Pacific Scenery Issues

Small points for clarification here. The subdued Pacific Blues water texture pack DOES NOT contain any additional textures. The pack is a reworking of the stock water texture bitmaps.

Therefore, Stoney's issue seems to have been some default textures in the wrong format. Otherwise, simply installing the subdued Pacific Blues couldn't have fixed it.

Secondly, Christian Fumey's instructions for G2K scenery is quite explicit. There MUST BE a copy of the texture bitmaps used present in both the CFS2/SCENEDB/scenery/texture & CFS2/Texture folders for the scenery to display correctly. This is especially important for custom textures & lines.

If the texture bitmap filenames are not present in these two locations - the sim displayed those Green/Blue/Brown squares because it can't decide what to use to display properly.

You will note I was careful to state "texture bitmap filenames". They don't have to be the exact same bitmap.

It is this point that allows the development of the reef/lagoon waterclass effects.:mixed-smiley-010:

This also allows you to have light coloured roads in a discrete scenery layer (see my Marshall Islands, or Wake scenery), whilst retaining darker muddy roads for everywhere else, even though they both use the vroadssu.bmp texture...:dizzy:

I've found that I only need the textures in CFS2/SCENEDB/scenery/texture, and don't need to duplicate the textures in CFS2/Texture folder. This appears to be working fine for me, (so far!). Given the quirky nature of CFS2 I don't doubt that each installation of CFS2 can behave quite differently.
 
Black Squares

I have all the best (UT) scenery but I am having just a few spots that appear black. Not a big deal to me, but I was wondering if any one else has this issue. Tried to isolate the problem but no go. This is a shot at Mt. Fuji.

Well, I have checked and recheck UT's and MR scenery readmes and have them installed correctly and didn't make some obvious mistake. All the World/textures were copied into the main CFS2 Texture folder. I tried to find any texture anomalies in other pacific sceneries, (of which there are many) and all seemed to be well there as well. But, I still think the trouble is in the other scenery's area.

Truth is I just don't know and am still trying to find the offender. I was hoping some other forum members might recognize the problem and have resolved the issue at some time in the past and save me trying to reinvent the wheel. I only ask here as I don't know how to proceed.

Hi S,
Great, so you have some fault finding!

If it was a missing tex tile it would show as bright green not black, so it's not that.

Probably one of the new tiles has not been saved in the correct format, and so that's why it does not display, but shows black. What you could do is unpack the same updated scenery/tex packs into a seperate folder, then look at the lists of textures. See what sizes there are (there will be different sets of kb sizes), and see if there is an odd one in the list that is a different kb size to the ones around it, that will be the odd-one-out, you can then resave it to the correct format and replace.

See what you can find....

A few observations based on your screenshot.

The Mount Fuji scenery was by XavierB. Its in Japan. Japan is outside the SWPTO so it uses ###bsu#... landclass texture bitmaps & not the ###hsu# series.

The screenshot shows "light" green tree bitmaps, so probably Pactex, & certainly not the dark FSX style textures created by Dvslats that I prefer.

It looks a little like a blending issue between landclass texture tiles. These are the bitmaps that start 900...su etc.

I would look at these 900 series "b" bitmaps first. If one of these is the wrong format, it might display as pure black?

The cfs2 landclass textures are a strange extended 256 colour format (see Martin Wright's BMP2000).

Does it only show near snowfields (like the top of Mount Fuji in your screenie)?

You don't make things easy, do you!

My assumptions (it would be useful if you confirmed these are correct).

You are using Pactex textures?
You are not using the landclass patches?

What I think the screenshot shows:

The Sea texture square shows a blend of 007h & 001h water textures. This is because the sims stock land & waterclass thinks its water.

I think the landclass patches fix this.

The black squiggly square area in the background is a missing texture. The sims stock landclass is calling for a texture you don't have in your install, & is displaying a black texture instead.

I find it puzzling how you could lose a texture that exists in a stock install, :dizzy: but that's what it looks like to me ...

Or, you have a pactex texture that's in the wrong format, so the sims displaying a black square. Again, I struggle to see where an incorrect format pactex texture might come from, but ...

I am using Pac Tex and no patches that I recall installing. I did re-activate "CFS2 Coast Pacific" by Richard Ludowise and those views, water and black square areas were gone!?. I also reinstalled PacTex 1,2,3, & 4. Everything in the scenery section in 87 Days and Free Flight seems OK now so I'm going to quite while I'm ahead.

Try this for size Steve. There were duplications and a number of layers were out of order. You may encounter conflicts with UT's and MR's versions of the same bases unless you've removed one or the other. Good luck!

New Britain

I was re-reading the UT's instructions for the New Britain scenery, trying to figure out why I get two shore lines at the Dogura airfield. when I may have missed step two: "Step 2. Adding New Mesh
Add the contents of the "NEW_LOD9_MESH" folder to the main CFS2/SCENERY folder. This is a mesh fix provided by Rhumbaflappy to fill large voids in the LOD 8 mesh on Tolokiwa Island."

I could find no folder by that name. Is that right?
 
Dogura

I have two shore lines at PNG_Dogura_UT airfield. I then deactivated every scenery except UT's scenery and then reactivating all the others one by one, hoping to find where the offending item(s) was. But noooo, double shore line remained no matter what I did. I really hate to be a bother again but I love this wonderful scenery. I'm stumped. I did go back and re-read all UT's readme's. Here's at screen shot of what I'm seeing. Thanks.

I believe the way it works is u need to go to SCENEDB then world then scenery and delete all the stock land mesh except north and south and put all of the LOD 5 files into it. The other Lods after that you will need to make a folder yourself for each Lod like one folder Lod7 add it to scenedb then add it by firing up the executable and adding itt by the settings scenery thing then you add the other lods same way.

Make new folders called SCENEDB\Stock Watermasks\scenery or a similar name in the SCENEDB folder. Go to your SCENEDB\world\scenery folder and move all the files named "pac****p.bgl" into the new SCENEDB\Stock Watermasks\scenery folder. Add it to the scenery library after starting the sim and move it down the list to second from the bottom. Don't activate it. This should get rid of your double coastlines.

You will need to activate it for older scenery packages based on stock scenery, e.g. MR Philippines. Good luck!
