Yes, I DID have monstrous headwinds over the Sierras! At one point, they were steady at ---get this--- 129 knots on the nose! Yes, you read right, that's ONE HUNDRED TWENTY NINE KNOTS! I dropped down to 16,500 feet after I was clear of the undercast and the headwinds there were ***only*** 80 knots! I was thinking, "Sheesh! What does a guy have to do to get a break around here?"
Other than that, my ol' "tiggerkitty" was purring along like usual, and it ended up being an enjoyable flight.
As I said before, "The circle is now closed." Take a look....

I've headed back from Phoenix to the UK. No chance of getting a B744 into my local airfield, so I've landed at Manchester (EGCC). From here it's a short hop in the C-47 over the Pennine hills to Sheffield (EGSY).

Not the great circle route. Instead I went looking for the 200 knot jetstream. The best I found was about 115 knots.

(flight included a 14 hour "pause" over the Atlantic - I had to go to work!)

Last hop to get me back from Manchester to Sheffield. I was going to fly a C-47 today, but I've changed my mind. Instead, I'll fly a B-17 into Sheffield tomorrow.

On 22 February 1944 a B-17, Mi amigo, crashed into Endcliffe Park (which is a couple of miles from where I live) in Sheffield while returning from a bombing mission. Tomorrow, there's a joint USAF / RAF fly-by over the park, to mark the 75th anniversary, and to thank a guy who was in the park and saw it crash. He's been tending the memorial to the 10 crewmen ever since. It's quite a story.

You are, indeed, right, Martin. It IS quite a story. Right now, words fail me.
As an aside, I'm also going to be flying home from Oakland, although my trip is a lot shorter than yours!
Then from there, I am going to go ahead with that "something else I'm planning" that I talked about over in the "2019 RTW Race Official Announcement" thread.
Maybe that'll explain a few things about where my mind was during the Race.
I am trying to figure out the best way to go about it, and I may at some point ask for advice about how to conduct that "something else."

It's always good flying with you all.

Thank you,

"Ponch"

P.S.
Who does a fairly decent rendition of a Cessna 152 pay OR free?

Now that I'm back "Home," I'll explain about what I alluded to in some of my earlier posts.

Ohhh, Kaaayyy...

My Wife's brother, the family comedian, all-around good guy, and one heckuva pilot, passed away unexpectedly just before Christmas. Needless to say, it hit all of us pretty hard. To help myself get through it, I have been flying in FS9 and FSX, and remembering just how passionate he really was about flying.

How passionate, you ask? My wife has always said that for as long as she can remember, he literally would have dreams about flying and not want to wake up. Not too long after he graduated high school, his dad bought a ranch in British Columbia, and "BrotherBrad," as we called him, would split his time between NorCal and BC. To that end, he saved up and bought a Cessna 152, which he affectionately called his "Li'l Tonka Plane," and with his little brother, built an airstrip at the ranch in BC. He flew back and forth often until his dad passed.

I know it meant a lot to him, because he kept a VFR wall planning chart with three lines drawn on it in ink: one from our Home airport O08 to KHIO, another from KHIO to the ranch airstrip, and a third one from O08 direct to the ranch.

He put that chart up on the wall near his desk in every place he ever lived.

In his later years, he and his friends would fly to the Sierras in his friend's Cessna 206 for what are now known as Legendary fishing trips.

To that end, I am planning a memorial flight. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join.
Here is what I have so far:
The order of the day is... loose and informal. Let's have fun!
Fly from O08 Colusa County to KHIO Hillsboro to CYDC Princeton, BC, the closest airport to the ranch. (Building and uploading the ranch airstrip would be a bit beyond my scope.)
Fly any single engine Cessna from a 152 up to a 207.
Screenies would be nice!

When the weather and my work schedule improve, more will be forthcoming.

'Till then...
