Puss Moth Released!

Coupla thoughts on the ski version.

I don't think fx_tchsnw is a default effect. David and I used it in the ski version of our Gee Bee Model A, and I recall that it took some finding, and we had to credit the author. Anyway, it's a good one, and if anyone doesn't have it, you can get it with our Gee Bee Model A.

It fits into the Effects section of the Aircraft,cfg file like this:
dirt=fx_tchsnw

To complete the package you should also have a snow sound effect to simulate the sound of skis sliding on snow. This means having a separate sound set for the ski version. Milton packaged the ski version with a complete sound set, but I think it's the same one as the wheeled version has. Don't be tempted to combine the versions into a single aircraft folder, or to alias the sounds to the wheeled version. Instead, get the ski sound and edit the sound.cfg file.

The ski sound has the file name "ski" and I don't think it's a stock sound. I forget where we found it, but you can get it from our Gee Bee Model A. Put a copy into the sound folder, then edit the sound.cfg file like so:

Go to each of the [GROUNDROLL] sections (there are six of them) and edit the first line to look like this:

[GROUND_ROLL]
filename=ski

Then your ski plane will not only look like it's sliding on snow, it will sound like it too.

Thanks Mick ... great additions to consider.

At one time back in FS2000 and FS2002, I had many ski and float planes with these types of effects and sounds. Today I have none and did not want to package anything from other authors. I knew that great info like this would come from the folks here and that is the way I like it. The more we use the forums to help with these kinds of improvements, the better community we make. I really appreciate your contributions and those from dogknot and others who will likely chime in to improve this basic model packaging. :applause:

You are absolutely right, Mick. It's not a default effect and I was in error for sure. As soon as I read your post I had a vague recollection of getting this effect eons ago. A quick search brought it all back to memory.
Thanks too for the source, and resource, for the ski sounds. I'm off to add them into the ski version of the Puss Moth.

The original effect(s) was done by Chris Willis of the FSW Group and in it was a new dirt effect. With permission, Rip Lichliter altered the effect to snow and uploaded it for all of us to play with.

The original fs2002 file by Chris and the FSW group is named fxpack1.zip and is available at flightsim.

The altered "snow" version by Rip is named snowdust.zip and is also available at flightsim's library.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the plane in all forms. The tips on the snow effect and ski sound worked perfectly. I suggest users also add Nickspropdust to the lighting section which gives you blowing snow kicked up by the prop.

Thanks Brent. :ernae:

When I posted last night it was very late, past my bedtime, and I was too tired to dig out the backup copy of the Model A and look through the ReadMe to find the source of those files.

Also, I figured that folks who go for planes like the DH.80A might already have the Gee Bee, and have those effects in their Effects folder.

I didn't have to look for the .cfg edits; I just copied them from my installed Model A while I was installing my ski Puss Moth. Even though I was up after my bedtime, I couldn't resist getting that done.

EditVoicepack_add on

For EditVoicepack users, here is the vcpmod file that allows ATC/and pilot to identify the aircraft as "Puss Moth".

DeHavilland is a default name, but must be one word for the sim to recognize it.
Non EVP users will at least have ATC referencing with "DeHavilland".

[General]
atc_type=DeHavilland
atc_model=DH80

save to your computer and drop the dot text part of the filename

great repaints Damian!

gotta finetune the detail on the japanese license-built DH80, Manchukuo registration. hard to get specs on the letttering, so i am guessing...
