Strange Things at Airports

Anyone know what this is at KDFW?

As I was driving (racing) around KDFW, just south of runways 36L and 36R, I came upon this monstrosity.

You can see the runways top of picture.

Any ideas?

It's an antenna array of some sort Milton, I pass it from time to time going in the south entrance. Of course the circular top is not solid that I remember and looks much more like the antenna it is when you're close to it.

I stand corrected, after looking it up, the top is solid and it's actually the Doppler Radar for DFW Airport.

Ok, I can't see it in FS9. Is it an addon scenery, or FSX??
Or just old age...
Yea, I don't remember it being in FS9 either, but it does show up in FSX, but they also did a much better rendition of DFW for FSX too so that's probably why.:salute:

At the bottom of the center support, there's also a regular VOR that's been partially crushed! :isadizzy:

Found it!!! Thanks for the pictorial guidance; I don't think I would have found it otherwise, except by accident.

Wierd looking thing, ain't it?

I'm guessing that since the DFW VOR is raised (above the ground), the mesh is simply the VOR antenna's Ground Plane.

Falcon mentioned that it also serves as part of the DFW weather radar installations. In which case the mesh would make sense as it increases the surface area of the antenna some.
I always thought it to be only a platform to raise the VOR for reception purposes....after all the Maverick VOR is used on many IFR approaches to the airport....so it is important to have clear line of sight all the way around the 360 degree arc.

Cheers
Stefan
