Sometimes FS makes you go wow....

While my WOW moments don't have the same amount of WOW as seen in the screen shots of payware enriched sims, I think my freeware based FS9 installs are solid enough....and they give me plenty of WOW moments. Freeware mesh, freeware clouds, freeware scenery, freeware textures, freeware planes.

Spring Colours Again

This sky is Flight Environment, talk about supersaturated!
Taken over southeast England, not even sure it's a likely sight.
I promised myself a long time ago I would not take kitsch sunset screenshots again, but this was just so gaudy...wow.

To me, good scenery is as important as a well-sim'd aircraft and having added Christian Stock's freebie 75m Red Baron New Zealand mesh (sadly no longer available) and NZ Landclass changed the character of the sim for me. I own a payware mesh/landclass/scenery package for Canada (my homeland), but Christian's NZ mesh quickly made flying around New Zealand a real treat, especially the way he handles the lighting of distant hills in a way that creates some very nice depth and tonality. But most recently I found a photoreal scenery by Robin Corn for the Tongariro-Ngauruhoe Volcanic Complex on the North Island that turned out to be one of the nicest rendered volcanoes I've seen in FS9. While it doesn't erupt like Kilauea does in the sim, the volcanic landforms are very well depicted, including summit pit craters, old lava flows with lobate scarps, and crater lakes. Well worth the add if you're a volcanophile like me:

I look forward to purchasing Christian's 20m mesh and other New Zealand scenery sometime in the future. If this is 75m, the 20 must be terrific.

PS. The aircraft is J. E. Narcizo's nicely done Piper PA-18 Super Cub, with an NZ repaint by me

Some more views from the cheap seats. Keep in mind that everything you see in the following screen shots is freeware. Mesh, clouds, ground texture, plane. FREE FREE FREE!

The plane is the freeware Alphasim EF2000 Typhoon from 2003, updated with better effects, working on an updated panel set (thanks to Astoroth for sending me a copy of the original panel bmp, panel config and gauges). Mesh is by Rhumbaflappy as is LOD 7 but rivals some LOD9 that I have seen screen shots of! Clouds by Pablo Diaz, HDEv2. Effects on the Typhoon are from other freeware Alphasim jets. Ground textures...can't rightly recall who did them at the moment...a photo real ground vegetation package I found on Simviation.com...still testing it out...but so far I really like it.

Some aircraft look just as good parked and shut down as they do airborne, I like the Bucker Jungmann and P-51 Mustang in this sense ....

Cheers! Mike :wiggle:
