this is a link to a flikr page from "yubanet" which has some good photos of the "American fire" burning just east of me.right now,7:12am i cant see the neighbors house behind me there is so much smoke laying low on the ground, but soon the wind will shift to whats known as "up-slope" conditions and will clear out soon.at night the winds reverse to "down-slope" and we get nailed with smoke so thick its like london fog,,or what we call "tule fog" ( spoken as tuli fog) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tule_fog ,its intteresting stuff.if you click on through some of the pics, you will come to views of the smoke from the airport at "blue Canyon" ,which is kinda cool for us flight simmers..one shot shows the only "structure" i know of at the airport,,which is a deck, yoou can see it in the distance on the left,on the hillside, when there is a large fire here,CalFire and the USFS use the state fairgrounds near my house for "fire camp" and the blue canyon airport for the helitack base ,and ofcourse grass valley ATB and McClellan ATB for fixed wing.the otherday T43-T44..both P2V Neptues, and one of the BAe-146's (i heard T-40 landing at MCC,but not real sure that was it)were working the fire.

That is going to be a tough one to put out - a lot of steep terrain, and no doubt the underbrush is thick with fuel.

Will keep tabs on this one!

I live in Medford, Oregon.
We have had fires going north of us for over a month now, they are not predicted to be totally out until the middle of October.
Temperatures have been between 85 to 105 degrees for the last two months.
Medford is a valley, it has been filled with smoke for over a month now.

I moved here from Los Angeles to get away from the heat and filthy air. Oregon was supposed to be cool and wet.
Climate change is no joke.

All too true, Rudy. The State of California just released a report last week that concluded "we are in climate change". Not coming, not "psuedo-science" as some would want you to believe, but *here*, and a dramatic rise in annual wild fires is but one reason.

I am looking at retirement in 6 years - British Columbia may be just about right then, maybe like the Santa Cruz mountains are now...

I always pass through McClellan regularly with my camera because you never know just what you might run into. I went by there this past Sunday and got some pics of the action at the air attack reload station. Three Neptunes and a Bae-146 from Neptune Aviation out of Montana, rotating constantly all day long. They would set down for 10 - 15 minutes to reload and then get back in the air, come back about 15 minutes later and do it all over again. Very exciting to witness the whole operation. Note the retardant stains and the old Canadian Armed Forces stripes.

I also tried to get as close to the fire as they would let me yesterday so I could get some pics of the tanker action but couldn't get close enough.

Foo,,,thanks for those shots..ive been sitting here in my rv looking out the window..i can hear the different planes flying past, and see them through the trees, but those are nice pics..thanks..Dave

No problem. Had fun taking them.

You should hear the combination of the P-2's piston and jet engines. It makes the most peculiar sound!

ive heard that while on a fire in the past, accualy was out there past you off rio oso rd in the thermal lands back in the mid 80s,,had a large fire out there..had an S2 knock me for a loop with a direct drop..that fire even saw a B-17 if i remember correctly..

Looks like the Neptunes and BAe-146 are gone. One of the P-2s had it's port jet nacelle replaced yesterday and it left today. There are now two fires raging, with the second one near Oroville. Maybe they moved them closer to the action (Nevada County Air Attack Base)? It was a real treat seeing them, I just wish it was under different circumstances.

There's also been two CA Air Guard C-130J's posted at McClellan the past few days acting as fire fighters. It was cool seeing those too! Notice the retardant dispensing nozzle port side aft.

Last two pics:

great shots Foo..thanks again.listening to them this morning, they are discussing right now as to what the choices are as to fixed wing vs helo's,air attack wants heavy fixed wing, and the IC seems to think all they need are the copters for support.tempers seem to be flaring.the guy in the air attack plane has been in this ranger unit for along time,he was a engine capt(CDF) when i was a fire fighter back in the 80s,and the fire overhead team are from some group based on the coast, and i heard the IC says he has never even been to this part of the Sierra Nevada's before,he has only been in Cali a couple years...

here are some pics on flickr the include many helicopter shots, pretty cool..and there are some night fire shots that are rather pretty..

Sounds like some typical empty suit made the wrong decision again. Should have people in charge who are familiar with the area and experienced.

The smoke here in the valley is bad again, looks like fog. Sometimes its hard to breathe and most people's sinuses are irritated.

Forgot to mention that one of the C-130s had a hydraulic failure the other day while taxiing to take off. The pilot had to taxi on the runway and was on the radio about every thirty seconds giving updates on his position. I guess he was afraid one of the other fire fighters was going to land on him! They were keeping a hectic pace.

wow...i can hear then until they are on the ground, was that the day the USCG C-130 pilot kept saying fire plane emergency?..over and over?

lol...i just heard air attack chase a kingair up and over 9,500 agl to go over the no-fly zone..then the kingair told him he was up there to take pics for some government group...AT says...well fine..but yer stayin up there period...lol.

I really enjoy watching the air attack action but not when they are defending my home!

I just sat down to the computer this afternoon and heard units being dispatched to a vegetation fire not 1/4 mile away from where I was sitting. They dispatched every unit in Placer County I think, they weren't taking any chances. I ran outside and sure enough there was smoke and flames pretty much just down the street. I alerted the rest of the family to be ready to evacuate because there is a propane plant between us and the fire and dry brush everywhere. I then grabbed my scanner and camera and went back outside to see how bad it was getting. I have never seen fire move that quickly before and it looked like things were getting pretty bad. I then heard air attack units responding on the radio from Nevada County. Within just a few minutes an OV-10 and an S-2 were over head. The S-2 made a couple of drops on short order and that apparently brought things under control. The balance of the units were released about twenty minutes later (BIG sigh of relief).

There was a propane train car that caught on fire there at the plant about a year ago. There's nothing like having a police officer wake you from a dead sleep and tell you to run for your life. I don't want to relive that experience again any time soon.

Sorry for hijacking the thread Dave.

Not a hijack Foo,its still placer county and fire, and same planes..lol....T-89 is Joe Satrapa known as "hoser",he is something else...when in training in F7 corsairs (is that correct name number, funny looking jet?)they were in a flight of four, the first three planes went through the target and they all hit it fine ( Joe said they were perfect)Joe completely missed target,so much so he didnt even fire his guns,,,he got upset with himself and as they were to all go around and line back up for a second strafing pass on the target,Joe turned inside of the others, cutting them off,and made an extremely aggressive run on the target and so thoroughly destroyed it(he "hosed" it) the other three had nothing to shoot at !!!!!..there is another story about him on an aircraft carrier and he was heading into the ready room(?)(where the pilots go just before a mission to preflight ect),well Joe ,its said, was one of those who claimed he wasnt afraid to get shotdown..but if he were to be shot down,he was damned sure going to be ready,so he had two hand guns, pistols i believe, and pockets full of hand grenades, well ole hoser wobbles into the readyroom late as usual ,stumbles over a chair or something ,cigarette in one hand and a hand grenade falls out of his pocket and rolls under the chairs.the room cleared of pilots in nano-seconds and hoser stood there, smoke hanging from his lip and mumbled....whut?...where ya goin?..

also when at the nevada county airports open house,he will do a demonstration with T-89 and when he lands,he does a short field landing using full beta reverse, and he is then able to turn off the runway on to a taxiway at airshow center..its a slight up hill...he then uses the breaks and throttles to make the nose of t-89 "Bow" and then wave.....it doesnt just bounce up and down..any one could do that, the announcer with say..ok now the airtanker is going to bow to you ,and it does a bow..and he brings the nose back up with out any shock movement..then the announcer says..ok wave at the tanker and show him your respect..the crowd waves and cheers and hoser makes the plane wave on the ground....its something to see.

and Foo,Do or did you know a guy named Joey Ferrara?..we built a house for him at the corner of 9th and J st,right across from the propane farm, the spur track points right at the house there..... think hes back in newcastle, but he and his wife were there for a long time.
