Rami's mission & scenery thread

Good evening,

Here are another couple of missions that are finished...but two of the three are only partially historical.

"title_string"=Dodecanese campaign - Troubles at Gadvhos Island
"summary_string"=Besatzungen, aufgepasst! Two British convoys are pushing their way westward along the south coast of Crete, and will pass through the narrow waters just north of Gadvhos Island. We will join up with Ju-88s from Sicily and make a simultaneous strike on both convoys to overwhelm any fighter defense! Passen Sie auf sich auf!
"objective_string"=This mission is an amalgam of several small strikes within a four-day period from 21-24 March, 1941. During the four days, convoy AN-21, heading from Alexandria to Pirarus, passed through this narrow Channel between Crete and Gadvhos Island, while the Malta-bound convoy MW-6 passed through the area the next day at about the same time, turning southwest right between Gadvhos and Gavdopoula. During that period they were attacked by several small flights of German Ju-88s, as well as He-111 torpedo bombers.
"intelligence_string"=Following takeoff, fly toward the western end of Crete. These two convoys should be heading west just off of the coast near Gadvhos Island, located directly south of Souda Bay. You will be attacking the convoy closest to the island, while the Ju-88s will dive-bomb the merchant convoy close to Crete. This Malta-bound convoy is heavily defended with cruisers, along with the carrier HMS Formidable. Your job is to get hits on either the carrier or one of the British cruisers, hopefully sending at least one ship to the bottom! Hals und Beinbruch!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Heinkel He-111h-6
"airfield_string"=Rhodes - Calato

"title_string"=Dodecanese campaign - Evening over Kythrea Strait
"summary_string"=Männer der Luftflotte! A Piraeus-bound convoy is about to round Crete & will be passing through the Kythera Strait in a couple of hours. You are being sent out to assault the convoy before it can reach the safety of the Aegean Sea! Get in, get your hits on the convoy, and get back to Sicily in one piece!
"objective_string"=On 3 April 1941, British convoy ANF-24 was in the process of moving through the Kythera Strait when nine Ju-88s from Sicily attacked the convoy. Two merchants were sunk; the Northern Prince and the Cyprian Prince. The former merchant was carrying several thousand tons of explosives, which ignited after the fires started by the bombing couldn't be contained.
"intelligence_string"=After getting airborne, reduce your engine power to slow cruise settings to converse fuel. However, Kythera Strait is much further to the north & west than previous assaults far to the east of Crete, so fuel consumption isn't as much of priority. Earlier raids indicated that the convoy is only guarded by two destroyers, so attack these merchants without hesitation. If needed, you should have the fuel to make another pass. Score hits on these merchants, avoid the flak, and get back to Sicily in one piece!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Junkers Ju-88a-4 (Italian)
"airfield_string"=Sicily - Gerbini

"title_string"=Dodecanese campaign - Schnellbomber range testing
"summary_string"=Guten Tag, meine Herren! Today, we will head out to attack a Egypt-bound convoy which is presently rounding Crete. We hope to catch it in the narrow channel near Gadvhos Island, and send as many of the ships to the bottom as we can! Reconnaissance work by other Ju-88s indicate that this convoy is lightly defended, so get in, get hits, and return to Sicily! Viel Erfolg!
"objective_string"=On 2 April 1941, British convoys ASF-22 & AS-22, made up of nine empty merchants and seven empty troop ships, passed through the Kythera Strait and by early evening was moving just north of Gadvhos Island. At that point it came under a heavy assault by six dive-bombing Ju-88s, which paralyzed both the Homefield & the Koulouros Xenos. This mission is a representation of that attack, combined with several smaller raids on this convoy that happened earlier in the day & on similar convoys during this period.
"intelligence_string"=After getting airborne, reduce your engine power to slow cruise settings for the lengthy flight from Sicily to the convoy. This convoy is steaming east, but is within range of Malemes, so British fighter cover is a possibility. Earlier attacks revealed one cruiser & two destroyers guarding the convoy, so you should be able to bomb accurately & use your speed to clear any anti-aircraft fire. Make sure to keep an eye on your fuel, if this mission uses less fuel than anticipated, we may try raiding convoys even further east!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Junkers Ju-88a-4 (Italian)
"airfield_string"=Sicily - Gerbini

Hey fellas,

The Dodecanese campaign is now up to sixteen missions...I have packages if anyone wants to have a gander at them.

Progress report, and a thank you...

Good morning,

I want to first say thank you to Kdriver and Nik112 in the Balkans for their work beta-testing missions for the Royal Air Force and the Dodecanese campaigns. So far, there are twenty-three missions for the Royal Air Force effort against the Luftwaffe, as well as a total of sixteen missions in the Dodecanese. I also have three Italian missions done, together with the first campaign of 35 missions for the Royal Air Force against the Regia Aeronautica already in the library.

The other major piece is underway...the German effort against the Greeks and the Royal Air Force. Because I have already updated the "Hellas" campaign, I am using that campaign as a base for the bomber and fighter campaigns, while also using the 23 missions I already have for the RAF to make the German missions for both bombers and fighters. The missions now, instead of "loosely" following ZG 26, now play much closer to the historical vest. These older missions will also be inter-spliced with new missions against the Greeks and the British not covered by the other campaigns.

I hope to have this done by the end of the year...and I'll keep sending missions to my testers.

For my Balkans beta testers...

Good afternoon,

While the next mission is "The Battle of Athens" for both bombers and fighters, for the attack on Eleusis earlier in the afternoon I wanted to be able to spawn two flights of Hurricanes to take off from Eleusis at the same time, since there are two runways. So, I was able to make an airbase.dat entry for the dirt runway at Eleusis.

To differentiate between the two, I used (C) for the concrete runway, and (D) for the dirt runway. I will update the MTO Master airbase.dat file accordingly.

[runway.xxx]
id=8423
name=Greece - Eleusis (D)

landing_stop_pos=50,0
; NDB 639

[runway.xxx]
id=8425
name=Greece - Eleusis (C)
base_lat=N38 04.06
base_lon=E23 29.84
base_alt=300
heading=180
allegiance=0
units_across=2
takeoff_start_pos=10,0
takeoff_stop_pos=1600,100
landing_start_pos=3000,350

I will speak with Achim about adding this to the JHS_Greece package.

Dumb question: Are these new airstrips that can be added directly to the airbases.dat file or should we wait for Achim's response?

Shadow Wolf 07,

Technically, the runways aren't "new." The concrete runway was already there, it's the runway you take off from in free flight, and the airbase.dat entry that came with the package. However, if you look at Eleusis, there is also a secondary dirt runway, and I created the airbase.dat entry for the dirt runway so I could use it in Mission Builder.

There's no harm in adding it...but I would never add that second entry to his airfield package without his permission.

No Queen Elizabeth class that I know of Rami, but I will dig in my archives to see what is closest.

I could use some research help...

Hey guys,

The German bomber and fighter campaign is going well, but in another thread, ElsnerMarkus requested a mission to be included, specifically the attack by Bf-109s on Salamis on 21 April, 1941 by thirty-six Bf-109 "jabos" flying from Larissa. Apparently this strike did a great deal of damage; the Greek Dreadnought Lemnos was beached, and the Kilkis was sunk, along with several other ships.

I believe Salamis was the military port, while Piraeus was the civilian one. If anyone could provide me with some recon photos of where the harbor facilities were, and what they looked like, it would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Amazing!

Kevin,

I always wonder how do you manage to find precise WWII info, and great pictures to boot, each time anyone needs them! :applause: :applause: :applause:

Cheers!

Stefano,

He keeps them all in an underground vault near Alice Springs where no one would think to look. :icon_eek:

Kevin and others,

based on the picture, I took a crack at it...but am still in the mood to tweak it if anyone has any suggestions.

By the way...the white pier is a breakwater from Bruno's Malta set, and the other "what's that" item is the floating drydock by Psullykeys.

It's looking good Andrew. :applause:

The question is will Sander's new accurate coastlines either drown or leave your scenery high and dry. Your rendition of Narvik is totally waterlogged with his new Norway scenery. I suppose it all depends on how soon he releases his new package.

News from the Balkan theatre of operations...

Good morning my friends,

I wanted to pass along that the project in the Balkans continues to progress. I am now getting into the Cretan campaign, about to start missions for 11 May. Thus far for the Germans, there are a total of eighteen missions for bombers and seventeen missions for fighters, in two separate campaigns. The bomber campaign will feature Ju-87s and Do-17s, but the majority of your missions will be flown in the Ju-88 Schnellbomber.

(Achim, you told me once that we didn't have enough missions for the Ju-88, so I kept you in mind on this one!)

The fighter campaign will feature Bf-109s and Bf-110s. While some missions are duplicated, (flown from the perspective of a bomber pilot and a fighter pilot) most missions are totally separate, to give you the different operational goals of each group. The fighter campaign will be primarily geared toward gaining air superiority, where the bomber campaign will focus on destroying the Greek industrial and transportation networks, and later focus on the evacuation of the British.

Because I'm already well into Crete, I'll focus on finishing up these two campaigns, plus the Dodecanese, which stands at seventeen missions. However, at this point, (early May) Italian contributions are minimal, at best. That campaign may draw to a close, unless I use the missions of 4/KG 26, which I am considering to expand the campaign to twenty missions or so.

After that, I'll finish the British side.

Sounding good Rami - looking forward to this one. I had an uncle who was in the NZ army in Crete - got off by the skin of his teeth.....
