Paper or Plastic...

or more correctly, fabric or metal? To take a short break from the Alpha Bobcat (have done so much work on the Bobcat the last few days, the plane was in my dream last night), I am working on a paint template for one of my fave planes...Brian Gladden's Stinson 108-3 Voyager. Doing the advance work, finding profiles/schemes and basic info on the plane, I found that while the plane was originally fabric covered, there is a Type Certification that allows the plane to be skinned in metal. I have found several pics of the Voyager with fully metal skin..wings, fuselage...the whole shebang!

Now here's the crux of this pickle. I can do fabric covered wings and get them to look pretty good. Fabric covered fuselages....not so much. Decent, but not good.

I am half tempted to give the Voyager the metal treatment and avoid the headache of trying to get a decent fabric effect on the fuselage...just checked out my first attempt in sim....and it is far from breath taking.

Plastic it is!

I just did the fuselage up in metal and took a look at it in the sim...and it looks great. Still a lot of detail work to do to the fuselage, but already it is clear that metalizing this plane is the way to go.
