Subs.... The Smoking Lamp is out.

We knew (sort of) this was coming. Those bubble-heads are going to be miserable. Hat's off to those sub sailors. They put up with more than most of us!

I guess one cannot argue with the logic behind it. However, I thought that an advantage of the nuclear powered submarines was the excellent supply of fresh air. But, I suppose people vastly more knowledgable than I am on the subject determined the smoke wasn't scrubbed out.

I'm thinking there will be a vastly larger use of smokeless tobacco products.

Buy stocks in chewing tobacco and snuff -- especially around sub bases! :icon_lol:

My experience on surface ships was that when they put the smoking lamp out, the guys that chewed had to spit it out to be fair to the smokers.

Wow!

I think even as a lifetime non-smoker, I'd rather the chewers keep their sanity than be fair! :icon_lol:

Well seems like they will have even a harder time getting people to go into the sub fleet. Makes me glad I am in naval aviation so I don't have to deal with the people being crabby from nicotine withdrawal. My experience on cruises is that when the smoking lamp is out people can still dip/chew. You just cannot spit over the side, and have to keep a sealed container with you at all times to spit in. The actually secured dipping altogether on one of my cruises cause they kept finding spit bottles in the angle irons. Stuff is sick, but to me if they want to do it they should be able to. I don't agree with making them suffer.

Going to take away smokes.... and then introduce women on a submarine... yeah those poor sailors will be going nuts.
No you can't smoke.... and don't look interested in them women.

Errr maybe they may make an exception for ballistic boats... for the welfare of the general public.

It's the modern military!!

There are unrealistic expectations enforced and decided by those that never had to live up to them.

Here's an example:

At the old West Point, there were no women. The classes were a bit easier and the military side of things was a thousand times easier. They had more time off. In addition, there was a woman called the cadet hostess who would set cadets up with dates from nearby colleges. It may sound cheap, but these were nice young women and nice young menwho wanted to meet each other to get away from school. Many happy and lifelong marriages resulted.

At the new West Point, there are women. The women run amock, and many drop out their second year so that they can openly date and be engaged to cadets, losing taxpayer dollars and sacrificing discipline. Some of the men fight over the women. They have no free time at all, and life is horrible. There is no more cadet hostess, as they don't have time and it's too "old-fashioned". STDs run rampant at many modern military institutions where women and men mix, but men don't have time to meet non-military women. Our nation's future command officers are supposed to live like monks and follow rules noone ever had to. Now, there are TONS of sexual assault cases everywhere you look. Most exist only in the minds of confused young women who got themselves into a heap of trouble and wish to utilize the 'sexual assault grants amnesty from any crimes committed' rule.

That's just one example. Legal pressures have lead to the command staff of our armed forces no less than selling their fighting men and women down the river for personal gain. I've met maybe two commanders in my whole life that would have wanted the best for their troops for reasons other than appearances. Noone wants to be a leader anymore, everyone just wants wholesale achievement at any cost. That's true everywhere.

Smoking in and around tanks has been forbidden ever since in the german army. Do you really think someone cared about that on exercise?

Anyways, I'm sure the sub crews will find a solution. Even if it's just a seperate small smoker's chamber.
