Scenery/infrastructure auto package installers?

Also, Morton,

BTW: For some reason the forum isn't allowing me to edit my posts at the moment. When I click on "edit post" all I get is a blank, virgin window to type in. No biggie. It seems to happen from time to time.

MR

Yes, I just wondered about the same thing..

Thanks for info though.

Hi Morton,

Completely off topic, but could you tell me whether you have an active page with all you wonderful repaints available?

Thanks,

Mike

I just want to comment on the PTO install guide by Rami.
In the guide is says:

1) Go to your Scenedb\World\Scenery folder.

2)
Delete all the .bgl files except these two files: north.bgl and south.bgl.
Take all of the .bgl files from the four LOD5 packs and place them inside your scenedb\world\scenery folder.

3) The next step is to install Rhumpaflappy’s new water masking files.

However, Rami's advice is to skip Rhumba's watermasks so in this case this is wrong. So What should be deleted? All the cst4xxxx files or the pac4xxxx files or what? The guide says also "There are no flattens needed for Rhumba's new water masks". When not using them it sounds as we still need some? Is it the stock watermasks?

Morton,

1) Woah, let's pump the brakes here, my dear friend.

2) Technically, I didn't write this, I signed off on Dvslats modifying my ETO version, and this was before we really discovered all the issues with Rhumba's new watermasks, as well as UncleTgt's newer scenery packages, and MaskRider reworking some of his older ones to fit the new watermasks.

Perhaps I should get around to writing another one soon, but with four kids approaching their teenage years, being in grad school, having a mother go through a kidney transplant, and my own upheaval having to fly out to Minnesota for surgeries a few times a year, extra time is hard to come by.

1) So let's look at this logically. All of my campaigns and missions in the Pacific are designed to work off of the stock coastlines and shorelines in the Pacific, which means that you do not follow the "remove everything except "North.bgl and South.bgl" step. However, you will put in the LOD 5, 7, and 8 layers.

With the #1 option, all of MaskRider's airfield sets (expect for the ones explicitly highlighted in #2) will work, as well as all others in the scenery library for the Pacific, along with these following scenery packages by UncleTgt...

Aleutians UT: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=3805 (Note, this works with #1 and #2)

Andaman & Nicobar UT: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=2184

Carolines UT: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=13451

New Britain UT: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=16698

New Ireland UT: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=17782

2) If you want to do a "modern" CFS2 Pacific install with the newest scenery, then you do want to follow the "north and south.bgl" step, because you will replace the stock coastlines and land class. However, except for the places where new scenery is specifically designed, you will lose the beaches, and airfields outside of these new scenery areas (including some stock airfields not covered by gavinc) won't work properly.

The only scenery packages specifically designed for the #2 option are as follows...

2019 DEI package: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=25248

2019 Gilbert islands: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=25225

Sakishima Gunto: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=20902

Gavinc stock airfields: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=5572

My modifications of the work of Gavinc and Dog1: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=24360

Hopefully this will help to clear things up a bit. :encouragement:

Backups ...

Morton,

Not sure if this helps at all, but I installed a "stock" version of CFS2. I then copied the folder to the same location (C: drive) and labeled it "CFS2 Default" so as to have a "fresh" install all the time as a backup. I didn't even put the "no-cd" patch in that one. The only change I did was to label the executable the same as the folder. That way if I messed something up with another version I was trying to install I could just copy the files from that particular default version over to the one I was messing with. It's what I've done to mess with a pre-war Pacific setup I'm trying to put together.

My hard drive now looks like this: "C:\CFS2_PTO" for the one I'm messing with, and "C:\CFS2_Original" for the "backup" installation.

I also don't have anything installed in default locations either.

I should mention I have a LOAD of hard drive space, so I'm not sure if that would be an option for you just to have some backups of the stock files. I just thought to put it out since I found this "trick" on the forum somewhere.

Good Luck! :encouragement:

That is very cool Morton. I had never heard of Google/Box or Drive/Google. Very neat.

Thanks Rami for your time. Sorry I make all this fuss about something I'm sure has been discussed several times.

Jorge, yes this is the way I have orgenized my PTO, ETO and Korea installs too. I just wanted to restart with some fresh installs since they have been "sleeping" for some years.

Kdriver, Thanks. I'll bookmark that thread for later use.

Morton,

It's kind of ironically funny to me that the ETO setup in some ways is now the least complicated theatre of operations to set up the scenery. :wiggle:

CFS2 and SOH has come a long way. For many years the thrill for me and I guess a lot of others was the steadily development of all the missing AC and then giving them better texture/panels. It came to a point for me when there were no more things to do. Now we have several versions of all the AC we need. And with countless number of textures.

So after a couple of years I figured I should dig my CFS2 up again and try to fly the CFS2 the way I never had the time to.. the campaigns..
That's the background for these questions.

For this I understand now the essential thing is.. I'll keep it simple and keep the CFS2 stock coast/shore-masks and use only the compatible bases. The newer fancier scenery stuff will have to wait..

Thanks guys.

Ok.. all PTO installed. Looks pretty good :adoration:. Only thing is some lines running over land and water. Any ideas?

If I remember correctly there are places around the default PTO where roads run through the water. I am guessing that those are road textures.

MR

PS They can be got rid of with a G2K exclude.bgl

There also some missing terrain around Port Moresby. I guess finding the reasons for such anomalies can be the needle in the haystack, so I dont expect anyone to tell me exactly what's wrong. But I Just want to mention it.. just in case

Blank texture squares means the game is not finding the texture bitmaps. Copy the bitmaps in your SCENEDB/world/texture folder and paste into the CFS2/TEXTURE folder and the issue should be resolved.

Thanks man!
So it's doesn't matter if all these SCENEDB/world/texture bitmaps (Pactex..etc ) are duplicated in the CFS2/Texture folder?
