Just aired tonight and ...

Well I don't know about anyone else, but this little thing has turned into somewhat of a flop in my book, compaired to BoB.

Anyone else?
 
I'm tending to agree. It's the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, over and over and over...
 
Please understand, I mean no disrespect to the guys that were there and lived through this. And I guess that's what is so disappointing about this.

I don't think the Marines are getting a fair shake.

Unlike BoB where we followed a particular unit, whether guys went home or not, we were always with the unit. Pacific feels to me to be more of a story line about individual people rather than about the unit.

Thanks to all the guys that lived this. We're indebted to say the least, I'm just apologizing for the Pacific not being a shining star production. (No, I'm not saying I could better, I'm saying it probably could have more closely followed BoB ... )

Well that's because it is. From the outset this was produced as the Pacific campaign through the eyes of three individuals (Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge) whose intertwined stories took them from one end of the Pacific to the other. Read the book It's far better.
 
We gave it up after Part 3.
In fact, the show has been regarded as a real dud as far as most Aussies are concerned.
The target market is where it should have remained.
No offence intended to US Veterans BTW.

This is disapointing to hear because I read the book and it was pretty good. Since I don't have HBO I was going to rent the series but it sounds like I should forget it and save my money.

I must have missed that part during all the pre programing hype. Then if that's the case, the storyline makes some sense now putting it all together, ... but I still can't help but feel that the First Marine is somehow receiving the dirty end of the stick with this, unlike the 101st.

Told ya it was going to stink. It was misshandled from the very start of production. The Marine Corps and the PTO has NEVER gotten it's fair shake! The Marine Corps was never part of the production; that in itself should say enough about the hollywood twinkies and what they know about the Corps......NOTHING! And Dale Dye is a sorry ass excuse for a historian.

This has been a recurring comment on every web forum I visit that makes mention of The Pacific.

Everyone had high hopes for this series too.

I haven't had the chance to watch the new series, but am sorry to hear about the bad reviews. I myself was fearfull that BoB was just too good for anything similar to follow. They set the bar very very high, and I doubt any motion picture or series will come close for awhile to match that....

it would have been better if they'd followed the company instead of the individual people, to me the best way i can find to describe is that when webster gets shot in holland during bob, whilst bob went one to bastonge the pacific would follow him on his trip from the front to the hospital, then to the rehabilitation place where he'd have some blinding romance with some random person :mixedsmi:

For the love of God, don't go to www.pacificfans.com . That forum has got to have the biggest psycho-fanboys I've ever run across on the internet.

And for the record, I too am extremely disappointed in the series. Peleliu (ep. 7) was the only real good one in my opinion.
 
It isn't bad, it's just not as good as BOB.

Hardly surprising, given that on IMDB, after thousands of votes, BOB is voted the best....well....anything of all time.
 
The books that the Pacific is bested on are AWESOME! Sadly the series is no way near the BoB's series. It's ok, but the BoB fire isn't there....
