SOH Upgrades

We are getting the server there is no doubt about it, next month I believe I can get us a better deal.

thank you for the hard work and good deicsions re hosting, my contrib will be coming in soon, and with many thanks. just have to finsih one more project and will be set for the next months.

Thanks Ickie for your dedication to this site. I was so upset when our friends at Microsoft turned off thier servers and then lied to us about them coming back. I searched for a solution for CFS3 flying for quite a while until I came across SOH.

You saved me and many other who fly with us from an addiction breakdown. I would like to thank you so much from my CFS3 brothers RanMan, 2Gun, Boomerang, Iceman, Dos Maximus, Aric737, Tailwind, Mustang, Ruffus, Deer Hunter, Lightman, Zaraspook, Ganesh, Willy Spaten, DC, The Blacksheep and thier vulchin sheeps, Starcrow, First Run, Air Power, Gustoo etc. etc. etc. and all the other fellas who I have missed out (forgive me old brain power) which we fly with on a regular basis from all over the world because of your efforts.

I personally have had one of the worst years of my life financially but I can assure you when things pick up I will contribute generously as you have provided us with the ability to fly and build our friendships and enjoy the thrill of combat.

I cannot count the hours of enjoyment you fellas have provided us by connecting us all togther. You are a fine group of fellas and I'm sure our group who flys CFS3 will step up to assist you in keeping SOH up and running. Its greatly greatly appreciated.

All the best,

I don't think we have to worry about having banners on the site....before that happens, Ickie would begin selling copies of the video tape he has of Henry dancing on a table top dressed in drag. I, for one, am more than willing to pay to prevent the public release of that video.

That was funny ! :icon_lol::icon_lol:

And made my eyes bleed somewhat too...

I saw the free version of that..

AWSOME HENRY !

While the second server will add greatly to the reliability and speed of the SOH/Combatfs family of forums, preserve the current level of the download library and bring us a dedicated SOH FS'host for on line flying....it will not be free...we have to pay for it...meaning...we the members will have to open our wallets and send money to Ickie to pay for it all. I will gladly chip in what I can when I can through out the year to help pay to keep my addiction, I mean...favorite sim site up and running. Now the site needs its members generosity more than ever....we are now looking at about $10 thousand dollars a year to keep this site up and running...and that is just paying for the servers and band width...not counting any needed upgrades or repairs that may be needed down the road.

So, SOH/Combatfs members, it is time that more of us open our wallets and make small personal sacrifices to fund this site. Simply sitting in your chair while downloading free files while letting a few hundred members foot the bill will no longer work. We are calling on those members who have enjoyed the benefit of the forums, of the download library but who have not made donations to join those of us who have supported this site year after year with our contributions. I have never been able to give much, but I have been able to give something these last few years...and I know that my something added with all the other somethings have gotten the job done.

We have close to 17 THOUSAND members on the SOH/Combatfs family of sites. 17 THOUSAND! If each one of you, each one of us, donated a single US Dollar...we would have all the money we need to fund this site and to have a nice reserve for future expansion and repairs. If half of the total membership donated 2 US Dollars, we would still be in the shade.

But having 300 members trying to fund a $10 thousand dollar a year site is simply not feasible or realistic.

I know everyone will be excited about this site now having two servers, more bandwidth, a dedicated online flying site...now how many of you will show that excitement by hitting the Make a Donation button and helping to pay the bills?

OBIO

A very good point.
One that deserves some careful thought.

The only site I frequent on a regular basis, anymore. Gotta help keep this one as one of the best, if not The Best, FS site on the web. :ernae::medals::medals:

Thank You Ickie.

I am a newcomer to this site but am very pleased I have found it. I have some questions and comments which I hope will be useful.

Questions. Assuming I pay $5 to the site does the author of the download receive any of it? i.e what exactly am I paying for? I quite agree that it is right that users of the site should pay for its upkeep, this site gives enjoyment so paying for its use is fair.

But equally if Javier Fernandez had not spent many hours crafting the USS Nimitz I would not have used the site so does he receive anything from my $5?

Comments. The USS Nimitz site now extends to 619 posts on 31 pages. Many of them say how wonderful Javier's work is and I agree, it must be the Jewel in the Sim Out House Crown. The trouble is many of them dupicate images already posted which must clug up the storage on the server and cost money.

Also, they conceal some real nuggets of information e.g. Post #96.

Would it be possible to put the "Wow, its great!" posts into one folder, put the "Help with installation" issues into a separate folder and "Suggestions for improvements" (e.g. the carrier does not show in FSX's GPS) in another. Then at some point someone could go through the posts and delete the duplicates (mainly pictures) to save space and money.

I hope these points help you,

Thank you for a really useful site which is professionally run,

Best regards,

Tregarth

This must take up a lot of storage and cost money. But buried amongst all of this are some real nuggets of valuable information (i.e. Post # 96) for those who are struggling to install it (i.e. Me).

I think this add-on must be the real Jewel in SimOut House's crown and Javier has earned al the praise he is shown, but would it not be possible to have one folder for praise, another for “How to install it painlessly” (You seem to need a full version of Java) and another for “Areas for improvement” - the Nimitz does not show in FSX's GPS.

Then perhaps once a week a “Sweeper” could look through the folders and delete the duplicates and reclaim some expensive storage space.

I hope these points are helpful, you run a very useful site very professionally,

Thank you,

The donated money we recieve here all goes to bandwidth to run the site. That is a hugh amount, and we pay it yearly in one sum as we get a better rate. This year we are striving to get more, as our server has been attacked to many times and needs an upgrade. So we are installing a new server, and keeping the old also so we may have a dedicated server to use for multi-player flying right here amoung friends. So...No..No portion of any funds recieved *PAY* anyone..All staff work for free, and the owner pays all the bills out of pocket if fund drives fall short

But equally if Javier Fernandez had not spent many hours crafting the USS Nimitz I would not have used the site so does he receive anything from my $5?
No..This site just so happens to be the favorite site of many Sim Developers, they hang out here often, but their sites or e mails should be used for tech help, but also if you post in the FSX forum any problems you may have you will get the help you need.

Not sure about the Jewell, we have many GREAT Developers here and think highly and respect them all...

Tregarth

Hi Tregarth! Welcome to SOH. We are most happy to have you. We hope you stick around and contribute to the threads. SOH is all of us.

In regards to your questions, the $5 donation, you mention, will go to the pay the server fees and upgrade costs of the site. No one makes money from SOH. The freeware developers such as Javier, Piglet, Put Put and others and, repainters and scenery makers all donate their work. Most upload not just here at SOH but at other sites, AVSIM, Flightsim, etc.

Staff members are all volunteers. We give a little of our day to try and make SOH a better home for all of us. Most of us have full time jobs and are only here for a few hours a day at most.

That was an entire paragraph to say, I am not aware of anyone ever doing what you proposed, in separating the WOW posts from the factual posts in a thread. I don't think we have the time to go through posts to do what you suggest.

While I agree with your suggestion and think it would be nice. We try and leave threads alone as much as possible. A Staff member will step in only if a thread takes too much of a political or personal turn.

I hope this helps and answers your questions.
