so you can't swap textures from one to the other.
I'm not exactly sure why, but I have a slight preference for the WWII Fighters version. :dizzy:
If you have one version but not both, don't sweat it. They both look and fly great and any differences are buried deep in the code.

If you wind up with both, I found its easy to swap the WoP panel folder over to the WWII Fighters folder. The WoP panel has the full 2D cockpit (or is it the other way around?).

Larry, its cool finding out you worked on that assembly line. :geek:

This is the WWII Fighters version. Besides having to adjust the tail wheel height again, its pretty much the same as the WoP Mustang.

One thing that I have done with both versions is to change the prop blur so it doesn't "strobe" at 3,600 RPM.

Its easy, just add the following line to all of your repaints in the aircraft.cfg file:

texture=diana
prop_anim_ratio=2.43174
kb_checklists=P-51D_check

I started out as a beta tester on their combat flight sim 'Battle of Britain II' when I was still running Windows 2K and spent literally hundreds of hours trying to get the broken multiplayer module to work to no avail :mad:. I then moved on to bigger things when they switched from Shockwave Productions to A2A. I was very involved with the first P-40 for FSX, the first Piper Cub for FSX, the A2A lights package, the early Accu-sim modules and the Accu-feel modules. I also wrote a lot of the user manuals from that time period too and I was also the British Flight Engineer voice actor on the pre Accu-sim B377 Stratocruiser.

I left A2A (on very good terms) as the Accu-sim packages started to get more complex and realistic as I felt my knowledge of complex aircraft systems and performance was no longer on a par with what was required for the manuals. I didn't want to BS my way through stuff I didn't really understand and didn't consider my abilities were good enough any more.

There must be some differences between the WOP and the A2A Mustangs,I've loaded in Marinell,MoonbeamMcSwine and Jumpin Jacques as per usual,i.e respective textures in their folders and update the Aircraft file with the requisite from each of the "read me's" . All three appear but all three are simply white,no texture colour scheme at all. Not sure what the problem is at all.

Double check texture file names, texture format, typos in texture folder names and aircraft texture= entries. Little typos like an l instead of a 1 or a capital I, or a comma instead of a period can make a skin not show up.

I'll have a looksee. Checked. All I can see is that some of the texture files are named slightly differently,i.e,in capital letters but will not be renamed down to lower case. For example,in all 3 repaints there is P-51D1_t,in the original textures there is sw_p51_1_t.

The P-51D1_t cannot be renamed in a lower case fashion.

That looks like the problem. If the model was made to display a texture named "sw_p51_t" it won't recognize one named "P51D1_t" and the fix is to rename the new textures the same as the originals.

I can't help wondering though - if the texture file names are different then the textures must go with different models. Renaming the new texture to match the original will allow the model to display it, but that won't do you any good unless the images on the original and new textures are laid out with exactly the same basic images, i.e., shape and location of the parts, different only in the colors and markings for each skin. That seems rather unlikely unless the models that the textures are meant for were made by the same modeler and meant to wear the same textures - and if that were so, it would seem that the texture file names couldn't be different.

You may find that changing the files names makes the textures show up but not fit the model. You can make the model wear the adapted textures but you can't make them fit.

I've done that in the "Marinell" repaint,no joy it's still the same,all I get is a plain white Mustang without textures. Seems that if things state "WoP" then it'll work,if it's A2A or anything other than WoP then it won't work,especially if it's by "John Tyrrell",then it certainly worn,t work.

This is one of the advantages of using FS Repaint. :wiggle:

What I was trying to tell you guys, same company and roughly the same date but NOT the same texture layout.

The main fuse texture for the WOP P-51:

WOPp51.jpg
Notice you've got the full fuse and both sides of the main wing.

The main fuse texture layout for the A2A WWII Fighters P-51, well half of it anyway:
A2AWWIIFp51.jpg

This doesn't include the alpha layers.

So, see why you can't mix the textures?
The WOP P-51, as I recall, was also set up for CFS. So, you'd want tighter, more efficient textures.
The A2A WWII Fighters P-51 was set up for FS9 and FSX. No dog fighting unless you were doing multiplayer so they could go whole hog on the textures. Aside from the texture assignments, the MDL for both Mustangs looks pretty much identical.

That's why I ended up with Warwick Carter's P-51D... the WoP as unavailable for Sale.

I get it now,so basically I have to remove those three textures and the lines from the air file.Bummer.
Oh well.
Thanks for all your kind assistance and knowledge gents.
What it is,I have an urge to load up the current airworthy Mustangs here in UK and Europe.
I know that we have G-MRLL"Marinell","G-SIJJ "Tall in The Saddle/Jumpin' Jacques",G-MCSW "Moonbeam Mc Swine" and Rolls Royce's G-CMDK/44-73877.
Ex-Uk OFMC 's G-BTCD "Ferocious Frankie" now living in Turkey with the M.S.O Air and Space museum as TC-SMO.

Would a change to the Warwick Carter 'Stang suit my quest better does anyone think?

Hoo-ah,now then!!

So I need Warwick's Stang too,I think I can handle that if I can find it.

Frankie is a lovely aeroplane,a real shame she now lives in Turkey,she gave some great displays in company with OFMC's Spit IX,MH434 with Mark flying Frankie and Ray in the Spit.

Cheers for that Mon Ami.

Miggs.
