Short Sunderland - Payware ?

I was looking forward to this one, what a downer. From the ass shot she looks like a concertina, man those ripples are fierce. The textures look like polystyrene ceiling tiles and both this and the modelling look similar in style to the Hawker Heroes Typhoon (the less said about that one the better, at least that pack had 3 pretty decent kites to make up for the ugly sister)

I had this one on my wish list @ Amazon for ages, but after seeing the pictures in the previous thread, it was swiftly removed. If a payware company wants to survive, they surely must do better than this?

The fact that they do not display pictures that show anything of any size should tell the potential customer something. They show you just enough to get you real curious. Next thing you know, a post of this nature arises somewhere with an unhappy customer that got suckered into buying a shotty product. Unfortunately, there were many before you bought yours.
I mailed FCS last week ,be interesting if i get a reply , the original screen i thought were WIP , have a look at the CD cover it has been doctor to hide the hidieious bumps .

.....and the white bit under the engine might be the "missing" float. ...

That's the inboard spinner, you can see the prop disc. You are right though, it should be more visible. From the top down shot, the inner engine is further forward than the pilot, something is wrong somewhere, without looking it up not sure if external or VC is wrong.

Just slightly off topic......................

For what its worth, I have the FCS Wellington - pics below. It came free a week ago with a set of CH pedals.

It's not really a 'keeper' for me, but it does look better than the Sunderland?

The Wellington is a different designer, the same one who did the nice planes in the Hawker Heroes pack, the FCS Hurricanes, the early years pack, WWI fighters, and a nice Tripacer in the Discover Europe pack. Think he did the Lancaster to. I have them bar the Lanc and am pretty happy with them all.

He has been seen round these parts I think. But not his issue, this isn't his model (I think he may have done work for other companies too.)

I remember the early days of getting myself familiar with all this flight simulator hoopla. I didn't know a thing. To add to it, I had no idea where to go, what to read, what was good or bad. I still remember my first purchases that were marketed through the infamous Abacus reseller. I remember buying three models from there, and it was a big let down in my expectations of what I was trying to get interested in. Can't recall the planes they were but, I flew them all for about 5 minutes each and then closed the simulator with a real 'let down' feeling. I took them off my hard drive and, believe it or not I wasted a cd to burn them too. Then I thought to myself, why am I doing this? Saving these when I am unhappy with them makes no sense. Well, I was hoping ..for something. What, I had no clue. About a year ago I tossed the disc in the fire. What I should have done was contacted Abacus and told them I wanted a refund. Live and learn.

Two years later; I don't buy anything unless it comes from a reputable developer who stands behind the products they sell.

I think that this is the dilemma nowadays. You can't really see and touch the product before you buy it. With most things you can visit a shop and see or touch the product. Even music CD's usually give you a free 30 second listen before you buy them online. Ideally, software with a trial period would solve that problem.

I came back into FS last Sept after a longish break. With a few upgrades on my pc, I found that I could run FSX OK (if not really great) and starting buying quite a lot of software for it. My aircraft purchases have been mixed. Generally they are quite expensive - especially if you don't use them much after the first hour or so exploring them! To be fair, I have been very happy with some purchases - eg Aerosoft Beaver, Iris Diamonds (in their sale), Real Air Spitfire 2008, Carenado Seneca, Flight 1 Me109s - to name just a few. But too many others, which shall remain nameless, were a total waste of money. It's not that they were all bad, it's just that they were not 'keepers' for me. Spend £25/$40 dollars, fly around for an hour and know that you will never use that plane again...........Not great :frown:.

As you say, you get a real 'let down' feeling.

Paul , 99 per cent are great , some expensive some not , but you can see the effort put into the model and also research required .. I was just hoping , closed my eyes and fingers crossed

Albeit taken from the retractable nose turret anchor position

I have send a mail to good friend who was in the RNZAF . he took a selection of color photo while serving on the Sunderland ,
very sure he will give permission , the reason i wanted a good model is the many photos i have and its NZ history . maybe i
should look at making one .

Hi Ian

I agree that there is little doubt that a lot of effort goes into every release - whether it be freeware or payware. I have done both.

Perhaps, the best chance of a decent Sunderland might be from Jens C, given his recent flying boats? Time will tell.

The Lanc is the only one I do have and I actually quite like it with the exception of the poor pop-up panels. Other then that it looks great, flies great..

That in itself is a problem though. Even in a company that employs several different developers, there should be a uniform quality control. OrbX is a good example. Load up any of their airfields and it looks like an OrbX field, no matter who made it. When I pay for two items from the same company, I expect to find the same level of quality in both.

Are you going to ask for a refund, Ian?
I'm more than happy for a good fix and replacement CD , if not a refund , no point sending it back, its bloody horrible , and if they do want it back they will be required to pay the return post .
