REX is released!

First of all, it's not FEX, it's "REX" in my screen. Yago's following shots are "FEX" and by Gawd, I like them, I may have to look into that as well and pit it against REX. Oh well, another paycheck on the 15th. :friday:

Caz
Yago's shots are REX.

All the better for me purchasing REX then timest. I though, if FEX is that good, I'll have to look into it! :friday:Oh well, thanks, I am loving REX.

So far, I have only loaded two themes, one was an active weather theme whehn I first got REX. Took forever to load, but I liked it. Next time I loaded the REX REALITY Theme and have left it there since and use Active Sky 6.5 to control my METARs or make my own advanced weather using the REX REALITY textures loaded. This way I do not have to wait forever for the REX textures to load and I do not have to fragment my computer everytime I load an REX theme. FSX on my system just does not perform unless it's on a fresh Defrag, system shutdown, and restart. I like the AusLogics Defrag 1.4 for quick defragging, For full defragging, I use payware O & O 11.0 64-bit and start it at bedtime (takes forever, but does a complete job). FSX also does not like changing lots of stuff in flight or making flight after flight. Set a flight plan and stick to it, FSX likes that, does that not sound just like Microsoft! :costumes:

I couldn't agree more, every freeze or lockup I've ever had with FSX I can attribute to doing just that. Moving around inside the cockpit or jumping outside and moving around is no problem for me, once I start making changes from the toolbar it's a crapshoot. Never understood why so I just avoid doing that.

coming around...but the water is still too reflective and it is unclear which slider in REX is responsible in the "Ocean Textures" setting....

I'm trying to use the FS Water Configurator freeware program to make the adjustments...hmmmmm the clouds are more detailed but less misty and there's something too crisp about them...but I am getting good frame rates and the water can be made somewhat smoother and less out of scale WRT the surface chop.

I like the lighting effects and the way REX reduces the A2A shockwave halo overkill...

I don't know heywooood, I think you just sold REX to a few more customers with those shots......I like ummm!

haha yeah...I guess it was a little too soon to talk about shelving it.

Most of my frustration had to do with the initial setup bug where it was not generating the initial backup folder.

Then the weather generator bug and error message made it seem like it just wasn't ready for release.

In addition - it wasnt clear to me from the outset whether you were to run FSX from inside the REX program (which you can do with the weather generator running) or as it turns out you can also do - to simply use REX to create and or modify the flightsims textures, then load them into FSX, then close REX and then run FSX. :kilroy:

I was confused - which is normal.

Now that I have had a chance to take a breath and play around with REX and then go back to the manual it is making more sense...

I'm still not sure I like all of the things REX offers but since you can select which textures to address and which to leave 'unchecked' then it just becomes a more lengthy matter of trials and experimentation.

I agree with Limjack, I too think the environment in those shots Heywood is excellent, I especially like the looks of the last screenshot.

REX clearing over Fresno

This shows the Aerosoft F-16 working through the clouds as the storm clears over the Sacramento valley. This pilot is working his way down to land at his base near Fresno.

Some very nice shots there. How do i get those lovely cloud formations?
I have been trying for two days now and all i seem to get is small puffy clouds very much dispersed looking.I have tried many different themes, the weather engine,no weather engine, etc.:isadizzy:Mind you,a lot of the time i dont get those green message bars which i believe means that i havnt connected to REX properly.

How is the ground fog? Does it shake like Jello still? :costumes: It's funny but nerve racking...

What I did was...

Open FSX and load a 'free flight' set your plane, airport, time of day etc...then save it as the default flight - call it 'REX settings check flight' or somesuch...then exit FSX.

Open REX and here you can either select the weather engine - or as I did - go to 'Theme Creation' and then go one by one through the themes on that page - select your sky and save - select your clouds and save - select your water, your lightning your ground textures etc and save each time...

then save the overall settings when you have made all the adjustments.
REX will ask you to name this overall setting at this point

Now 'Install' them into FSX (the green button)
This takes a few minutes and your screen might flicker and you might get a large black square on the monitor...this is normal I guess so just let it continue to load - it will eventually complete.

Now close REX as you do not need it open while running FSX because all the textures are now loaded.

Open FSX which will preload your saved free flight for trials - I used KORS Orcas Isle because thats the airport location I use for all my addon and settings tests.

You should have the weather theme and all other textures in place and visible now.

If you are using the live weather - you still need to select all your other textures and settings but then you would select the real weather option at REX startup and then press the 'fly now' button in REX - in this case you ARE running FSX within REX....

This also takes time in the loading phase and you probably want to wait on the ground once FSX starts up because the green banners dont show up right away - I started flying the first time I got the weather engine to work but I didnt realise it was working - I was in clear weather just after departure when the sim froze...banner one came up...then banner two...with messages I cant recall and then wham - I was in a very thick haze with some lightning in the distance.

After I create a theme I load it but I dont use their weather engine...i use FX advanced custom weather..works just fine for me..Still looking for the perfect clouds water and waves combination...Ok, last shot for me.:icon31:

I had held off buying FEX until REX was released, and see what others had to say in their reviews about which one was "better". After looking at all the screenies and comments, I'm still not sure which way to go... :isadizzy::banghead: Looking at pretty screenshots is one thing, but the proof is really in actually flying in the environment. I wish I could afford both! I think I'll wait for awhile and look at some more feedback and then decide. One of them is going to be my Christmas present along with some new aircraft. Thanks for the comments y'all... :mixedsmi:

I have both and think I will go back to FEX. REX is just to darn complicated. Every time you try to change something it takes 5-6 minutes to load. Damn weather freezes your screen right after takeoff. I mean, we just spent five minutes loading the program. Couldn't it have also loaded the weather? When I takeoff I want to FLY not load weather two minutes later.

Then I can't get the local water to look right. It is this awful green. I tried to change it to brown but the brown won't show.

All in all, I am with Bruce. Figure I wasted $45 bucks. I do like the airport textures and the clouds. Maybe there is a way to keep them? Too bad they didn't do a better job on making it work easily. Fancy razzle dazzle is nice...if it works.

jmig - I thought the same thing about the water textures - it didnt seem like they were adjustable - but they are.

you have to use the sliders to make the tint and contrast and algae adjustments when you clivk on the inland water or ocean water textures - move the sliders one at a time to the extreme right - then wait...then you see there is a lag but the right hand comparison window does change..then you just make your adjustments then SAVE - you must save each of your adjusted textures one at a time AND when you have made all of your adjustments - you must ALSO save the theme.

This works

But I agree with you about the weather engine loading lag...not too good.

Heywoood,
Thankyou for the explanation and i think the case maybe solved:icon_lol:.I have just had a daytime and then a dawn",flight out of Launcheston in "FTX" scenery addon with my new Carenado Mentor and they looked fantastic.I had to still make a few alterations in the FSX weather and it can take quite sometime for the "Green REX bars" to kick in.
Thanks again mate:applause::ernae:
