I've had car and truck traffic in real world flying, pass me doing T&Gs in a Champ. Window slid back. Loud. FUN airplane.

I just flew between two airports in the sim that I've driven between IRL. It seriously took less time to do the real drive than it did to fly it in the sim. Love it. You're right, this plane is all about the fun of flying. No AP, no navigation system, just a pilot with wings and an engine. I envy that you've gotten to fly it for real.

I was assigned to this Squadron in 1969. I don't remember any specific tail numbers but I do remember the camo scheme. They were new to the Squadron (arrived 2 months prior to my arrival). Despite having T-37's at my base in Texas (PerrinAFB) the AF saw a need to send me to England AFB, La for 2 weeks of schooling, lol. My Instructor for that School turned out to be an Instructor I had at Chanute after leaving Basic, lol. He gave me the test on the second day of school, I passed the test and spent the remainder of my time lounging around the pool at the Motel I was staying at in Alexandria until it was time to head back to my home base.

That's a great choice of paint scheme, Jan Kees! I've noticed though, that the insignias on the wings are on the opposite/wrong sides. Also, I don't know if you would be interested in adding it, but during the final few months it was in service there was a red-swimsuited Varga pinup girl painted on the starboard cowling, next to the name Reckless Prostitute. The "victory marking scoreboard" below the cockpit (at least on the starboard-side) had also been greatly extended by that stage, growing to 14 flags.

The aircraft's serial number was 41-19830. When it was finally retired from combat-use in November 1943, it had flown more than 150 combat missions, shot down at least 14 Japanese aircraft (confirmed), and was flown by 4 aces. After it was retired from combat-use in November 1943, it was shipped back to the United States where it was used for War Bond drives. After the war it was given to a vocational school, Grant Union High School, in Sacramento, California, for use as an instructional airframe. Sadly, it was ultimately scrapped sometime in the 1960s.

Landing the Starship at St. Barts. I was a bit high on final approach but managed a soft touchdown on the centerline. Nice, white-knuckle fun.
