There were still unpainted ones during the Vietnam war, I know that much.It's odd though - I never once saw a bare metal tanker in the time I was in the service. Most were painted the same light gray you see now, but a few ended up being tested with the same low-viz green camo that the Bones use. The gray ones were hot enough in the summer. The green ones were absolutely horrible because the flat dark paint absorbed even more heat.
