Puss Moth Released!

If anyone has good rigging detail for the skis, I would consider providing such an alternative model.
 
Okay, I think I have the exterior modeling done and textured; now to copy those parts to the Interior VC model.
 
Curious Milton... are the skis in the model limited in travel (nose up/down)?

The Moth above has an early experiment in skis...
The rigging is four wires per ski. A spring-loaded bounce and rebound wire at each end to give a bit of 'suspension damping' and to maintain a 'default' slightly nose-up angle of attack; and a non-sprung 'limit' wire to control how far the tip and tail can be deflected.

More modern ones (still pre-war) seem to have mostly eliminated the rear 'sprung' wire as unnecessary. Also,while some early ones used springs, there seeed to be a preponderance of bungee cord systems, but the pic looks like the Moth had springs. I did find a picture of a modern rigging kit .

As for the mounting bracket, it appears to be a pyramidal piece of sheet steel (maybe with an I-girder outer frame) welded to a flat base (which would be through-bolted to the skis) and a through-bushing to fit the normal wheel axle. This is pretty typical of light aircraft design. Hard to tell from that pic but often the early skis were laminated wood.

I'll try to find the source I have in a book here.

Not by the animation you see; the rigging simply follows the gear animation.

I asked ahead of time for information and none showed.

If you have more detail that I could ascertain from the one picture above, I will try to follow any practical guidance to update the model and animations.

Meanwhile try what I have; you will see that a nose-up on the ski is the prevalent attitude. Note that the forward rigging stays taut while the rear rigging usually carries a bit of slack.

As to the 4 wires per, as I have no knowledge of how that rigging worked, I would be hard pressed to animate it ... even if i did know. :)
 
Yes sir ... I have been crusiing the SW Alaska areas, getting plenty of snow there. Started out in Homer and went exploring. The Skis seem to work well on that ice and snow. :wiggle:

Well, thank you .. I enjoyed doing this one. It is my first aircraft with skis. Took a lot longer and more parts then I expected, but I am happy with the results.

Milton thanks for the comment about long-range tanks, this is a lot easier than pumping it over out of the jerrycans ;)

Thank you, Milton! Been having lots of fun with this ski version.

I've been scootin' through the "winter" snow up in the Port Alsworth, AK area and across the lake at my own Kijik Lake scenery. I tried a handful of snow/ski effects and came down to my two favorites for the Puss Moth. The effect from the LIC Scout (usually my favorite), LICScout_Snow, and the default fx_tchsnw effect. For the Puss Moth, I finally settled for the default effect. It just seemed to fit the old girl... at least to my eye.

Thanks; I appreciate that too. I was hoping someone would share what effect works best. I knew I could count on you sir, as always. :)

EDIT: I do not find taht effect in either my FS9 or FSX effects folder. Are you sure that is a default FX?
